  1. The Scott Lutz of buying gear "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  2. Sounds like he was an amazing guy, never had the priviledge of meeting him though This sad news spread pretty quickly, we heard about it in Quebec not long after the incident... Goes to show how many people this man positively affected. 3. "Why We Jump" Go check it out
  4. Great advice! When I first learned to pack, I could never get the canopy in the bag. Frustration would build up and that wouldn't help me get it done at all! Take things slow, do it properly and relaxed and do it in different "phases" like zero said. There are plenty of time during a packjob where you can lay it down and come back to it later if you need to relax!
  5. Personally, I would dissuade you from buying new for a first rig; however, that's just my opinion based on my goals in the sport. Only you can make the decision for yourself and you should properly inform yourself before making such a decision! If it's any help: the reason that I decided to buy a used rig for my first rig is that I decided I'd rather spend that extra money on jumps and that I would eventually require a smaller container/canopies. I would be able to swap out main canopies and when I get to the point where there are many more jumps between my downsizes and canopy changes then I would buy a new rig! There's an abundance of information out there if you look for it! The best people to answer your questions will always be your instructors as they know your specific case better than anyone that will give you advice on dz.com.
  6. I wouldn't say "Worst Advice" but I always get tired of hearing how I should be dressing up more because it's cold at altitude... Gets pretty annoying by the 4th time on the way from the packing area to the plane. 7. Isn't there an AFF jump that covers unstable back exit to neutral stable position? In all seriousness though it may be a good idea to practice backflying at the tunnel in a controlled environment before starting up in the sky
  8. 1/7/1 Not bad for opening weekend at my DZ
  9. To directly answer this question: Jump - ~25-30$ Gear rental - ~20$ per jump Cost of used bare minimum gear - ~3000$ That being said, if you plan on doing more than 150 jumps, you should buy used gear as you'll get more value out of it than renting. To answer a broader question: Skydiving costs however much you want to spend. You can do 10 jumps a year, or you can do 500 jumps a year. The jumper who makes 10 jumps a year will not be able to participate in the sport aspect as much as someone who is staying current with let's say 100 jumps per year. I sped around 80-90% of my disposable income on skydiving at this time, and so therefore I make many sacrifices to be able to jump as much; but for me it's definitely worth it
  10. I was reading the DB cooper thread for 3 days, made it to page 30....... There's 1,500 pages total Should keep you occupied "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  11. I apologize for not having the misfortune of having to jumping from a skyvan Lucky bastard. "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  12. What? I'm sorry, I couldn't hear what you said. haha nice one! I see.. but a full-face helmet does significantly reduce noise during freefall from experience. "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  13. Next time you're at the dropzone, ask a packer or a fun jumper to help you out for 5 minutes. From past experience, everyone is glad to help
  14. I don't mean to be rude but I don't see how this belongs in General Skydiving Discussions. In my opinion it would be sketchy even for the Bonfire due to borderline advertising. However I understand wanting to point out excellent service
  15. I have never jumped with earplugs nor have I seen/heard of anyone jumping with earplugs. This may be a stupid question but what purpose does this serve? "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  16. Oh god..here we go again. Another golden-boy who thinks he's bulletproof after graduating AFF. Why are you attacking him? He in no way indicated that he "should" be jumping a 170 or that he is even capable. All he did was ask a question. So either answer it with respect or go and post somewhere else. I'm sure there's no shortage of the type of amusement you're looking for in the swooping forum. I'll even start a thread for you if you like. 17. *Back on topic To answer the question in the OP: Not sure what your list is like right now, but if I may add my recommendations in order: 1- Crossfire 2 2- Sabre 2 3- Stiletto 4- Safire 2 Not going to talk about sizes; that's for you to consider as you know more about where you would feel comfortable. But based on your past experience and your future intentions, it seems to me that these canopies are all great for what you're looking for. In the end the decision is yours and I'm sure you'll make the right one.
  18. If you want to learn how to track properly, start naked When you reinforce the proper body position and such, additional suits will only help improve your track. "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  19. Was in the same situation as you toward the end of last year. However, I wasn't sure whether to get an RW or a Freefly suit. (I was a student and wasn't working while in school.) I spent a lot of time looking through the classifieds on here as well as other used gear trading sites. Couldn't find anything that would fit me + had colors that I would feel comfortable in Long story short... I quit school, got 2 jobs and bought two brand new custom made suits I bought a TonySuit Pit Special and a LiquidSky Speed Lunar. Should be receiving both of them fairly shortly just in time for the new season
  20. Yes, that fruit loop takes the cake. Seems like most every DZ I've jumped at had a Farmer McNasty nearby, but this is the first time I've ever heard of a nut who live *miles* from the airport, bitching just because a/c are using the sky overhead. At our DZ we had a woman who lives somewhere past the runway. She made a youtube video complaining about how the plane is always passing over her house. She would stand outside all day and record all the times the plane passed over Silly people... The operation was there before she moved in. 21. I need more time to prepare... "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  22. Scott Lutz should know a thing or two about this, give him a call? "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  23. Clearly you have never tried pineapple wrapped in bacon cooked in the oven... It's DIVINE I'm hungry now "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  24. Yes, I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun still high on the general aenesthesia "Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way." -Alan Watts
  25. You don't need to be a doctor to have the experience required to answer the question that I asked
