Do You Support Assassination or "Targeted Killing?"
Bertt replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm pretty sure Osama and his Al Qaeda buddies declared war on all Americans, military and civilian. I guess I could sum this up by having a bumper sticker printed that says, "My war criminal killed your war criminal". You don't have to outrun the bear. -
This should be the wave of the future. People whose jobs involve sitting in front of a computer screen and talking on a telephone without much face to face customer or co-worker contact could cut down their carbon footprint much more than if they drove an electric car to work. However.....lots of bosses are unable to evaluate employees unless they see them sitting at their desks, so wave bye-bye to the future. You don't have to outrun the bear.

What, you don't think 25,000 Lehman Brothers employees wound up working in small businesses? If you want to see something amusing, look at a website called jobcreatorsalliance.org If you see anything on that site that actually explains how to put America back to work, please post it here. Studying skydiving / Skydiving culture

Maybe you can figure out why people are so keen to study skydivers. You don't have to outrun the bear. -
Can neutrinos convey information? Absolutely. A neutrino burst could be short or long, with spaces in between, like Morse code. And with the Neutrino Signaling Device, you can get information 60 billionths of a second before your friends. You don't have to outrun the bear.

All Perfectly Legal, Ethical, and with the Mayor's Blessings....
Bertt replied to muff528's topic in Speakers Corner
"scumbag Republican" is a quote from the first post of this thread. That's why I put it in quotes. I did watch the interview, and the nice Republican businessman actually said that if he paid more in taxes, he would have less money available to invest in his business and open new locations. This is in contradiction to the fact that business expenses are deducted before taxes. If his accountant has led him to believe otherwise, his accountant is wrong. Hence, my advice that he get a new accountant. You don't have to outrun the bear. -
Only a true hippie would have pulled out that reference. You don't have to outrun the bear.

1) that "scumbag Republican" needs to get an accountant who knows that taxes are paid on profits, not business expenses. 2) Now to the point of the Chicago article. Fighting this sort of thing begins with educating the voters. The "city" didn't hire the labor leader; someone in city government hired him. If the reporter who filed the story follows up and names that person, at least the voters will know who they're dealing with. Unfortunately, reporters too often don't. Since a special waiver was necessary, that might be challenged in court, if there's a lawyer or group with the time and inclination to do it. Too often, this stuff gets politicized to the point that people don't see the wrong, they just see the fight. Once again, this is where the press can help by bringing facts to light without editorialising. All you can do is try. Voters tend to be pretty apathetic until things go too far. If it's just money, they can do what most college students do - tell their parents they've been hit with an unexpected "lab fee". Seriously, all you can do is offer the suggestion. If they do a tandem and like it, they can take the next step, but you can't do it for them. In fact, dropzones really don't need skydivers who are there because someone else wants them to be there. One option to get your buddies to come play with you might be a trip to a wind tunnel. Less expensive, less frightening, very fun. You don't have to outrun the bear.

One thing your post didn't say was why you haven't jumped for a year - finances, work obligations, family, other interests, lack of interest, .... Figure out why you haven't been jumping and how, or whether, that factor has changed. If you resume jumping, go up a couple of canopy sizes for several jumps. You don't have to outrun the bear.

AFF student struggling with stability
Bertt replied to tomahawkpilot's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
According to your post, you thought you were relaxed, but the freefall was a blur. You weren't as relaxed as you thought. Will looking at the horizon help? You should be looking where you're supposed to be looking. If you're supposed to be looking at your heading, look at whatever you're using to hold a heading. If you're supposed to be checking your altitude, look at your altimeter. If you're supposed to be looking at an instructor, look at him. Take your time. Unless you fly jets, you probably do most of your flying below the AFF pull altitude. You've got plenty of altitude, so you've got plenty of time. No need to get in a hurry. A trip to a wind tunnel would probably be time well spent, but if that's not a good option, you can still progress just fine. The real key is to slow down and keep your brain ahead of your body. There's a guy in New York who has a part in a play. He stands in the same spot on the same stage and says the same lines every night. It's a long running play, so he's done this hundreds of times. Before every performance, he goes into the bathroom and throws up because he is so scared He's not scared that he will fall off the stage and get hurt. He's scared he will forget his lines, or stand in the wrong spot. He's scared he will embarrass himself, or that the audience won't like him. That's called "performance anxiety". So how does he get on stage and perform every night? He rehearses. He practices everything he is going to say and everything he is going to do in detail, over and over, so that when the curtain goes up, his body does the right thing, even if his mind is almost completely overwhelmed with fear. He has rehearsed everything in such detail that, when he gets his cue, he really doesn't know what else to do except perform the way he is supposed to. That doesn't take away the fear, but it keeps him going. And learn to do a good parachute landing fall. You don't have to outrun the bear.

A videographer with over a thousand jumps just told you not to get ahead of yourself on this. That's some pretty good advice for a number of reasons. Here's a plan: Keep working on your license, one jump at a time. Don't buy any camera equipment yet, but talk to the videographers at your dz. See what they use; ask them about things. Maybe you can learn to dub video and pick up some spare change. If not, packing is also a good way for a poor college student to help pay for skydiving. When you've got at least a C license, revisit this whole topic. Good luck. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Cop threatens to execute driver over concealed weapon permit
