  1. Hi Rick, Hope you enjoy the forum as much as I do. I am only very new to the sport also. One tip I have is to budget so that you do not have to repeat stages just because you havent jumped in 3 months. Make it clear to the dropzone you want to get your license and ask what is needed to get there, and what length of time you can take off if bills come up etc.. Having said that pace yourself and dont feel like you need to do it all at once, the sky is always there. Try to do it in such a way that you best can sustain your habbit (addiction?). So I take it your static jumps were roundies? You will get a nice suprise the first time you jump a normal chute. Welcome again and enjoy. -op5e
  2. A friend of mine who I thought had more than 500 jumps was buying his first cypress. He said it was because a new rule that came in making it compulsary to wear a cypress. Mind you he could have been mistaken, or he might have less than 500. If anyone else knows anything, please it would be nice to know.
  3. I have copied and pasted the details for moruya below. Their website is up and working again. Please check their website to get the most up to date info. My understanding is that moruya is a boogie for wingsuit, rw, and freefly. http://www.funnyfarm.com.au/moruya.html
  4. So you have never even heard of the "Scarfo" case? I mean why would you care unless you are into drug dealing, kiddy porn, murder or other major crimes. Do you really think the cops have the resources or care about your dirty emails to your gf?
  5. My mum didn't like me skydiving. So I took up motorbike riding and she stopped bugging me about skydiving. Mind you I am now in a cast and not jumping because the more dangerous of the two (motorbike).
  6. AAD is compulsory in Australia for all jumpers as of January if I am not mistaken. Is it compulsory for A-license holders at least in the US?
  7. hehe kwaka i didnt understand most of your post. I would suggest when talking to the judge, pretend to be very sorry for your actions. Once I was borderline in getting a heavy penalty, but how I reacted meant the cop put the lower penalty for me. A few minutes of pretending (or actually being sorry) could mean alot less heart ache. I do feel for you, but seriously break things down into parts and see if you can slowly get back to where you want to be. Mind you the first step is confidence, it helps with getting jobs, girls, your relationship to parent and so many other things. It might feel shit at the moment but it will be alot worst if you let everything take you even further down. Bleh, I would ignore me if you havent already.
  8. Anyone know the little rule of thumb about how cold it is up at 10000 feet? I do not know if most people jump in winter. I saw a post about some people in norway jumping at -20. What do other people do in winter? The people I jump with just put layers on, but there is not even a chance of getting snow anywhere near the dropzone.
  9. Go for it, else you might regret it later. Does not sound like it will conflict with work too much unless you are a prick to her, considering the parents are all for it.

    Why 7 cell

I do not know the answer. But does the centre cell have any structural properties. As if you had a seem in the middle it would be more likely to fold here if not fully inflated etc.. ? Also if you had two centre cells, what would happen if one was not inflated as quickly as the other. Could this cause one side of the canopy to inflate and cause a turn? Anyone got any good books on fluid dynamics etc.. Btw I will be looking through the forum to see if someone has already discussed books etc.. I am just figuring if someone knows off the top of their head.
  11. If you really want to jump I would not let the cold be the only factor. Of course depending on how cold is cold. But here in Australia it gets down to about -5 up top and I just put extra layers of clothes on. Also its so much easier to pack in the cold than it is when dripping with sweat. Again depending on the dz and where you live but I would not let the cold be the only reason not to go to the dz.
  12. I would not have it any other way. It is just handy to know what you are up for before hand. I found my knowledge in what the costs were and what hoops I needed to jump through to get certain licenses was very limited. So again if I could get any more information about other costs that I may want to budget for and so forth it would be nice. I mean I am planning holidays but now I will only travel where there is a good dropzone.
  13. I only started skydiving in July and just got my License. So I am in a similar position. My dropzone is 3 hours away, I am in Australia so the below amounts are in australian dollars and some fees/requirements may not apply to you. Also I might be buying gear you do not wish to spend as much on etc.. If anyone can think of anything I have left out or can make any suggestions to me please fire away, I recognise this is not complete and also am in the learning phase. AFF - approx $3000 (repeated a few stages) APF Licenses - $160 per year (think its alot more) Club fees - $50 (I cant remember) 12 jumps per year (min. to stay current) - approx $350 If you require gear for the 12 jumps - approx $260 Per jump between - $19 to $35 Gear rental - $17 + $5 packing Jumpsuit - $400 Altimeter - $150 Audible Alti - $420 (when I get my b license) Helmet - $360 Goggles - $50 Logbook - $50 Second hand Complete Rig - >$3000 AAD - $1500 AAD Batteries - ?yearly change? Consumables (rubber bands) - >$20 Reserve repacks (six monthly) - $100 I have started to pay for my B-rel lessons and these cost 85$ per jump. I need to do nine successful jumps so I will assume I have to repeat a few here, mind you depending on height I may be able to do more than one B-rel lesson per jump. B-rels - approx $800 Beers owed - >$100 Transport to DZ - $30 per go. Food consumed etc.. - >$20 per go. Not including boogies during the year, transport to boogies (for me that means flights), coaching, new licenses and the fees that go with it, and my normal jumps throughout the year. I definately do not want to scare you away. Because once you have your license you can then do fun jumps and borrowing gear and it really does not cost that much. Just set a goal for what you can afford and stick to it. If this means you can't do B-rels till next summer then so be it. Ensure you get your A license as soon as possible so time off jumping does not mean you go back a level on the instructed jumps (this can get costly). Btw for me I also needed to buy transport to get to the DZ and a tent and sleeping bag so I had somewhere to stay.
  14. I have only been in skydiving for a very short time but I will post my observations. Sometimes if you bring in business they may have a way of reimbersing. However this is normally when you are a jumper or work there. To get a job or work there. As mentioned above you can learn to be a packer or you can do manifest. In my experience this is sometimes this is a staff member who gets paid and sometimes this is something the jumpers who do not have as much money like to do. I have not been to larger dropzones so I do not know if there is many non-jumpers that do this. I have seen all the people who are eager to learn the jumpers are also as eager to teach, just remember to learn from alot of people but ask an instructor and use your common sense before you actually put what you learn into practice. I am guessing (with no knowledge) the difference between your Hang gliding and skydiving, in getting free jumps is that the lessons still cost the dropzone. If there is more people in the plane it cost more fuel. Chutes have a limited life (and students can be hard on them) and these are expensive. And you need an instructor for 9 successful jumps, which unless you befriend someone it costs for their fuel/gear/time. I am not saying it is not out of the question I am sure there are a few who have done the same, it is definately worth a shot, and even if they do not give you free jumps for working at a dropzone can give you knowledge which can be priceless. Also you may get lucky and the dropzone might support getting you a license. I would also suggest if you can not get a job at a dropzone, ask if they mind you hanging out at the dropzone. Again you can learn alot this way and when you can afford to jump you will be alot more knowledgable. Sorry for the long reply and sorry if i am telling you how to suck eggs. Just slap me in PM.
  15. I do hate having to be the only voice of reason but I just think a skydiver needs to have a close grip on action and reaction. I just dream of a world where every one I jump with are responsible (me wakes up now). Bigway, I agree that people need moral support, I just also think there needs to be a hint of "you goof" thrown in. Sorry again if I went over the top, just cars are so not my favorite thing at the moment. I said more in my post, than I would have if it was a flame. I put myself out there not nearly as much as he did and also did not make it totally negative. Btw kwaka why were you not on a bike, instead of driving an evil cage? Hope all goes well, I truely do. FYI - My housemate is far from responsible hence why he is being thrown out.
  16. Not all companies can afford SCSI and I would not suggest SCSI on something non critical like a skydiving site that does not bring in revenue etc.. I have seen IDE raid fail on systems it should not have run on, but then again I have seen it used well. Possibly he got Raid1 and Raid0 confused, but how cares you look at what hardware you have and what you need to do and then pick the right one for the job. You may have a CPU hit with IDE but damn with the grunt of computers now days and the guess that the bandwidth is the bottle neck does that really matter. Also you have hardware raid cards for ide to get some load off the CPU. http://www.promise.com/product/product_list_eng.asp?familyId=7 Can we keep this on the topic, if we want to debate IDE vs SCSI can we post a new thread please? They both have their time and place. PilotDave, just yell if you need a hand.
  17. Hate to be the spoilsport. But if someone was this careless (tired while skydiving) and caused a collision or worst would we view it the same. Also it is not just one thing that he did wrong, he would have had knowledge he had no license and no insurance and also that he was tired. Also I am very interested why he has no license, did you loose it before. I mean I am not perfect and have done my mistakes in a car, however I have learnt my lesson and know that a car, skydiving, motorbike, snowboarding are not places to take lightly. When you do one of these things while tired, drunk, drugfuked, or peer pressure, you may not just hurt yourself but other people. Would you jump with someone without a skydiving license, if not then why would we not be disappointed to hear when someone drives without a license. KawiZX900, sorry to hear this has occurred to you. And I am also sorry if I sound a bit harsh above, I just hope you use this as a wakeup call like I have. Also cars are so not my favourite thing at the moment. Btw you could also take my one of my house mates approach to handling police and that is hide under the blankets whenever they try to serve something on him.
  18. Hi Pilotdave, Just joined your site due to an email address stuff up "forgot the .au". Have downloaded a number of videos, I have to admit the one I like the best so far is wingnuts xmas eloy as it is just some friends having a great time in the sky. I have learnt alot from the malfunctions etc.. Have you resolved the space issue with the new disc or need more space? Let me know if there is anything I can do. -op5e
  19. :0:2 0 - jumps due to broken leg 2 - first bike accident + just got my A license Me don't think I will post this every week for three months
  20. A sample question for the A license in Australia is "You are in a 4-way formation and you suddenly notice you are at 1,500. What would you do?" Remembering that this is a person who has low jump numbers (like myself) what would you suggest to be the answer. Mine would be to turn, arch and pull reserve. Mind you I am going to reask my dzso when I return to jumping in 3 mths, as I am not 100% sure now I think about it. How would more experienced people answer this question, remembering it is aimed at someone who is only just finishing their A license.
  21. Congrats on the A license and welcome to the forums. I am fortunate in Australia you can Jump all year round. Actually in winter you have better chance to get to height. Just take up snowboarding or skiing the both rock.
  22. I certainly will log on often. I used to fine myself loggin onto other forums and they have all gone by the wayside for dz.com. I spend hours and still dont get through all the new posts. Damn you all stop talking. And a large number of posts make me smile often. Thanks again for your concern. I just phoned my DZSO and he was pretty bummed, lol. I promised I would make it up to him when I return in a few months. In regards to missing the winter weather. I am from Australia and hence I am missing the summer. I have a flight booked for Queensland on the 21st Dec and I will not be able to enjoy Ramblers or the beach.
  23. Thanks for your concern. Yes I have all her details and already have insurance claim etc.. Just have to find another bike. As for hanging out at the DZ after hours, unfortunately my only transport was the bike and the closest DZ is like 2+ hours drive. So I think I will save the money and go hard when my leg is healled. Am however thinking of hanging out at picton for New Years. Anyhow know how picton is for NY eve? I read about your near miss and it does sound very familiar to some of mine. People in cages can suck sometimes. Mind you this carpark accident is something I have nearly had happen to me many times before. Anyways as I have only just taken up motorbikes, skydiving, snowboarding, rollerblading at skate parks. I guess this is only the first of many hospital trips.
