  1. And places near the U.S. It's like a domino effect. http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/Caribbean-study-en.pdf You don't have to outrun the bear.
  2. The incidents thread is for posting specific facts about specific incidents. That is part of an educational process. I don't know how many times I've tried to read thru a thread to find out if a specific element was a factor in an incident, only to get swamped by general discussions of general considerations. Just hypothetically, I might want to know what the density altitude was at the time and place of a certain incident. I don't want a definition of density altitude or a discussion of it's effect on parachute flight or a bunch of stories from people who jump where there is high density altitude. I just want one fact about a particular incident. I'm not a mod, so this is just my opinion, but I'd rather see facts in the incidents thread and discussions in gear or safety or general. 3. It's not always fear of cutting away. Sometimes the problem is that the person thinks they can handle the situation. Line twist; I can kick out of that. Line over; Maybe if I pull on the toggles a few times I can clear it. Grease fire in the kitchen ; I don't need the fire department, I'll throw some baking powder on the skillet and smother the fire. When people think they can fix a problem, they'll keep trying to fix it until events prove them wrong. Students are given pretty clear guidelines about when to quit trying to fix a problem and get the reserve out. Whether from fear in some cases or overconfidence in others, sometimes experienced skydivers don't follow these guidelines. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  4. You just let one prominent politician talk about how only the police and the military need cars and watch that change. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  8. The really funny thing about this is that "lewd activity near our children", i.e. in a public park, really would be illegal and could be documented with a video camera. If the children can see it, the undercover cop with a camera can see it. Makes you wonder if the sheriff enjoys his work a bit too much. Actually, I think South Park had an episode like this. 9. At your weight, I would think more like a 190 to start. A container that holds 190 max could probably also hold 170 or 150 later, but check with each manufacturer for specifics. 10. Actually, GDP (or really GDP per capita) by itself doesn't tell you much about a country unless it's really low. e.g. Haiti's per capita GDP is the equivalent of about $1300. That means most people don't have very much, but it doesn't really tell what the economic balance is. In a country like the U.S. or Sweden (per capita GDP > $40,000) there's a lot more to go around but you still have to use other measures to tell how concentrated the wealth is. I think the point of the original article was that people used to settle into a job and stay there, where they now have less job security and stability. In itself, this still doesn't tell you how wealthy people are. In the 19th century, you could have a job for life, but never move up the ladder. There are plenty of workers today who make damn good money for a few years, then are unemployed for several months until they get another contract. Overall, they can do pretty well, even though they have periods of unemployment. The analysis is more complex than you're likely to get in a single article. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  12. When Obamacare really kicks in and the 30 hour work week becomes the norm, will that be considered under-employed? You don't have to outrun the bear.
  13. You told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  14. Whoa, back the truck up. First of all, Egypt didn't have a coup. If they did, we'd have to take away their allowance. And now you're telling me Guinea has a gulf? Mexico has a gulf, Tonkin has a gulf, Persia has a gulf, and now Guinea has a gulf. How come the United States can't have a gulf ? Anyway, the Brits found a way to get the Kardashians off the front page, and for that I am thankful. Carry on. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  18. It's not just about age. In some jurisdictions, the 19 year old boy could be in trouble if he is a teacher and the 16 y.o. girl is his student or he has some other authority over her. (could be anything from a track coach to a shift manager at a part time job). If they don't have that hierarchical relationship, the boy could be in the clear. Can't give an opinion without more details, except to say that if she's not pregnant, she's lucky. You don't have to outrun the bear.
  19. Let me take a crack at that one. Poor people tend to vote Democrat; rich people tend to make campaign contributions to Republicans. You don't have to outrun the bear.

  24. Thank you and FreeFallFiend for that. For one thing, it's kind of annoying to see people grabbing other people's gear without asking first. Secondly, there's more than one way to misroute a chest strap. Pulling on it isn't the way to check it. Looking at it, and seeing what you're looking at, is more effective.
