  1. The arguments for and against gun control are well known. The question is whether Congress will take up the issue. This would be a good opportunity for everyone to write his/her congressperson and state simply, "I hope you (will or will not) renew the assault weapons ban. Thanks for listening; keep up the good work." On this issue at least, Congress does seem to pay some attention to the public mood. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  2. I don't care how big the 1780 hurricane was, it can't rival SuperStorm Sandy for news coverage. You don't have to outrun the bear.

But when they have their own country, they can make their own laws. They just can't put a Leupold scope on their rifles unless Oregon secedes, because of export restrictions. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  4. You want denial? You should read Karl Rove's latest. He's still massaging the numbers to show that changes in demographics, liberal media smear campaigns, the entitlement mentality, and anything else he can think of that's not the Republicans fault caused so much of his superpac money to fall on deaf ears. I have yet to see a good explanation why Alaska and Wyoming, which get more federal aid per capita than any other states, went for Romney, while Virginia and Nevada, which get the least, went for Obama? Why did Maine and Vermont, which have virtually no black and latino voters, go for Obama while Alabama and Mississippi went for Romney? Why did more people believe the lies and smears of the mainstream, liberal media, when Fox News Channel consistently comes out on top of the ratings for viewership? I guess the simple answer would be that a large part of the Republican demographic quit believing the Republican bulllshit, but I'm not sure how Karl is going to attract more money to his superpac with that explanation. 5. Noooo. Now ask me if I'l like to go. I hope the event does well and encourages more American participation. Have fun. You don't have to outrun the bear.

http://www.policymic.com/articles/18906/obamas-reelection-layoffs-papa-johns-applebees-and-the-companies-where-obama-reelection-will-get-you-fired Apparently there are a lot of people who were forced to do unpleasant things because Obama got re-elected. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  7. There was a cartoon in a comic strip a while back that showed 2 guys having a conversation in a bar: First Guy - I would skydive, but I have a wife and six kids. Second Guy - So do I. That's why I skydive. You'll get different answers from different people on this. Here's my answer. If you're going to skydive, you need to be focused on skydiving. If your doubts about whether you should be there are a distraction, don't skydive. Note that you can always skydive later in life, but raising a family can't be put off 'til later. 8. But I included a link to a source with mine .... Anyway, I think we're all agreed that the process is in motion. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  9. This is what Diane Feinstein said about it: "She also said Petraeus will not need to testify at hearings she is chairing next week into the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack." You don't have to outrun the bear.
  10. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/iran-fires-us-predator-drone/story?id=17674916 This report makes me think of the Gulf of Tonkin. Is anybody else here that cynical? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  11. So far, this is a more sensible thread than most of what goes on in Speaker's Corner or in Washington. I'd just like to add a wish for tort reform, specifically going to a "loser pays" system like this: LOSER PAYS By Walter Olson, 05-21-2004 Adapted from a fuller treatment originally written for overlawyered.com America differs from all other Western democracies (indeed, from virtually all nations of any sort) in its refusal to recognize the principle that the losing side in litigation should contribute toward "making whole" its prevailing opponent. It's long past time this country joined the world in adopting that principle; unfortunately, any steps toward doing so must contend with deeply entrenched resistance from the organized bar, which likes the system the way it is. Our editor wrote an account in Reason, June 1995, aimed at explaining how loser-pays works in practice and dispelling some of the more common misconceptions about the device. He also testified before Congress when the issue came up that year as part of the "Contract with America". For a more extensive look at an argument for the loser-pays system, see chapter 15 of The Litigation Explosion, "Strict Liability for Lawyering". As other countries recognize, the arguments in support of the indemnity principle are overwhelming. They include basic fairness, compensation of the victimized opponent, deterrence of tactical or poorly founded claims and legal maneuvers, and the provision of incentives for accepting reasonable settlements. Sad to say, the American bar, though loud in proclaiming that every other industry and profession should be made to pay for its mistakes, changes its mind in this one area, demanding an across-the-board charitable immunity for its own lucrative industry of suing people. 12. Ok, I admit I didn't read this whole thread, but is the gist of it that the president who took too much credit for the killing of Bin Laden now wholly and completely responsible for the debacle in Libya? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  13. Well if you're going to take that kind of attitude, you might as well just bring a couple of cases of beer to the dropzone and hang out. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  14. There are a lot of Republicans who feel that way. Let's face it, Obama's record is lackluster at best, but the Republicans lost. Instead of congratulating themselves on retaining some gerrymandered House seats, the Republican party and the whole nation would benefit from a moment of reflection where Republicans ask themselves, "How bad do you have to be to lose to a loser?". You don't have to outrun the bear.
  15. He's one of the biggest land owners in the western United States. Oh, and he founded CNN and pretty much started the whole 24 hour cable news network thing. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  16. One thing Boehner, Paul Ryan, Karl Rove, et. al. need to realize is that they put Obama in the White House. What I mean by that is that white, conservative voters all over America didn't wake up one morning and say, "I think I'll vote for a black guy with left-leaning ideas." What happened is that a lot of white people woke up one morning and said, "Damn I'm sick of these Republicans." You don't have to outrun the bear.
  17. Congratulations on getting him off to a good start. You think you've got mixed feelings now; you've got about two years to prepare for the day when he really does know more than you do. Get ready. It'll be here before you know it. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  18. When I took DeWolf's rigging course, I tried to count the sewing machines in his house. I gave up somewhere in the high twenties. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  19. The defense against all this stuff is supposed to be an informed electorate bolstered by a free and diligent press. The press of late has been free, but not very diligent. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  20. There are two parts to landing a parachute. 1) Flare at the right height. 2) Do a PLF (parachute landing fall). Have an instructor explain and demonstrate those things for you and the process will be clearer. Parachutes don't stall the way airplanes do. An AFF instructor can explain this in more detail, so I'll leave it at that. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  21. It is a significant storm, but part of the coverage is a matter of location. The media outlets have camera crews in Manhattan all the time. They don't keep crews in Point a La Hache, Louisiana. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  22. Don't buy a harness that "almost fits" just because the price is good. You must have a harness/container that fits you and will accept the size canopies you need. Beyond that, you have a lot of flexibility. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  23. That business of not sending additional support when things go wrong is not exclusive to Obama. In Mogadishu, the Delta snipers who requested to be put on the ground near the downed helicopter were denied permission. If you listen to Dakota Meyer talk about the incident where his patrol was ambushed, he was denied permission to go down to the scene and requests for air support were denied. It seems to be more of a cultural thing among commanders. This would have been a good time to change that culture. You don't have to outrun the bear.

Category 1 - meh Down here on the Gulf Coast we have to walk ten miles thru a cat 1 just to buy beer. One little tip. If you see water running over a road, don't drive thru it. Playing that game just makes life hard for rescue workers. Good luck and y'all stay safe. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  25. All of the above, and also (since it's only one side), is the leg strap dirty or stained? e.g. Did you spill a cup of coffee on that strap and not the other? You don't have to outrun the bear.
