  1. and if you want more separation, wait for an angle of 50 degrees You don't have to outrun the bear.
  2. Would treating interest income, dividend income, and capital gains the same as income from wages and salaries impact you positively, negatively, or not at all ? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  3. A little off the subject, but the Democrats are not doing themselves any favors by continuing to worry about Romney's taxes. This line of attack just makes white people in Kansas think Obama doesn't like rich people. Democrats should praise Romney for the good work he did as governor of Massachusetts and the courageous positions he took as a moderate Republican when he opposed Ted Kennedy for the Senate - signed an assault weapons ban; instituted universal health care for the state; said that he believes all people should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of sexual orientation... Well, I don't know the pundit's name, but one of the talking heads on MSNBC (or maybe it was CNN) actually pointed out that some Republicans have blamed weather phenomena on God's wrath and this might just be his answer. Gotta love those hard-hitting, investigative journalists. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  5. You mean like writing to my congressmen to tell them how I feel about the issue? Did that. Pointing out in a public forum that some influential politicians don't have an interest in changing the tax code because they personally benefit from it the way it is. Did that. Or asking questions like "If corporations are people, why don't they pay the individual tax rate?". Did that. (I was going to bring about social change by occupying Wall Street and sitting in the rain banging on a drum, but some Canadians beat me to that one. Darned Canadians; they walk among us...) Anyway, if you have any other good ideas that will help get the tax law changed, please let me know. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  6. The issue is not becoming successful. The issue is that if you invest your time in making a company successful and receive a wage, a salary, or a commission, your tax rate is higher than someone who invests his money in the same company, but pays a lower tax rate on his dividends or capital gains ( which actually means you took some money out of the company instead of leaving it on the company's books for additional investment, but that's another story). I'm kinda critical of the idea that job creators should be taxed at a different rate than job doers. How 'bout you? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  7. Good for you. I watched a guy half your age do half that many jumps on his birthday. He was worn out. I was impressed. Now I'm doubly impressed. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  8. The difference between the theory of evolution and the theory of gravity is that you can see gravity work right before your eyes. It takes longer for evolution to work, so it's easier not to see it. Just a thought. Ya'll have fun. I'm going to go eat some hybrid corn. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  11. You'll have plenty of adventures in the future. Best of luck to you and yours. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  12. Now that makes sense. So much that it might have happened if not for this:http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2008/05/foreclosure-phil In an article in the Wall Street Journal on Feb. 20, 2009, Phil Gramm wrote this: "Yet it is amazing how well the market for credit default swaps has functioned during the financial crisis. That market has never lost liquidity and the default rate has been low, given the general state of the underlying assets. In any case, the CFMA did not deregulate credit default swaps. All swaps were given legal certainty by clarifying that swaps were not futures, but remained subject to regulation just as before based on who issued the swap and the nature of the underlying contracts." This was after AIG Financial Products brought AIG to the brink of bankruptcy through the mismanagement of AIGFP's credit derivatives market, and AIG was saved by a large government bail-out. 13. Good enough. So, back to the figures I posted above: That explains 29% of BoA's losses. What about the other 71%? Why did the bank make those loans? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  14. Can you elaborate on that last sentence? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  15. Guys, poor people don't cause housing bubbles, or internet stock bubbles, or any other price bubbles. They don't have enough money. And I'm pretty sure the CRA didn't require Washington Mutual to get involved in the Atlanta real estate market. Even if the CRA is the only cause of the financial crisis, that would still lie at the Republicans feet. The big run-up in CRA loans occurred during the early 2000's simultaneously with mortgage lenders' production of huge numbers of sub-prime loans which they sold. Characterizing these as CRA loans was more a way to justify the loans than any need or requirement to make the loans. Here's a quote from an article in Forbes on the subject. Note the dates: You don't have to outrun the bear.
  16. I like the slogan above the headline: "holding the powerful accountable" Now that crime and deficit problems in California have been solved, those powerful skydivers will have to answer to the hard-hitting investigative reporters who look out for the welfare of those threatened by skydiving. ( well, really, Lindsey Lohan wasn't in court this week, and nobody got bitten by a shark, so what are they going to do a story about?} You don't have to outrun the bear.
  17. You're on to something - you can't violate a regulation that doesn't exist. How's this for starters ?? 1) regulate Credit Default Swaps as insurance products. 2) let a mortgage originator sell all the mortgages he wants, but they have to be sold individually, not bundled into securities. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  18. This is the part that confuses me. If LJC prevents ruffians from pulling a weapon, why would you need a gun? Please excuse the interruption. Carry on. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  19. Expect to spend a couple of hours going over emergency procedures, area familiarization, standard procedures, etc. Expect to pay for rental gear unless you bring something appropriate. Expect to make one or more AFF type jumps. Fill in your profile so we can tell you how friendly the local dropzone is. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  20. "skirt around". You're just too nice, Billy. I was being ironic. Cary treats courts, judges, and AG's like they don't exist, and so far he's been right. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  21. Does Georgia have an attorney general ?? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  22. Don't blame the politicians for this; blame the journalists, who are always ready to stand behind the first amendment's rights but do not live up to it's responsibilities. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  23. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perl http://www.perl.org/ It's a programming language much favored by Unix types who like to write scripts for all sorts of things. If you're interested, the two links above should get you started. If not, have a nice day. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  25. This quote from Chicago first ward alderman Joe Moreno was more what I had in mind when I mentioned the intolerance of those who hate intolerance: On Wednesday, Moreno did not dispute that Cathy had the right to say what he said. But, Moreno said, “There are consequences for freedom of speech (and) in this case the consequences are... you’re not going to have your first free-standing restaurant in Chicago.” Unless he was seriously misquoted, he didn't say there were consequences for discrimination, he said there are consequences for freedom of speech. Now that's the way to stand up for people's rights. You don't have to outrun the bear.
