    Computer Help!!

Are they both windows or mac. Is the connection to the internet plugged into the back one of the computers and then that computer has a second cable to the switch? or is it plugged into a device (cable modem/adsl router) and then this is plugged directly into the switch. If I had it plugged into the back of a computer (with two network cards, or modem) and it was windows. I would go to control panel, then network. You should see the modem/network card with the ineternet, and then the second network card. On the second network card I would right click and go properties then in tcp/ip set an ip address like 192.168.2.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, then the gateway/dns etc.. same as above. Then click on the "sharing" tab and "enable sharing". Then go to the computer that does not have the net yet and set the IP address settings use 192.168.2.2 for the ip and 192.168.2.1 for the gateway/dns etc.. You may need to reboot. Hopefully this should work. If it is going through a cablemodem/adsl router directly plugged into the switch then you either have to find out its IP address settings or log into this device and turn DHCP on (if available). If you have any doubt go to a computer savy friend because you can stuff your internet connection if you do not know what you are doing. Also I know the above is not the optimum way of doing things and there is alot more that goes with it but its intended as a quick answer and not a perfect one. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions, or if you want to do it step by step (which is safer). Alternatively you could post more information about your setup in this thread and probably get the same answers.

    161 MPH...

I thought they could get height via GPS. Garmins advertising only some GPS units containing a "Barometric altimeter features", then put doubt in this. Thanks for giving a clear answer, I have learnt alot from this thread. Keep it coming ;)
  3. Big congrats! It is the best feeling knowing it is all signed off. Actually the falling from the sky is the best, that would have to be second or third WD.

    161 MPH...

Are you sure about that because I could not find anywhere that it mentions altitude on the foretrex. So if this is the case the only way I could see them getting speed is GPS. Asuming GPS is the only way they get the speed, it is still a good indicator of how fast you went, but yes there may be some variables (ie if you zigzag, 15m accuracy). Anywhere near 161 is fast, wd tonto.

    161 MPH...

I looked at the website (I do not own one) but i would think that it could download to a computer. Only thing I could see different is the size and battery. The 201 also looks different by saying it is like the 101 ... "yet is chocked full of GPS navigation features like the geko 201". http://www.garmin.com/products/foretrex101/ Again I do not own one so do not quote me but thought the stuff on the website was interesting. Also this looks like a fun device so I am interested to hear what it can and can not do.
  6. First I would like to thank everyone who has replied so far. I have recieved alot of good ideas and definately appriciate taking your time to respond. I think I should mention I am in Australia and the TSA "carry on" rule may not apply here. Also I have a bad habbit of getting picked by the speed cameras, overweight luggage etc.. So I try to follow the rules where possible. As bob.dino mentioned there is a 7kg limit on carryon and I fear my rig will be over this. Also since I am in Canberra the normal plane is a "dash-8" which has a 4kg (9lbs) limit. I have spoken to QANTAS over the phone and they said that they believe their policy does NOT allow parachutes to be on taken as carry on. The phone line was poor but I believe it was in the Operating instructions, about sporting goods. However I have not found similar on their site so I have requested the document. I have sent QANTAS and Virginblue an email requesting information on this topic and I will post here when I get a firm answer. QANTAS states you can insure your luggage in cargo, it is done via QBE which costs ~$55au for a 5 day trip (full travel insurance). However this only covers luggage up to $3000au. http://www.qantas.com.au/info/bookings/travelInsurance/index In regards to a hard case by the sounds of it the pelican 1610 might suit my needs. I will have to borrow one when I get my rig and have a play. I will let everyone know what I find.
  7. I found the thread phreezone mentioned just for the sake of being complete. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1416461
  8. I know you asked about a mac, but some other people may be in the same boat with a PC. DVDshrink is a free program on the PC that rips, cracks, shrinks, burns DVDs. Of course if you are only doing a sports dvd it hopefully will fit on a single sided DVD-r no problem. Sometimes they just do not fit, in these cases the 'extras' and 'other languages audio' are the first thing I turf. It is annoying how somethings only come out on certain regions. I might have to buy a multi region player like bob.dino suggested.
  9. Is there any way of getting a copy? There were a few things on in Sydney that I wish I could have attended. Congrats on winning!
  10. A summary of my experience buying my first rig. Take everything below with a grain of salt because I don’t know anything and I wouldn’t trust what I say. Ask your instructor. I would suggest you read the article about buying your first rig before you read mine as I have written this more as a FAQ (or more showing my ignorance when I was buying) than a guide as such. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/safety/detail_page.cgi?ID=46 Buying your first rig is like buying your first motorbikes the learner rigs go quickly and the good deals are harder to find because more people looking for similar things. Depending on the market in your area there may not be a great selection, in this case be patient, drop your standards or get new gear. Container. When looking for a container you need to find one that fits your current body shape and the canopy you want. Ask to try on your friends rigs, and go to a shop and try on their rigs to see which is the most comfortable. Ask the seller what size the person jumping the rig is and see if this matches your dimensions. Of course Aggiedave’s suggestion of having the manufacturer to resize is a great one, could anyone tell me what extremes they can work with. Some people will fall in love with a specific brand but as long as it suits your needs and is safe its all good. If you think you will be doing freefly soon you should find a rig that is freefly friendly. Size of canopy the container can hold. The manufactures website is a fantastic resource and make sure you go there often to answer any questions you have. Like in the above add, I would go to the Mirage website (press gear – container – mirage) and read up about the features of a Mirage G3. The M6 is the container size so you can find out what canopies it can fit by looking at their website. In the above example I would guess the main would be nice to pack but the reserve says it is a snug fit (I would have been thinking if they were both snug). Some container sizing also can be used to work out if the rig will fit someone of your size/build. http://www.miragesys.com/DesignOrder/SizingGuideByContainer.aspx?Prod=2 Buying new or buying used. I personally bought second hand because I do not care what my container looks like (even though it is great). And I expect that as a student I will give it a few knocks anyways. Also I knew that after I get about 200+ jumps I might then consider buying new gear and may have to buy a new container to fit the canopy. Only thing about buying second hand reserves, I normally checked the repack dates to see if it was repacked regularly. If it was not safe the rigger would not pass it, so new or used I do not see safety as being a reason. Some people find the perfect rig but it is pink but hey its your first rig, and it beat a rental. Canopy. Ask your instructor what canopy you need. Basically you want to find a canopy that is the correct performance for your skill and the correct size. Read manufacturers websites and reviews of canopies and make sure you ask your instructor what they recommend for your skill set. Only other thing is to buy a complete rig or the parts. Depends if you can get everything that suits you. No use getting a container and main that is perfect but the reserve is not right. Talk with the sellers and think of the options you have (resell main etc..). I am a lazy sod so I was patient and waited till I found a complete rig that suited my criteria. Things I looked for in an advert. Container brand, model, dom, jump#, size, jumpers size that jumped it (if container size doesnt answer this). Main canopy brand, model, size, dom, jump#. Reserve brand, model, size, repack consistency, jump#. Cypres and its service dates etc.. If the advert does not answer any of these questions I would ask the seller, but also do some research yourself and see if the answers can be found on the manufacturers page. So am I smoking too much? Please correct any mistakes anyone.

    Lord of the flies

There way a book? The book was required reading in Senior english, man I read slow, so I took the easy (sic) way out. Definately an interesting story.
  12. Well my bone didn't heal properly. Last thursday I got a plate put in my leg and pretty much the counter has started again. It has been 2 months of no skydiving and I expect no skydiving for about 3 and a half or 4 months from now. Think I might buy my skiis and stuff because they might be more useful by then.
  13. Welcome to the sport. I think you will find reading your post again in 6mths time amusing. It is definately a good feeling not being "judged" on every jump. Blue skies.
  14. I plan on travelling to a dropzone later in the year and wish to do it right. I know there are a number of different "travel with your rig" posts. However I have not really had my questions answered. I will contact the APF tomorrow to find out what the current stance on taking rigs as carry on is. But lets assume I want to check in the rig. Will post here my findings. I would like to ask: *What size pelican case do people use? *What gear do that put in it? (one rig or two, helmets, how many suits) *Is camera gear seperate to rig gear? *What type of case do you use (manf/size)? *If you had to buy a case all over again would you have got the same one? *Do you use pick and pluck foam or do you use foam in a can? *If you just fun jump how much stuff do you take with you to boogies? *Do you place any documents on the top informing your contact details and proper handling procedures? *Do you pay extra to insure it when check in? Pretty much I know pelican cases last and would rather pay the extra money, unless someone has better alternatives. I was looking at either the pelican 1610 or 1620 would these suit my needs of a mirage G3 [size m4/m5] (do not have it yet to measure). Will also have an oxygen helmet, alti, jumpsuit etc.. Should I make room for one more helmet (ff or camera). I know I am a while off but these cases can be expensive. 1620 Pelican - 56 cm x 43.2 cm x 32 cm http://www.pelican.com/cases/3bo_1620.html 1610 Pelican - 56.3 cm x 43.5 cm x 26.9 cm http://www.pelican.com/cases/3bo_1610.html Samsonite hard cases http://www.samsonite.com/au/en/local_product_selector_display.jsp;jsessionid=GBNRMV2PFM5ZJHQKY3ME24I Qantas carry on limitations: Length Height Depth Total 48cm (19in) X 34cm (13in) X 23cm (9in) = 105cm (41in) 56cm (22in) X 36cm (14in) X 23cm (9in) = 115cm (45in) 60cm (24in) X 114cm (45in) X 11cm (4in) = 185cm (73in) http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/beforeYouTravel/baggageCarryOn
  15. The one I was refering to has not been setup yet. Sorry for the confusion.
  16. FYI I was looking at the cypres site and they have the card online. http://www.cypres.cc/Sites/englisch/My_Cypres_airtravel.htm
  17. I understand your dream, but I have always thought of people like yourself as being low life drop kicks that really need to get laid instead of watching tight tops. No females were in the room when I wrote my previous response. I am just really sick of any group that has females as a minority always seem to have some people who do dumb shit that makes you understand why that is the case. I for one would like more females (and guys for that matter) in the sport and think comments like yours do not help the fact. More females in the sport would mean more likelyhood of you getting more interesting footage and it would mean more people in the sky so I get more loads on the weekend.
  18. Squeak for some reason always beats everyone to the weekend posts :0:1 1st time I have had surgery, I know beer owed when I start jumping again. (had plate put in my leg)
  19. It is great to see you are having fun on a weather day. I am just starting to learn how to turn points, so you have one (well alot more than one) up from me. Glad to hear someone is having fun with wind between the knees. Also i would be interested in knowing how the scoring works. Is it just based on points or style as well ;) What happens if you head down on the matts do you get bonus points hehe.
  20. /start of hijack/ It is my understanding that there is someone who wishes to setup a wind tunnel in australia. Due to the housing market boom investers are hard to come by, but when that gets resolved they will build it and we will come. I do not see it will be something that will happen in the near future but crossing fingers it will happen. I am more than certain they did not go bankrupt. /end of hijack/
  21. I had door fear up till I started doing dive exits and finished my instructor lessons. Mind you after 27 jumps I would still argue its there just not as strong. Minimising the things that I was worried about meant I could just enjoy the dive and I wanted to get on and do it. I think I will get door fear again when I jump after 5 months off, but if I was not scared I think I would quit. There are heaps of threads on door fear like the one below. As mentioned about think of what you are scared about then talk to someone about it. If it is gear, try to understand it more etc.. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1338164
  22. Congrats! I bet you are glad you kept with it. It always puts a smile on my face seeing someone else getting their license.
  23. Does anyone know any camera's that would be perfect for camera but does not have a remote option. Ie great price, great res, small/compact but does not have remote option. I would like to experiment to see how hard it would be to add this option on these cameras, but if the need is not there then I will go back in my box.
