  1. I can say that your post regarding cotton definately does make sense and I will keep it in mind when choosing clothes for the winter. It does not get very cold here in Australia but I have started doing hobbies where I am exposed alot to windchill and that advice hopefully will keep me that little bit warmer.
  2. Hate to keep this thread going, but I truly think if you have to register someone the day before to get the numbers (as per the rules) its kinda sad. I know that it wasnt the case this time. If the person doesn't wish to publicly participate in the forum, why should the same person wish to participate in the DZ.com record. Damn I have over 50 posts now (most crap) and still do not consider myself a dz.commer. I just think if you have to get people who are technically a member, but others dont agree then is it worth it. On the other hand if this person hangs out with most dz.com ppl IRL then its kinda blurry. My thought is if most people who jumped thought the person was a dz.commer then more than likely he is part of the community. If you had to think about it for a while, then its probably not the case. Pretty funny all this because of a helmet All I can say congrats, and the picture does look great. Did you get video?
  3. I always had the assumption that instructors would be trained in first aid. I believe my instructors may all have first aid certificates but this might be through their day jobs. What if the instructors land off DZ and the student gets hurt. My DZ also has a full first aid kit at the manifest, which includes splints and other items more likely to occur while skydiving (but I’m guessing this is normal). I plan to get recertified at first aid, because I figure if someone has a off DZ landing and I can make the same spot I would love to know what I could do to assist. Mind you I do so many silly things (snowboarding, skiing, motorbikes, climbing) it is surprising I have not kept my first aid up to date. Perhaps larger DZs could see if enough people are interested in getting certified and then get the ambulance service in to train (or whoever trains First aid near you). This way they can tailer it to emphasise on injuries that occur at a DZ. They do special courses near me for motorbike accidents. I mean even things like how to remove a helmet were not covered in much detail during the first aid course. I am sorry to hear that someone at the DZ pulled your cutaway without supporting you. Hope you are recovering well.
  4. But ain't italians meant to ride ducatis and aprillias? Mind you I saw a video with someone wearing similar attire. The stuff this guy pulled off he can wear whatever bling he likes. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1377528

    Office Sex

    I second this one.
  6. We will believe it when we see it *grin* Congrats again.
  7. I do not have windows at work. And when I get home its normally dark. Mind you I have a reputation for being cranky. So I would say yes, lack of sunshine will make you sad.
  8. If I understand your question this has been discussed a number of times. I would suggest using the search feature. The below thread way suggested by skymama once before in response to winter clothes. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=727744;search_string=winter%20jumping;#727744 I would also suggest making friends with someone from the opposite sex at the DZ, this is a good way to keep warm on the ground
  9. This may be true that some people are becoming complacent due to the introduction of an AAD. But what about mid air collisions, lines around the neck, collision with the plane, hitting head on the way out and other unfortunate accidents that may induce unconsciousness. I think the AAD is a great thing for me as a student, but I recognise that if it fires under normal conditions I should have a long hard look if skydiving is for me as this should be only a very last resort. I think you are making the asumption that all students see the AAD as being only if you forget. I see it as being if you are unable to pull for whatever reason. I would not jump a rig without an AAD for the above reasons, I like the fact that it is compulsary for all to wear one.
  10. A longer version of this video (minus the porn) can be found at the below thread. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1361099

    Oceans 11 question

When you go to a hotel there is normally a small fridge that is refered to as a minibar. Pretty much it has alchol, softdrinks, choklit and so forth and normally for very expensive prices. Of course you pay at the end of your stay.

  14. Always amazes me how FOS alot of slashdotters are.
  15. I personally think that someone is a "skydiver" if they have control of their body in the sky. I normally think of people who have a B license but more towards a C license, are about at the stage where I think of them as a skydiver. I only have 27 jumps and I think I am someone who skydives. I think that tandems and AFF students are people who have skydived until they make it a regular thing. Of course this is only my opinion, and like anything on this forum, everyone has their own opinion on this and I respect others may think one jump wonders are skydivers.
  16. congrats, perhaps someday I will get to play with you guys.
  17. ying, i think it would be polite if you filled in your profile and posted in the introduction forum prior to baiting. I think skydiving is far from suicide. As I jump from the big blue to live not to die. Suicide is the intentional act of killing oneself, and that is more like being grounded and becoming boring rather than flying and living.

    New Pics in Pete.fi

    Nice pics thanks pete. ketos
  20. In short, no we can not teach the students that using reserve is always a safe option. Should students cut away a (kinda deployed) main for an unknown (and possibility of failure) reserve. I think that taking the risk in deploying the reserve for a student is more responsible than trusting the student to work out how to (for example) land with risers. I mean students are people who normally still jump with instructors and most would still not target assist themselves etc.. So to add another factor to landing may be enough to make a casualty. I know my friends 3rd jump he landed down wind, flared high and didn't plf. If there was a managable mal with his main and he was encouraged to stick with it I can asure you he would have had alot more damage than a broken arm. Reliability of an AAD I do not know about other DZs. Students at my DZ jump with an instructor, if they do not pull the instructor does. For a student the AAD only comes into action if a mal or the instructor doesnt hang on (which i have not heard of at my DZ). If a student sets off the AAD alot, they will get the "maybe skydiving is not for you" talk, or they may just not pass the AFF stages. If they are still on AFF they will still have an instructor so they other safety factor is still there. They may have proven to be fairly reliable, but there is still the human eliment that they were set and the odd chance it may not work so again you encourage best practices to the student (or newbie like myself). My thoughts With my limited knowledge, I would say that encouraging students to rely on the reserve is unforunately our only option. Because if we put any doubt in the reserve, people hesistate, and this means eating dirt. Skydiving is not without its risks, however we have to play the best hand we have. And students (including me) landing a perfect main is bad enough let alone adding the slider up, broken toggles, line break and so forth. Yes reserves do not have as good press as an AAD, however an AAD may also have a bad day, skydiving is not without risks and anyone participating should accept this.

    Last name

Mine is a stupid long ass finnish surname which only a few people in OZ share. But I believe it is not uncommon in Finland. Man do i get sick of repeating the spelling over and over because of all the n's in my surname.
  22. I have heard of this thing you guys call snow
  23. :27:2 (people dont stay back at the DZ much) I have just started in this great pasttime, had an accident outside of skydiving and am now grounded for 3 months. Hope to double my numbers in the first week back in the air at the start of march (as I am saving what I would normally spend on skydiving).
  24. RPT thanks for sharing there are some great shots in there.
  25. G'day, welcome to the forum. I guess you did a tandem, how did it go? Was it cold when you jumped? I dont know bore me with details ;)
