  1. That depends on which side of the Laffer curve you're on (serious answer), or which side of any particular political issue you're on ( equally serious but extremely cynical answer). If I was debating Obama about this, I guess I'd ask if it's a good idea to create "some" jobs even if something else might create more. You don't have to outrun the bear.

    HR 1955

I object to the characterization that this is an Obama idea, but on to the bills: The one introduced in 2007 was defeated in the Senate. Rightly so, I think. The recent addition to the defense authorization bill is even more egregious. For example, it allows detention until cessation of hostilities - since there's no declared war, how do we know when that happens? The fact is, U.S. citizens have certain rights (sixth amendment, habeas corpus, etc.) which most of people in the world envy and most of the dictators in the world fear. Weakening these protections will not weaken an enemy, it will only weaken America. The issues raised here are not just theoretical. Even without passage of either of these two measures, Jose Padilla was detained as an enemy combatant, but eventually tried and sentenced in (civilian) Federal court. HR 1955

Umm, check this out, from the May 31, 2010 edition of the European Union Times http://www.eutimes.net/2010/05/new-obama-law-warned-will-jail-500000-americans/ Now do a little research and see who runs eutimes.net You don't have to outrun the bear.
  4. Don't let Bytch's comments about dacron lines get lost in the shuffle. They will absolutely save your ass. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  5. Enjoy your trip. (by the way, I've heard the turtle soup is excellent there) You don't have to outrun the bear.
  6. If we're just talking about the Supreme Court and it's done the way C-SPAN does the House and Senate, I'm okay with it. If anybody with a camera can broadcast from any courtroom, that's a circus waiting to happen. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  7. And I guess, technically, high-altitude jumps (above 18,000 feet) from larger aircraft would require TAWS. How's that for irony? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  8. This might not be a skydiving incident, but it's as good a topic as anything we talk about on these forums. The ones that scare me are big, high-wing planes (e.g. twin otter) where you can walk under the wing while the prop is spinning. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  9. Here we go to Speaker's Corner. My guess: we need to write our representatives in Congress to oppose user fees. (That's the sticky at the top of this page, so maybe not SC) You don't have to outrun the bear.
  10. When you skydive, your chest won't be on the ground. (OK, that was sarcastic, but..) When you freefall, the air pressure is on your whole body - chest, legs, arms. The floor has to support your whole weight on a small contact patch. Your breathing isn't physically restricted in freefall like it is with your body weight concentrated just below your diaphragm while arching on the floor. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  11. Yes, read something like this (from Globalsecurity.org):Despite its many upgrades over the years, from the F14A, to the F-14B, and finally the F-14D with its powerful F110-GE-400 engines and more sophisticated weaponry and surveillance equipment, it appeared the Tomcat's days were almost over. However, this state of uncertainty wouldn't last for long. Shortly following the Persian Gulf War, Navy leaders decided to devise removable bomb racks for the Tomcat's to allow them to carry MK-80 "dumb" bombs. The Tomcat's were also given the Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) targeting system to allow for delivery of laser-guided bombs. With its new upgrades the Tomcat's were soon dubbed as the "Bombcats." During the proceeding years the F-14s took on a new, more effective role as a fighter-bomber. In Operation Deliberate Force in Bosnia, the Tomcats delivered laser-guided bombs while other aircraft painted the targets with lasers. The Navy was credited with 30 percent of the kills against forces in Kosovo as a result of the bombing performance of the Tomcat. The F-14 also demonstrated its ground attack capabilities in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2002, VF-14 led the first long-range tactical air strike, flying more than 1,700 miles round trip to Mazar-e Sharif, destroying Taliban aircraft on the ground. During Operation Iraqi Freedom the Tomcats are living up to their 'Bombcat' nickname with their air-to-ground missions which continue to save the lives of coalition ground forces each day. or this (from www.iiaf.net): Rumors had been going about that Iranian F-14As had been fitted with the Russian made engine and ejection seat and has the capability to launch air-to-surface anti-ship missiles. 12. I've seen that "tailgate until you speed" trick lots of times. Ironically, in Alabama, exceeding the speed limit by less than 25 mph carries 2 points penalty, following too closely carries 3 points. I guess if you thought it would make a difference, you could write local officials and ask that police not do something more dangerous than the behavior they're trying to prevent. Do you think a letter like that would make a difference? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  13. If I'm not mistaken, the vertical wind tunnel came about during development of parachutes for space capsules. I like space exploration. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  14. Some good ideas here; especially about demonstrating canopy skills. One thing is didn't see was more equipment knowledge. Apologies if I overlooked something, but what about a requirement for packing a reserve (just for practice)? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  15. from Norway Post - Sept. 11, 2010 Norway spends more on education A new report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) shows that Norway is one of the world’s top spenders on education. Placing only second to the United States and Switzerland, the Norwegian state, on average, spends US$12,000 per student. Not only that, but Americans have barbecue; Norwegians have lutefisk. Any more questions? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  16. Could you post a picture of that proposed label? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  17. from Federal Aviation Regulations part 105: § 105.3 Definitions. For the purposes of this part— Approved parachute means a parachute manufactured under a type certificate or a Technical Standard Order (C–23 series), or a personnel-carrying U.S. military parachute (other than a high altitude, high speed, or ejection type) identified by a Navy Air Facility, an Army Air Field, and Air Force-Navy drawing number, an Army Air Field order number, or any other military designation or specification number. Reserve parachutes and pilot emergency rigs are "approved". Main parachutes are not. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  18. This is a good question. Of course, the experimenters might determine that the neutrinos didn't exceed the speed of light, but this is an important consideration for practical and theoretic reasons. For example, current computer chip designs have electronic components working so fast that the time it takes electrons to traverse a couple of inches of wire is important. If that time is not limited by the speed of light, there could be some exciting computer designs in our future. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  19. Don't know how much the Mormon thing is going to hurt Huntsman or Romney - between the two of them, they've had fewer wives than Newt. The other dynamic here is the TV producers' constant quest for new and exciting programming. This certainly works against Ron Paul. You might have noticed that Huntsman's daughters are just about getting more air time than he is. When a candidate does something comical or outrageous, he's guaranteed to be featured on the evening news. Calm and sensible doesn't sell television. You don't have to outrun the bear.

    Vigil 2

The Vigil and the Cypres behave a little differently in this respect, but the simple solution is to power off the AAD when you leave the DZ and power it on when you get to the DZ. The really dangerous scenario is if you jump at one DZ, then go to another at a different altitude without resetting the "ground zero" on the AAD. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  21. You mention bad casings, but what I don't get is that the fluid has to get out into the rock formation. If it remained in the casing, it wouldn't do any good. So what keeps the fracking fluid from seeping into any nearby aquifer? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  22. So what keeps the isopropyl alchohol out of my drinking water? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  23. Two questions: What chemicals are used to fracture a well? Why can't plain water be used? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  24. Exactly. You can eliminate the department, you can't eliminate the expense. That's why it would be nice if "journalists" would fact-check some of these promises and press the candidates on details. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  25. DOE handles development and maintanence of nuclear weapons. DOD handles delivery. More to the point, though, the DOE budget is only about $30 billion in most years. If you don't eliminate the programs, there's not much cost savings. You don't have to outrun the bear.
