  1. Remind me not to jump camera for you at the next skydive of the month.
  2. If you want all 100 hours of video on the computer at the same time that will take a lot of disk space, ~13Gig per hour, that adds up to 5 or 6 250Gig disks. Figuring out which program to use is personal choice download some demo versions or use someone else's system, to figure out what you like and and whether that editor will do what you need it to do. Personally I use Sony Vegas, others on here use Premiere, the MAc guys like Final Cut, all of them can do the job depending on what you want to do. What is it that you want to do? Get down to a one to two hour best of video? In which case the clips to do this would end up needing about 30Gigs of space, minimum. But you have to toss out unwanted clips and trim clips down to the 10 seconds you want, to get to this number. Having only 60Gigs free space to get down to the 30 Gigs probably won't work efficiently. A way to approach it is to buy a couple of large disks (120+Gigs) and capture a couple of tapes at a time and remove the unwanted clips from each tape. You may even want to trim clips to the 20 seconds that you want, discarding the rest of the clip, this involves re-rendering the clip to the shortened version. Make sure the editing software you choose can do this without introducing errors. Depending on your capture program you could capture a log of all the clips on a tape and add their subject, that way you could change your mind after discarding a clip and re-capture it easily.
  3. I pulled the silver handle at Lost Prairie last year, had about 50 wingsuit jumps then. Went to deploy at 4000 and could not find the hackey, could feel the pilot chute in the BOC stuck my thumb down into the BOC trying to fish the hackey out it wasn't in there and went to siver. The first thing I did after the reserve opened was to reach back and find the hackey it was right there. I think the top skin of the pilot chute pulled out of the mouth of the BOC some and it let the hackey flip up between the rig and my back.
  4. I am not happy with how mine arrived, after much waiting, it arrived without the triangles on the end cells the used half of my choice for the stabilizer on one end and ignored the selections on the other. But, since it had taken so long to get the canopy I just kept it as is, even though I think it looks stupid, with all turquoise on one end and a turquoise end cell with a lemon stabilizer on the other end. It does fly nicely, although openings get interesting if I don't steer through them. It tends to want to spiral to the left just after inflating.
  5. I'm the idiot that jumped doc's worn out pilot chute, with full knowledge that it was having problems and what had been done to try and make it work for a little bit longer. It made for an interesting jump, hop-n-pop from 3500 with a short delay then a very long hesitation and a sniveling opening with many line twists at 1700' into a spin on my back looking up at the canopy with the ground below it. watching the three rings release and pulling the reserve, still on my back. Lesson learned, if you know the gear needs some repair/replacement don't say it will work for another jump, just go fix it.
  6. I made 12 wingsuit flights at the boogie, on each of them I flew a left hand pattern, and on each of the them the jump plane flew a left hand pattern descending out in front of me. The jump planes flew an extended left hand pattern flying up the line of flight in a fairly gradual descent for ten seconds or so, until they had gained some separation, then they made a long sweeping left turn with an increasing rate of descent. the chance of conflict between the birdman and the jump plane was very small, it would have taken a lot of effort from the birdman to cut the corner and get down to the plane as it started its left hand descent. After a few jumps I could have pointed to the general vicintiy of the jump plane without looking at any point in my flight. It is your job as a pilot to be alert for other aircraft.

  10. my settings: tv 250 100 speed film (or 200 occasionally) 24mm lens manual focus set short of infinity (anything from 3-4 feet to infinity is in focus for most apertures the camera selects while on a jump, except sunset jumps) gaffers tape to hold the focus ring in place no out of focus problems
  11. 800th in 12 jumps, the weather up here sucks, so it should happen at Eloy
  12. This sounds like fun. I'll bring my harness and shoes. It'll be fun to hang out on the rocks. Thanks for coming up with a great idea.
  13. I haven't been out at Snohomish much the last few months, actually haven't jumped in a month, too much work. The description of my malfunction at LP is correct, the mouth of the BOC is a little loose and it allows the topskin of the PC to creep out of the pouch just a little bit, just enough for the hackey to flip into the space between my back and the rig. I am going to get a new pouch installed, especially since the hackey has ended up in that space a second time, but I knew where to look for it this time, so it only resulted in a little bit of delay in the deployment sequence. Jeanne, don't you mean to new back into the sport? I will have both suits with me in Eloy from the 28th thru the 2nd. I will be looking to get some tips from some of the Instructors there on how to slow my un-bird like body down some, other than a diet of birdseed. I plan on getting in some jumps prior to Eloy, it may mean getting down to SDO, since the weather up here doesn't seem to want to cooperate with my work schedule.

    Dr. Nik

Nik, thanks for all your help. You are still in my thoughts.
  18. I just had my first flight on a Tempo 170 loaded at 1.4 at Lost Prairie last week. I did a carving front riser 90 and was really surprised at how far the canopy swooped to a one step landing. The flare was really deep into the toggle stroke. I also demo'd a PD143R loaded at 1.7 last year, before buying a new rig with a 143 reserve. Did 6 jumps on it in a variety of conditions, trying different landing styles, including front riser carve, straight in approaches and sinking approaches. The sinking approach put me on the ground a bit hard, but the other approaches were all nice landings.
  19. Bert's ok, he wanted to spend more time with his wife doing other things. He made the decision a couple of weeks before memorial day.
  20. DDog, My recommendation would be to get a 1394 OHCI compliant PCI card plugged into one of your machines and then hook up a Canopus ADVC100 analog to Digital video converter. Then use Sonic Foundry's Vegas or Video Factory to do your editing and conversions between formats. Video Factory (plus the mpeg2 plug in) plus the Canopus digital video converter and 1394 card will give you basic editor and all the conversion cappabilty you will need for just under $500. If you use the Vegas editor the cost is about $800. Websites to visit http://www.sonicfoundry.com http://www.canopus.com Plus of course if you want to burn a DVD you need the dvd burner and some dvd authoring software. Give me a call. David P.
  21. The chase video was me. My protrack read 200+ mph max speed during the dive down to the formation. We were just a little late getting off the plane, and it didn't help that I fell right at the door and just dragged myself out of the plane. Who wants to do it again?
  22. I'll be out of town that week, but I can get you in touch with a couple of other people who will be around. send me an email.
