  1. thanks for the info. i'm guessing there really isn't a good single source with the history... or is there??
  2. My advertising professor, Basil Valente, always said, "Advertising is what you pay for... PR is what you pray for." Seems like you've got th perfect opportunity to capitalize on a public relations goldmine. Just make sure the right people get to read that article.
  3. good point. the comment just got my brain spinning... lol. scary for a sunday.
  4. nice article, but where did this fact come from?? I didn't think planes have been around that long let alone when DaVinci firsted dreamed of them?? matt i missed the line about the chinese in the 1100s. still want to know more about what they were doing with canopies back then.
  5. the way it looks to me is that it's "tearing" where the light is strong. with the iris opened to expose the inside of the plane properly the light coming in through the windows is overexposed & over loading the sensor. you get the same thing when you happen to get any other strong light source like the sun with consumer grade CCDs. matt
  6. i've got an old nikor 30-80mm f3.5-4, and a 70-300 tamron, but most of the time i borrow my brother's nikor 80-200mm f2.8 or his sigma 15-30mm aspherical f2.8. His keep me happy... mine aggrevate me. they've done well for me in the past. soon it will be time to make paper weights out of my two.
  7. i've noticed that with my D70... the actual picture is a bit wider than what shows up in the viewfinder. I believe the manual says something about it. matt
  8. Some of the slower cards from all sorts of manufacturer's aren't great for getting lots of shots quickly, but Lexar doesn't suck. There are lots of pros using them that i know of, plus i've never had any problems with mine. most recently the 2 gig 40x. matt
  9. the "f2.8" (large opening) or "f1.8" (larger opening) refers to the "f-stop" which tells you how much light the lens can take in. The lower the number the more light & glass there is to let the light into the film or sensor. The higher the number, ie... "f22" the less light let in. more expensive lenses with better glass tend to have a wider range for their iris that allows you to take pictures with a faster shutter speed in lower light situations.
  10. Cat Crap is great stuff!! I got to used some on my ski goggles from time to time. It was an inexpensive fix for fogging. matt
  11. I completely understand the fact that "you have to lay in the bed you made for yourself," cover your own ass & act conservatively for your own well being as well as those around you. Sure some people take to video like a duck to water, but i'd be willing to bet that most people don't. There will be some period (hopefully their whole career) where they need to be willing to seek out advice & take constructive criticism. That takes good intentions. Good intentions can't be acted on without skill... Skill won't exist without experience... Experience doesn't accumulate until you practice... People that do practice are the ones that tend to be conservative, safe & spend the time to prepare before the shit hits the fan. What i'm trying to say is that it's all connected. Saying one part is more valuable is like saying the chain holding my neighbor's vicious dog to the tree will still hold him if it isn't connected to his collar. I don't want to be on the receiving end of that. Personally i've got the gear i need, but I may just sell my video camera so there isn't a temptation or pressure from others to put it on a helmet any time soon. Especially when people have already offered to have me borrow their camera helmet, or camera, or get my own & start jumping it. "Thanks for the offer." "I'll take it as a compliment." "It's too soon for me." That's what i've said and will continue to say. thanks for the good discussion matt
  12. I've got to say there is one major point throughout: "ATTITUDE" I don't mean to yell, but if two people with exactly the same jump #s, gear, training, etc... walk up to you asking to learn camera flying isn't their mental state & maturity one of the most important factors?? Sure i've got all the gear that i could strap on my head... i know that it's not quite time for me to aspire to be an aerial photographer yet. At some point it'd like to. Say after 300 jumps maybe further just for fun. I can't imagine trying to sell myself as a professional in the air before i get enough experience. time to go shoot some scrabble... (on the ground) matt
  13. glass making. as in glass blowing etc... on a small & large scale. I can't think of what the one artist's name is... but i'd even like to learn from all the people down at corning. matt
  14. I know you guys are all fans of canon, but not everyone is... why not ask conceptus to make an adapter or line of switches with your connector availible?? matt
  15. Q - You've got my ears perked up when you said not to use standby mode too long. My experience from cameras (ENG, etc...) "standby" means the camera is powered up, but the heads aren't rolling & tape isn't touching them so what would be the harm in that?? Or is it different on consumer cameras? Matt
  16. I've got to agree with Phree... and don't take this the wrong way. Spending the $ to get one good lens from the canon or sigma will probably eliminate a lot if not all the hastle you are going through now. It may even keep you from replacing the lens with another cheapo, which will add up quickly. check out the used/new sections on: www.bhphotovideo.com or www.keh.com matt
  17. sigma's websitehttp://www.sigmaphoto.com/html/lenschart.htm has some pretty good examples for most of the lenses. (though they won't be as wide as on a 35mm film cam with the 1.5 or 1.6x of the digi) imho wide like the 15 is fun to a certain extent, but all the shots will have the same fisheye look. unless you pick up an aspherical version. a 30-70 or something similar is a great all around on the ground lens that is at times hard to live without. or else you'll have to shove your 15mm or 20mm nearly up people's noses to get a full frame head/shoulders shot. matt
  18. I've got a 2 gig CF card for my D70. As of yet i haven't tested actual numbers, but the camera says I could get 190 RAW, images, 179 RAW with basic JPEG or about 590+ Large-Fine JPEGs. With a smaller resolution it just gets stupid fast... up to 7.5K images. I'd want to back up images from time to time, but i envision that happening at home after a day of jumping or on a laptop after something important. matt
  19. maybe you missed the, "Ok, for all of you who have to have the latest and greatest toys to drool over I thought I'd share this with you from CES." after all he did attribute it. I think he was just trying to be helpful.
  20. i can't agree with you more. that's how they make their money... trying to awe the viewer with "amazing" footage. mostly crap that won't make it onto the air of a selfrespecting news organization, most days that is. matt
  21. even if you do have someone voice it over chances are they will drop yours or re-record their own voice over. if you sell it to them they have the rights so just be careful with the fine print. matt
  22. what shooting mode are you in? with my D70 i don't have much of a problem just clicking as much as i want to, unless i've got AF on then it slows down. The more you go into manual the more it frees up the camera to shoot faster. from my experience matt
  23. From what I've seen @$320 before shipping for the "Free Fly Imagem" or double "Imagem" and the still mounts as well as some of the other parts come with it. Matt
