  1. Flyontheground, this is not speakers corner. I would keep your opinions to yourself. There are alot of great aid agencies around the world doing great things. If the money does not go direct to the relief of these victims I am sure it will go to another great place. Yes there are scam artists taking advantage of this event, but I would leave this to police. If you do not wish to give, that is fine but please do not give a black name to this fund unless you have proof. At least not in this thread. Moderators could you delete this post? http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=23062005
  2. We try to keep a few back issues of skydiving mags at the DZ for weather days. For a newbie like myself it is definately good to see how the sport has evolved and what sorts of things drove the sport.
  3. I do not know exactly how this would work. But I was thinking it would be nice to see statistics on number of jumps, wing loading, canopy size or canopy type. Probably be easiest to just have a chart for each category, but it would be nice to see the percentage of (say) non jumpers in the forum. A forum I frequent has something similar in terms of what motor bikes people are riding. I can understand that perhaps this might also be only available to premier members, just a suggestion. http://www.overclockers.com.au/mc/forums/
  4. Hi, Every day I try to check the forums and the fatality report to see if there is anything new I can learn. I have recently noticed that it reports "63 Fatalities Reported". However if you look at the "2004" numbers its states 57. I believe it is because a mismatch with numbers. As "malfunctions" states 16 on the front page and 14 if you click on the link. Perhaps this occurs when an incident is moved from one category to another? Sorry for being so petty. I just see a big difference between 63 and 57. Mind you I see a big difference between 57 and 58. I also would like to inquire about when incidents are placed on this list. As I have seen reports (in the forum) about an incident occuring in December. http://www.dropzone.com/fatalities/index.shtml
  5. I second this. I like going to the same places (cafes etc..) because I like the service and hence tip often, but everyone looks at me strange. Mind you I do get better service, because its uncommon to get tipped here. In the case of Tipping at the dropzone. I would not even think about tipping a TM or JM, as its not the sort of profession I see myself tipping. Most do it for the love of the sport and its not like you are giving loose change from the final bill. Since my dropzone is so small, I show my appriciation by staying back and helping pack away the equipment or put my hand up to be ground crew on a demo. I have made a website for my DZ (not up yet) and regularly do odd jobs where possible. I also regularly offer to pay for peoples (who help, train, talk to me) slots or offer beer at the pub, or not accept their money when buying lunch. Ekkk reading this I realise I am a sucker ;) But with small DZs it is your place too and you are giving something that gives to everyone. I also try to give by being a model student and not think I know it all, be as safe as I can, help out other students etc.. Of course I make mistakes all the time, I still suck at canopy and free fall but I am getting there, and I definately do not try to train the students (since I am still one), but help them walk in the canopy from the LZ, show how to flake it, talk to tandems if they are just hanging around by themselves etc.. Also I bring in a few people to do AFF or Tandems which also helps the JM/TM and DZ. Also when you are trained up, you are another person in the sky. Which is in my books would be a very rewarding thing to a JM, or I could be wrong. So if you think about it, if you hang out at the one DZ for long enough you do give alot back. And definately it might not be appropriate for all DZs, but there are always ways that will show you appriciated their help.
  6. To jump from 4000 feet its $19aus from my DZ.
  7. I would have thought this is more drawing attention than being low key. By the sounds of your area it is more an urban jump, guessing at night. You would draw more strange looks having camo than it would help. IMHO.
  8. It wasnt even originally about price of a tandem it was about tandems and their impact on his fun jumping. Can we not feed the troll.
  9. Welcome to the forum, have fun jumping.
  10. I think we have another troll on our hands. Please read the other posts by learndontdie before replying to this thread.
  11. I think there are two things here. First people doing webpages for fun and the other someone doing webpages for profit. If you do it for fun, use whatever floats your boat. Yes you might be able to get away with PaintshopPro (PSP) but there are some things that you will save a hell of alot of time with when using Photoshop (if you are good at it). Especially now that they have intergrated image ready and god knows what else since I left the multimedia department 3 years ago. We had art students doing very complex designs with little to no knowledge (even though they tried to teach them) of HTML, javascript, css and so forth. To answer you question, I have no idea about templates available. If you want to just make it look better I would think about approaching an art student or someone who likes designing things. I find creating the graphics as being the hard part, or even just getting a nice good look and feel. I see there being two distinct groups those that can design and those that can code (I definately can't design). Photoshop files would be included because if you want to make a small change (color, add graphics, movie items) it is alot easier when they are in their full resolution and in layers. And even if you do not use this now, you might find it handy down the track. If you have any troubles please feel free to give me a yell.
  12. Unfortunately Australia does not have a tunnel (that I know of), so I can not turn into a tunnel rat just yet. Am considering travelling to get some tunnel hours (malaysia and NZ have tunnels) but that will be about a year away. Either way no risk of me picking a tunnel over a real skydive anytime soon.
  13. Congrats, and cudos on the dedication. Bet it has been the best 3 years of your life though
  14. Would someone be able to get this onto skydivingmovies perhaps? I would love to see it.
  15. In australia you have to "have approval of a CI to pack a main parachute for his or her own use or a licensed parachutist" in order to get your A license. If you do not have your A license you need to have a Packer B or above check your pack jobs. Do you not need this in America for your A license? Or is it an issue of the CI not being strict enough?
  16. Friend was hunting for someone else to fill a spot on an AFF course. I raided my piggy bank (had 400$ in coins thank god) and put it in the bank and then jumped that weekend. Best decision I have ever made.

    Camera Helmets

A friend of mine has been doing her own camera mount for a warlock or similar. Cameras are expensive and if not treated right can be broken easy. I would suggest to make a plaster cast of the camera and give that with your helmet. My friend placed the camera in a plastic bag, then dunked it in playdough. After this she filled the hole in the playdough with plaster of paris and then waited for it to set. Worked out suprisingly well as something to work with and work around. And her camera is safe from the evil clutches of fibreglass, paint and the like.
  18. Googlesnteeth, thanks for the video.
  19. I read the article too and missed the video. Great video, must have been emotional for you when you hit the ground. Hope you have a nice dinner.
  20. When I was little and my family went on holidays in Germany I got to sit in a porche police car. Mind you it wasnt going anywhere.
  21. I do not know if this will help. But when riding a motorbike I normally spray the seams with silicon spray. This normally stops the wind from getting through. Depending on the type of gloves you might also want to try this.
  22. All I can say is I love skydivingmovies and anywhere else I can download clips. I have learnt so much and it definately is helping me out since I cant jump for 3 months. Keep up the good work dave, hope the links dont cause too much problems.
