  1. here's how they'll really do it: 1) A bag of Osama paraphernalia will be taken to the NSA. 2) A process more mysterious than underpants gnomes will take place. 3) A report will be written. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  2. Good article. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  3. Does your idea take longer to describe than the amount of writing you've done in this thread? I'm calling troll. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  4. /serious comment/ Other than the muzzle velocity, how much difference is there between a sniper at 800 meters and a sniper at 8 feet?/end serious comment/ /now for the good stuff/ I can't believe you people are so missing the obvious. Donald Trump asks for Obama's college records, then suddenly bin Laden gets whacked. We all owe Donald Trump a big "thank you" for playing such a big role in getting rid of this issue. 5. Some of those have a limited lifetime, specified by the manufacturer, so the Date Of Manufacture is very important here. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  6. My neighborhood, south of Birmingham, no damage. Five miles up the road there are trees down everywhere and they just got power back today. My son moved over to this side of town a couple of years ago. He used to live in Pleasant Grove. The area where he used to live is gone - the whole neighborhood. We're feeling pretty lucky right now. 7. Cable news is best at telling us what color panties Lindsey Lohan is not wearing this week. Just a quick sample, BBC news and Pakistan Times both have articles on Japan today. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  8. I like the black stuff. Seriously, Cowboy charcoal (maybe find it at Lowes). And did you know that Kingsford brand was started by Henry Ford as a way to use wood waste from the Ford car factory. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  9. Just to throw my 2 cents worth in: At least in the case of tandems, I would disagree with some of the conclusions in this email. The IRM, under Tandem Instructor Rating Course, part A.4.f, says that a tandem instructor must have an FAA class 3 medical or equivalent, so that's probably why some DZO's think a tandem instructor has to have a medical. In FAR part 105.45.b.3, there is a requirement that tandem rigs be equipped with an operational AAD approved by the manufacturer of the tandem equipment. So, at least here, a parachute manufacturer can decide whether a certain AAD is acceptable. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  10. Your English is fine, and so is your description. I haven't seen that kind of damage, but when I pack a Mirage I try be especially careful about putting pressure on the flap with the cutter because you're pushing down right on top of that cutter and the potential for damage seems pretty large. I always turn the AAD on and off after I pack a rig with an AAD, just in case. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  11. I believe there are two tunnels within 500 miles of Atlanta: Pigeon Forge, TN has a first-generation tunnel that's helpful; Orlando, FL has a newer tunnel that's more popular with skydivers. As far as the pass/fail vs. "you did great, now let's improve a couple of things" - Some students react better to one approach, some react better to the other. Some get beaten down if you say they failed, some feel like you're blowing smoke up their skirt if they know they messed up something and you don't tell them they failed. I think the approach should be customized for the student, but they need to remember that every jump goes in the logbook as one jump, whether the formation came together or not. 13. More info needed. If it's an f-111 canopy with 1000 jumps, I don't know why they would bother to put a new lineset on it. If it's a ZP canopy, it could have a lot of life left if it's been well-maintained. i.e. not left in the sun, not many, if any, water jumps, not jumped in sandy, dusty conditions. Things to look at: where did it come from (Arizona = lots of sun and sand, Pennsylvania, not so much). What is the Date of Manufacture (a few years old = good, many years old = more time to lie around and get damaged). If the fabric is getting worn out, glide, swoop, and flare will suffer. It would be nice if you could give it a good inspection and test jump it before any money changes hands. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  14. I know of several cases where the brakes on a car didn't prevent the car running off the road and hitting a tree, a few where the sudden application of brakes resulted in a rear-end collision, and a couple where the brakes didn't work as designed. I've still got brakes on my car. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  15. Found it on the Australian Parachute Federation site by googling ammo071210/1. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  16. You're not the only one to live with the consequences. In general, one of the problems with sports injuries is that people won't let them heal. This causes more downtime in the long run than if you just rest and rehab until you're back to normal. If you're worried about having to repeat a jump from being out more than 30 days, don't worry about it. Every jump adds one to the logbook. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  17. Lots of good info in only a few posts. This might be some kind of record for Bonfire. Let me add an experience my relatives had. My uncle was on his death-bed with an inoperable brain tumor. He had a DNR, as he should have in this case. He stopped breathing, and his kid's called 911. The medics showed up and revived him. The daughter told them there was a DNR, but the medics on the truck said, "We're not doctors. We can't make that decision even if there is a DNR. Next time, wait ten minutes before you call us." This puts a huge burden on the family, but I guess that's where it belongs. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  20. Maybe the moderators could "sticky" this for a while ?? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  21. This is actually a common and serious practice. At the risk of throwing this into speaker's corner, here goes. 1. Airport surrounded by undeveloped land. 2. Undeveloped land is cheap, because it's near an airport. 3. Developer buys cheap land and develops some of it. 4. Residents complain about airport noise. 5. Residents and developers outnumber pilots and skydivers. 5. Noise restrictions are implemented or, in some cases, small airport is forced to close. 6. Noise level goes down - land around airport becomes more valuable. 7. Profit. I don't know the particular situation that started this thread, but it sounds familiar. You might want to see if AOPA has anything to say about what's going on at your airport. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  22. "...results would be scewed anyway." In Alabama, we spell that "skewed", but you do it the way that makes you happy. Now back to the topic at hand - 72% is piss poor; we can do better. Let's make our goal 100% contamination on each and every grocery cart in America. That will keep our immune systems primed for any challenge. Ya'll have fun here; I'm going to the grocery store. 23. This sounds like the kind of change that works best for executives who want to pay the worker-bees less so they can put more change in their own pockets. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  25. This is boring, run-of-the-mill malfeasance. When I saw the title, I thought this was about the Indiana attempt to outsource its medicaid system to IBM and a couple of subcontractors. (Google: Indiana IBM Medicaid. For more fun, add "lawsuit" or "conflict of interest" to the search). You don't have to outrun the bear.
