  1. From someone who has way too little jumps to have sense and is not involved in the politics mentioned in this thread (thank god). I just have to say as I followed this thread from its creation, from the sideline. I see mikieb stuffed up by the way he asked his question (ie not getting someone else to ask from a different region). He also stuffed up by taking the bait when people badgered him. However if that is really how he feels he has every right to express his greviences regardless how sound you believe these are. More than likely a body like USPA would have a structure in place to take greviences. Unsound greviences would be filtered out early and hence would not be any sweat the the people involved. Yes raising greviences can adversely affect innocent people who are hard working. However if the director is doing a great job as you guys suggest, then it will blow over relatively quickly. I do think just as we have processes in place to complain about jumpers doing things wrong, there should be places we can go to complain about the officials (which there are). Mikeb was simply asking for the appropriate way to have his greviences heard. Yes the rules say that they can be thrown out, but sometimes you may wish to enquire about your options that are not the exremes. I do think that this thread was de-railed early not by mikieb and his friends but others trying to defend this RD. It is my interpretation of the thread that mikieb tried his hardest not to bring up the greviences in public but was backed into a corner by people attacking him, and who brought up the events. To make this conversion short can we just answer the question in the thread and then delete all others. Or wouldnt the most appropriate response be to delete the thread all togeather. This would save the RD a bit of grief and probably for a few others involved. Sometimes an unbias view can help a situation. But most time it does not, so I will put my flak jacket on. Let the flames begin.
  2. If what I have read about skyride is correct it is alot different from a travel agent. For one the travel agent works with the hotels, resorts, airlines and takes a commision agreed with these companies. Where skyride does not contact the DZ and charges more to the consumer and hopes the DZ will take a pay cut. Then a travel agent normally will look for the best package for what the client wants. As from what I have read skyride sometimes misdirects consumers to DZs very far away. Also I think DZs work on boarder line margins to start with so to start to eat into these is ruining people who do it for the love of the sport. And then there are the misleading practices that they participate in. I can say I have alot of faith in my travel agent and the service they provide they definately deserve my money. Skyride does nothing for their money except mislead the public.
  3. How do you get around the weight/size limitations of carry on baggage in Australia? Have you ever tried to seek written approval to do so on Qantas or Virginblue? Thank you for the CASA letter, I will include that in my arsonal when travelling. I do see the letter as a response to having a cypres onboard the aircraft (carry on or cargo) in response to CASA legislation section 23. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1363497 Again if I get a written response either way from the airlines I will let you know. I am sorry to all if it appears I am being pedantic. However I have learnt alot from this thread (APF insurance etc..) and just like to know how others handle this situation. Like has anyone placed "parachute" on the outside of the container when checking it in. I feel this will make my luggage more a target by screeners and theifs. However this is the recommendations by the FTA.
  4. Btw there was another thread about this a few months back if you are really interested in this topic. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1363497 Btw if I read all the answers in more detail I would have picked pitching a tent. Because I live 2.5 hours drive from the closest DZ (well 3 the same distance) and it is normally better to just stay at the club house than to only go for one day.

    in memory of Josh

Thanks for sharing. Even though I have never jumped BASE (yet) and never met Josh, I hope to take on some of the character traits that people have mentioned about him. I especially like the outlook he had when it was a bad day for jumping, but a good day to try something new (winery).
  6. I might phone up Dr Carl he will know the answer
  7. I would suggest talking to your instructor about what size/type canopy they would recommend for your skill level and the type of jumps you wish to make. I would suggest reading the "gear" section about and look at the articles which are aimed at "first time" rig purchases. I learn alot from these. Also if you look a few posts down someone has asked a similar question about buying a new rig. In terms of if an Atom is any good. I have no idea so I will not comment.
  8. I do not know if it would be air pressure or just nerves?
  9. Yeh, I definately know it wasnt drugs. It was just an example. Depending on what it is. Some items that I know get sent around that are prohibited are sent via fedex or airexpress. Because alot of the laws are based around being "sent via UPS". Also ensure the sender places things such as gift or uses generic labels which are close to the truth. Also ensuring all the correct labels and tick in the boxes so that there is less chance that they will have to investigate further. But like going through the airport. Sometimes people get pirated videos. Unless they have 20 copies of the same damn video they are not going to get picked. Well depending on the country or the boarder you are crossing but as a general rule.
  10. Depending on what is being sent, and what the laws are in your state. I mean take the extreme example of drugs, they will definately follow up on that one. But then lower things it just depends on the laws, quantity etc.. but yes the possibility is there that you could get visits.
  11. Awww! that rocks. On Thursday I had surgery on my leg. On Saturday my friends phoned me up and said they were going to make me dinner. It was very unexpected.
  12. Part the way down the link below you will see a golf cart fatality. Damn that is why you should only ride with pro cart drivers like sunshine. http://www.saskgolfer.com/newsletters/augustindex02.php I do like the way the brit handled his fairway encounter though. I should try it at the golf course my house backs onto, just don't know how to fake the jump (no jumping in canberra other than tandem).
  13. I would first like to say I know I have low jump numbers, but I figured since it has only been a few months since I was in the same boat I would post. You may be scared by the event, but I believe that is the reason the H&P was placed in the AFF. If you were that scared by the H&P and add smoke coming from the engine, how much worst do you think it would be. My DZ was really picky about being stable counting to 3 and pulling (rightly so). I knew there was 10sec and pretty much back flipped (accidently) took my sweet time to be stable and pitched. I did a few fun jumps from 10000 feet, focusing on my exit position (man I hate poised exits) and did dummy pulls after count to 3. Then when I was ready, I did the H&P again. Did it at a different airfield (on the coast) and it was a great feeling, mind you I wish I looked at the camera in the plane all the way till pitch. I personally thought the most important thing about H&P was being stable when you pitch. I figured as long as I was not too low I would hard arch then pull. Mind you a few jumps later I did a fun H&P a little lower than 4000 (which was the planned height). As the height was different I was confused and unprepared and I pitched straight away. After a bit of teasing from the other people on the load I realised how bad it could have been if I pitch at the door it then caught the tail. I did not realise I pitched so quickly until people mentioned the look on my face. Stay safe, and you are definately not the only one who was scared by the H&P.
  14. I am trying to you wendy but it just is not working Even after being stuck at home for 2 weeks with my leg up.
  15. I think to get from a whuffo is just a mindset and you do not need to skydive. I believe I am someone who skydives. When I am able to play with others in the sky, then I will call myself a skydiver. I would like to add, people who do it just for the piece of paper or to impress someone are not skydivers. They have to do it because they like the feeling.
  16. The "whitey" bars are quite amusing. To see the price the charge foreigners to get in and also for the drinks is huge. Just remember "clubs" are for "massages" and "bars" are for drinking. I thought the government changing the church into a bar (and a foreigner one at that) just to piss off the religous nuts was a nice touch. If you are only there one day, you really will not have a problem finding something to do. And yes JB is not that great, hence why I mentioned it only as a passport whore effort.
  17. Yeh Simlim square used to be good to get electronics. But I have not been there for a while. (all the software you could need). The spitting lion was ok. If you are up for rock climbing there is a great boldering wall in bukit merah. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1457989;#1457989 I did enjoy the night zoo if you are there over night. Or if you are a passport whore you can always go to JB and go to Malaysia for a few hours. The food is great in Singapore but you have to go to somewhere other than Orchid to see how it is normally bought by the locals in the bizzars. Man I miss the food. If you are really stuck for something to do feel free to PM me if you have questions about some places. But I was only there for 2 months so I don't know how much help I would be. Else you could always just get a train ticket and travel. The train system there is awsome. Just remember they have strict rules on chewing gum, flushing toilets and littering.
  18. Na I like my set of classic starwars figures better
  19. Golf is damn dangerous if you ask me. Think of all them strokes and lightning strikes. It is interesting to think of the two mindsets in the case of boat, planes, golfers. We all think each other is crazy. Why thank you.
  20. Just like to add that a number of people suggest carrying a phone (that is turned off) when jumping, incase you have an off DZ landing.
  21. As mentioned the only thing about buying a player vs cracking is that the DVD will only work at your home. If you go to the DZ and it does not have a region free player the same problem comes up again. That is why I am a big fan of reburning these discs as region free over buying another unit. Mind you I might buy another unit just to have one in my room. I would like to add that there are a number of DVDs that you simply can not get in any other region. "the never ending story" was one DVD that was released in Canada but you could not get one for Australia Region. Only reciently have they released it here, but that is years after it came out in Canada. Alot of Manga and stupid pommie shows are in a similar boat.
  22. It definately looked like a good video to me. I know I have stuffed up a number of jumps and will continue to do so. Thanks for the video it was fun to watch. Just curious is the instructors position the mantis position?
  23. Thanks mate, I saw the travel link and even emailed APF. Damn I think I will read over their site another time. Thanks again, I guess I will have to buy that pelican now.
