  1. Two points. You can get good used gear for less than 5000 bucks, and used is the way to go for most people. Start looking at the classifieds here, but don't buy anything until you get some jumps and talk to your local riggers and instructors. Second, you say you are familiar with using risers. Using risers to slip a round canopy is not at all the same as using risers to steer a square canopy. Someone, (maybe John), said that you would use steering toggles at first. Part of getting your A-license is learning what effect the front and rear risers have, but you want to have a good explanation from an instructor before you do this. The effects will be quite different from what you're used to. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  2. Thanks for the reply. That's the summary-of-parachuting-stuff AC. I was hoping for something crystal clear. In the FAR's and the AC's, I don't see anything that specifically forbids opening a pack, removing an AAD, changing a battery, etc., then closing the pack without refolding the canopy. What concerns me is that in this thread we seem to have two different opinions from two different DPRE's who both know their stuff. When the repack cycle was 120 days, it was easy to say, "You'll need a repack in about a month anyway". Now that same case would be about three months, so I imagine this will come up more often. 3. The law (FAR) is that the emergency parachute must be inspected and packed within 180 days before it is used. What other regulation would apply to this? Is this addressed in an advisory circular? If so, reference please. You don't have to outrun the bear.

It's also useful to go to wikipedia to read about things like High Modulus Aramid (HMA lines) This is a pretty big topic, but that should give you something to start with. 5. It takes more energy to charge a battery than you get back out of it, but that allows you to exchange an inconvenient or unreliable source of energy for something more useful. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  6. Well, there's this: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7894000/Boeing-unveils-Phantom-Eye-hydrogen-powered-spy-plane.html The article talks about a Ford 2.3 litre, 150 hp engine. That's about the size for a C-182 type airplane, and you could rig an engine like that to run on methane if you wanted to. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  8. See, it's that kind of criticism that's driven me to drink. Thanks, 'Twardo. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  9. The original Sabre was square. The Sabre2 is tapered (lightly elliptical, semi-elliptical). This may be the source of confusion. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  10. I see what you are trying to convey in your example sentence. That is all, carry on. By the way guys, I agree with Pete. I would be extremely embarrassed if he were my instructor...... You don't have to outrun the bear.
  11. 1) If not for the self-righteous zeal of former Texas governor Dolph Briscoe, you could have taken care of point 9 with a short trip to LaGrange. 2) Swimsuits are optional in Texas, so I'm sure the pool will be very popular. 3) Nathan sounds like a very reasonable person, and I support his efforts whole-heartedly. With any luck, the trend he is starting will spread. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  15. If the cutaway handle is dislodged and pulled down a little then replaced, a cable could pull down enough to come out of the loop . Something like this could happen if someone picked up your rig to move it for some reason, or when you take it off, especially over heavier winter clothing. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  16. Now's your chance to use that hook_knife you've been dragging around. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  17. Can you route a different sized belt around the things you need without bumping into the A/C pulley? (Sorry Dave, you posted while I was writing. I think you have a great idea! ) You don't have to outrun the bear.
  18. Are you sure they don't do any kind of gear check, or just not one that you saw? It's true, some people don't do gear checks, but most do it for themselves and others and will be happy to do one for you. Don't hesitate to ask. You also might be surprised how many people on the plane are looking at each other's gear and just don't say anything unless they see something wrong. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  19. It's not a joke. You supported ASC, Cary, and Skyride while they were lying to customers and lying about other DZ's. For all I know, you were telling some of those lies. You only turned on Cary after you got cut loose and didn't get what you were promised. Your anonymous apology does not sound sincere. A lot of us in the Southeast have learned not to trust anything associated with Cary, and I'm afraid that includes you. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  20. Sounds like somebody didn't get the Lamborghini they were hoping for. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  21. I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you were sometimes not checking the brake lines at all until it was time to land. I agree with you and Tetra that releasing the brakes and flaring to full arm extension will prove that the brake lines are intact and clear. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  22. You didn't say what errors, but in general, you can get SQL errors from incorrect data even if the code itself is fine. A very small test database is helpful if you have one or can whip one up quickly. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  23. I think there's definitely a danger in not checking the steering while you're up high. What if a steering line was worn or damaged to the point that it broke when you pulled on the toggle. Maybe even worse, what if the steering line was fouled in such a way that it would pull down, but not go back up, putting the canopy in a hard turn that you could not correct. Just something to think about. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  24. Your new here. Don't include MakeItHappen in the dumb-ass category. She has a right to be cynical. In fact, I think it's her sworn duty. At any rate, she seems to enjoy it and we admire her enthusiasm. As Nietzsche said, "Sometimes I get so cynical and pissed-off at the world that I just start spouting philosophy." You don't have to outrun the bear.
