I also like the ability to "like" posts. It is an easy way IMHO to give certain posts more weight, helpful in a debate

Welcome to the new website format for this forum. Operation should be substantially the same, with minor changes (like more formatting options.) Please let me or Meso know if there's anything that looks like it's not working, or that you are having trouble with, and we will take a look. Also please bear with us over the next few weeks as all the bugs in the new system (and there are always bugs) get ironed out. Thanks for your patience.

You guys are doing fine! It takes time to do things like this.

Utter Rubbish. I guess its a good excuse to abandon DZ.com for good. If it ain't broke...….. I'm sure quite a few regular posters will disappear from here.

Ouch, so much white space. Did they buy shares in scroll wheel manufacturers? The old school site was good because it was information dense and one could see a lot of topics and posts at once. At least it is better on a phone -- lines wrap instead of being very wide and requiring the smallest possible type to avoid scrolling left and right. Making the site phone-friendly would have been one of their goals. But on a desktop with a decent sized screen, it really wastes space. (Setting text size to 70 or 80% helps a little in getting text back to original size, but doesn't do much for the white space.) This kind of crappy design is unfortunately more and more common these days, I guess for fat fingers on small tablets. Have we lost all records of what threads and posts we've seen? One can't start where one left off; one is dumped back to post #1 on page #1 even if it is a thread one has been following while logged in. The addition of drag and drop files is a big plus of course. A couple Facebook rigging forums must have been benefiting from having easy uploads from phones. Other opinions and discoveries about the site are welcome...

"Dear Sir: My standard fee is $600/hour for time spent in court or depositions, regardless of whether I am actively involved. Other time is billed at $300/hour, exclusive of additional expenses including but not limited to travel and lodging. In all cases, the minimum billable time is 1 hour, which resets daily. Please let me know where I should send the invoice for the time you have required so far. Best regards, ..."

The site is basically unnavigateable (Is that a word?) on a mobile browser. The forum is clunky as fuck now. Speaking as a guy who has run several websites like this with forums, I get "user resistance to change." This isn't that.

I’m not feeling the love. I think he had to do something to cater to the audience with small screens. But this is looking like it could be the end for me. I’ll wait and see for a while. I haven’t found a search function yet. Without that a ton of rigging knowledge will be inaccessible. There is too much content here for this format to be effective.

Breeding age? What century are you from? Yes, they are out of your league; no woman who is considerate, positive, self aware and authentic is going to want to hang out with someone who uses terms like "women of breeding age." Possessing those traits do not make a male a better MAN, nor does not possessing these traits make a male LESS of a man. Pretty sure most women are not looking for someone who thinks the way you seem to. Also pretty sure that most evolved males would love to have a partner who can take care of herself and others in her life. Yes... you walked right into the women's forum and started insulting women. Probably not one of your better ideas. Indeed. But hey, thanks anyway, I did need a good belly laugh this morning.

I have had a SLAP tear and chose to have it repaired. Cortisone shots helped some but the PT just hurt. The Doc who did mine did it via arthroscopy. Only had three very small incisions. The healing process was painful, but they did basically explode my entire shoulder to get to the glenoid labrum and fix the tear. If I needed it, I definitely would do it again.

Kind of jumping the gun. there. The approved progression is: 1) There's no election fraud! Fake news! 2) OK maybe there's election fraud but it's not a big deal. Only then can you jump to 3) Clinton did it first.

I’ve directly witnessed two AAD fires on student jumps, know of a half dozen more on student jumps, and have seen or heard of about a dozen on fun jumps at local drop zones.
  23. 2 points
In the last 10 years I’ve seen or been on the jump at big way events where at least 6 AAD activations have occurred because of low openings. In that time I know of at least 2 AFF students losing height awareness resulting in AAD activation whilst I was on the DZ. it does happen more often than reported.

I don't know why this is still a debate. The manufacturers are nearly in universal agreement--double stow. Virtually every manufacturer out there says this. By contrast, I don't know of even one major manufacturer who currently recommends against double stowing rubber bands. Bag strip is a very serious malfunction and if it happens to you there is a legitimate chance you could die from the resulting hard opening. Double stowing is explicitly intended to prevent a bag strip malfunction and it is more effective at doing it than other forms of stowing. At the bare minimum, if you dont double stow you should be able to easily lift your bag off the ground by the lines without them falling off. If you cannot do that, you need to use a different stow method that provides greater stow tension. One of the problems that makes single stowing seem attractive is that the problem that is created with single stowing does not immediately manifest itself. You could go thousands of jumps without ever having a problem. But one day out of nowhere the physics align and you get slammed like you just got into a car accident at 120 MPH. That would be the bag stripping off the parachute causing premature inflation because your locking stows were too lose.

It's not exactly the same situation, but here in the flight test department at Textron Aviation (aka Cessna and Beechcraft) we created and implemented an in-house process to self-report a number of aviation incidents that aren't required to be reported to the FAA. Although it does include those as well (turbine engine failures, altitude deviations, etc.). The intent of the process is to figure out areas we as a flight test department could improve. The reports are anonymous, and we actually have an understanding with the FAA to help protect our pilots legally in return to passing on the data to them. Several hundred reports have been filed over the last few years, everything ranging from system failures to TA/RA to dialing the wrong frequency. The result has been pretty eye opening for the organization, and in turn has helped shape our monthly safety meetings and yearly safety stand-down topics and training. The data has helped our local ATC update their procedures and training as well. Nothing specific made this program become a reality. It didn't take an accident or realization of some new problem. Sometimes it's simply noticing that things can be improved. I have no doubt the USPA wants this info for very similar reasons that we do. Probably no conspiracy or witch hunt involved.

Last year we spent a week on the Silver Bank - a humpback whale breeding area some 70 miles off the coast of the Dominican Republic. Even there we spotted plastic garbage in the ocean.

I agree. Fortunately the sort of alarmism you describe is very rare. (Alarmism is not exemplified by someone who quits smoking because of the health risks; alarmism means that someone can't sleep at night because of the fear that someone else might smoke near them.) Excellent point. And concordantly, we all thought that all those advances came for free; that we wouldn't have to pay for them. Turns out we do. The mines, the oil fields, the atmosphere and the oceans are not infinite, and we are reaching the limits of what they can do for us. The cool thing is that now we know better, and can get that same quality of life without polluting the oceans and skies, and without exceeding the carrying capacity of the planet. If we want to, of course.

As stated before, while we appreciate feedback. We need more specific feedback than "I don't like it". What don't you like about it? Why do you feel that it is so different from the old site? The truth is, as mentioned in another post... We received this same kind of feedback when we launched the old design. Yet it seems most that opposed it on launch grew to like it. So we understand that it takes time for users to become accustomed to changes. And the functionality is by and large the same. There are very few things that are missing on the new format that existed on the old. We realize the "new posts" is a big one and we're going to get that back up. But otherwise, I haven't been made aware of many things that make it less functional than the previous layout. If you can articulate what has changed about your experiences, we can look more into it.

Everything is way too big. Degeneration already mentioned the time it takes to scroll down the list of forums (mobile or desktop). The forum topic list and the topic thread are also too large. I would love to see a more visually condensed version or have the option for such.

George F. Will (impeccable conservative), Jan 19, 2019: It must be misery to awaken to another day of being Donald Trump. He seems to have as many friends as his pluperfect self-centeredness allows, and as he has earned in an entirely transactional life. His historical ignorance deprives him of the satisfaction of working in a house where much magnificent history has been made. His childlike ignorance — preserved by a lifetime of single-minded self-promotion — concerning governance and economics guarantees that whenever he must interact with experienced and accomplished people, he is as bewildered as a kindergartener at a seminar on string theory. Which is why this fountain of self-refuting boasts (“I have a very good brain”) lies so much. He does so less to deceive anyone than to reassure himself. And as balm for his base, which remains oblivious to his likely contempt for them as sheep who can be effortlessly gulled by preposterous fictions. The tungsten strength of his supporters’ loyalty is as impressive as his indifference to expanding their numbers.

Hey guys, I realize that the change may be something one feels uncomfortable with at first, but there was method to the madness for sure. Mobile traffic is now the majority on the site, so to cater to mobile first is catering to the majority of the users. So OP is very much correct in that getting the site to actually be readable for majority of visitors was the number 1 priority. With regards to the white space, it's a change but it's more in line with what modern design standards are these days. It doesn't make sense to move to a new CMS and then to keep the same archaic 90s design that we had. I realize that the old cramped style is what you guys are used to, but at least give the white space a chance, as it's considered to be far better for readability. "If it ain't broke don't fix it", to be honest it was broken. Very broken. There was no way for anyone other than a desktop user to enjoy the site as it was a complete mess. Not only that but our old CMS was very restricted in terms of technology moving forward. We're hoping to develop new tools and functionality that will make the site far more interesting for users, but we needed a change to make that happen. This will also end up decreasing spam and scammers. With regards to ad block, we're definitely going to be looking to enforce turning off ad block. We designed the site in a way that it will look better with ads than without. And the simple fact of the matter is, we run almost primarily on ads and without them dropzone.com would not be able to sustain itself. We're still happy to hear feedback on problematic ads you encounter that may hinder your experience, and to resolve them serving. Messages are in the large envelop icon on the top right. Posts are automatically previewed, the editor shows a real representation of what the post will look like when posted, so it's providing a real time preview. The edit ability is a bug and we will resolve it. The signature line is the same, there should be a visible breaker between the signature and post, which we will fix too. IMPORTANT: We'd appreciate it if you could post any concerns about functionality to the feedback forums, or the bug forum in the announcements. Having numerous threads reporting issues makes it harder to track and resolve. Or to give you answers about getting used to the new layout.

Hi Tim, We lost a very important big-way relative work pioneer on August 23, 2016. Jim Dann was originally from Texas. He joined the Marines at age fifteen and served on a Navy ship. He moved to Burbank, California and worked in an aircraft overhaul facility where he met Bob Buquor. Jim was one of Bob's few skydiving students. I met Jim at Burbank Airport on October 17, 1964. A mutual friend had organized a 10,000 foot Saturday morning one-way adventure headed north in a C172 with the door on. We jumped into a little DZ just past the Grapevine outside a small agricultural town named Arvin. I had twenty-two jumps. Jim and I both lived in Burbank and began sharing expenses driving up to Arvin on the weekends. We'd also attend Brian Williams's Music Appreciation, Wine Sipping and Parachute Packing Society meetings on Tuesday nights. We would wind up moving into the guest house of his mom's new place in Burbank. Listed below are some of Jim's early accomplishments: First seven-man star: Arvin, CA. Early 1965. Bill Newell and I witnessed it from the packing tables. First eight-man star: Arvin, CA. October 17, 1965. First ten-man hook-up: Arvin, CA. February, 1966. First ten-man baton pass: Arvin, CA. May 15, 1966. First nine-man star: Arvin, CA. May 29, 1966. The last weekend of the Arvin DZ. Stunt jumps for, "Don't Make Waves," the Tony Curtis, Sharon Tate movie filmed by Bob Buguor. Bob drowned on one of the camera jumps on July 27, 1966 off Malibu Pier, CA. First ten-man star: Taft, CA. July 2, 1967. Yearly big-way demo jumps into The Stock Plane Air Races at Shafter, CA Original member of The Arvin Good Guys speed ten-way team. Please feel free to make additions and/or corrections as needed.
