  1. I hear that. broke my knee about his age when working at a grocery store unloading pallets of peat moss. I fell off, snagging my left foot ont he "saran wrap" they use to keep the bales together on the pallet ( i was standing on one, unloading a double stack next to it). when my right foot hit the ground, I couldnt hold my weight on it and collapsed to my knee. the kneecap acted like a wedge and SPLIT the femur at the joint. *OW* *OW* *OW* *OW* *OW* it still hurts even thinking about it. thought I was ok, and tried to stand. bad idea. next thing I knew, I was laying on the ground with medic standing over me asking if I knew my own name. that was over 15 years ago, and year by year, it gets worse. I cant stand on that leg partially flexed without it hurting and wanting to collapse. So the nature of his break is extrordinarily lucky, whether he knows it or not. so remind him it could be worse. He could be me... or even worse... Dana Bowman. Dont remember the name? http://www.danabowman.com/home/aboutme.htm a truly amazing man (and skydiver), none the less. 2. I use the "less dry" to dry my stuff that wrinkles easily (several pair of casual shirts and khakis). If I yank them when they are still damp and put them on a hanger, they seem to stay less wrinkled than if I let them dry all the way (and subsequently forget about them bc my wife was too cheap to let me buy the nice dryer with the buzzer) and on a similar note... and ya know why brides wear white dont ya? everyone knows the dishwasher is supposed to match the other appliances! 4. just use an ultra-humongo, ultra cheap send off service (think wal-mart). those places are so damn automated and overloaded that they are only spot checked. Doing it that way and I would be surprised if they DID yank any. Sending it thru a 1 hr service on the other hand.... expect them to get tossed. Unless you hit them at a peak time, then its anybody's guess. so if you can follow somebody with a dozen rolls or so, they'll be scrambling so fast they wont look. (I used to work for a 1 hr lab) Just dont take them anything you wouldnt want to have made copies of. that happens ALOT. when they say " we threw them away" it usually means " I put it in my freak album" Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  5. No we are already setup with daily updates via FTP. the problem is we are getting the viruses "Zero day". Here is what happens... We get the virus say, on the 6th within 24 hours of it being released. Symantec also gets the submissions on the 6th, and creates a signature, which goes into development, and is available via a hidden "rapidrelease" FTP site while it is being tested for stability, and being added to throughout the day. sometime overnight the defs labeled 10/6 rev xx are released into the general FTP server and are available on the 7th. So its already a day late and a dollar short for companies like mine. problem is, we are already getting hammered, and by the time it dissimenates through our update servers, our stupid users have already hosed us. and we have 4 layers. -one on our firewall to stop it as the data stream is inspected (sonicwall). -One on our Barracuda Anti Spam Gateway -One on our mail server itself (clam, hourly updates). -The file servers and workstations (Symantec) Lately the virus has been getting past our servers overnight, then get caught by the updates and jam up outlook as it tries unsuccessfully to download the virus file that next AM. (and the firewall kills the connection to keep it from transferring) Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  6. Yeah, they do... I bought tix for an event this summer at the state fair and they sucked. they were the 2nd of 3 tiers. track (front row), stage level grandstand (what I had), and upper grandstand. I ordered two stage level grandstand, unobstructed seats. when I got there, they were behind a pole, and no kidding, only 4 rows down from nosebleed. maybe 12 rows total of nosebleed. If I looked straight ahead, I could barely see over the overhead stage lights. so I was pretty much in the nosebleeds. Spent the whole 3 hours straining to see around the pole, and having to watch it on the semi-big screens (temporary 72 inchers installed on either side of the stage so not very big). I enjoyed the show overall, but still steaming to this day. If I had known they would be that bad, I wouldnt have gone for more than the nosebleeds. 7. or Sober.q, depending on who's virus defs you use... we are getting hammered here at my office. I finally had to block ALL potentially dangerous attatchments because my users wouldnt listen... Me: "dont open any unexpected attachments" Them: "hey, come here, I got this attachment I didnt ask for and when I open it, nothing happens.... but my system is REALLY slow now". Lets see, 3 of us, 500 of them... doesnt seem fair now does it? for some reason we have been getting these bad boys "zero day". To even come CLOSE to catching them, I have to download the super-secret-squirrel pre release of the defs from symantec because we are getting them the same day that they build the defs for it. (it takes up to 48 hours to get into production if we use regular definitions) I wanna string these bastards up by thier thumbs and have some fun witha blowtorch. (both the virus writers and my users that wont listen) Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!

  9. I hear ya Lew... I made a few currency jumps with him myself. I also trusted him the most out of every TM I know. I was standing in the bathroom talking with my wife a little while ago, and she asked " was this the guy you said would trust to do my tandem?" I had forgotten all about that. My wife is a hard core wuffo, who I doubt will ever jump (but she supports me fully in my love of the sport). I know all of the TM/I's at Richmond are safe... but Sean was the one I would trust the most with my loved ones.... He would always know how to make them feel comfortable. I also found an older picture of him doing what he loved per Diverdriver's suggestion. Its hard to read in the scanned image, but the student's left (our right) hand had "Hi mom" written in red marker. In classic Crossman style, he made sure the shot came off by holding the student's hand in clear view. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  10. Sean was one of the first Tandem Instructors to beleive in me when I started shooting video. I had lurked a few fun RW jumps with him practicing my skills, so he knew I was capapble and allowed me to start lurking his tandems. He opened the door to my video "career" by giving me a chance when no other instructors were willing. His professionalism and concern for safety was so strong that once I was seen jumping with his tandems, other instructors accepted me (rather reluctantly, but still...) . Sean, I will miss you sorely. The sport lost an excellent man, one I know will never be replaced. Not to forget, the boogie will never be the same without his famous BBQ ribs... They were always a highlight of my boogie experience. I'll miss ya brother! Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  11. I own one, and can confirm the hard openings. I called my dealer, who send out a "bubble" slider that was slightly larger. I have never been happier. It now opens VERY smoothly, Generally on heading, and stable. I psycho pack it which also seems to help the openings. On occation I get some nasty line twists on deployment, but no matter how bad, the damn thing still insists on sitting patiently waiting for me to kick out of my line twists. If they hadnt been discontinued, I would buy another in a heartbeat. Its a nice docile canopy, that will give nice and snappy response to inputs when you want them, without being excessively unstable in return. just my .02 Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!

  13. Just try to get a pro to sell you a single print, from an event that costs say, $20 get into (and they didnt get a press pass) for $10. not gonna happen (unless he is REALLY bad at math). I agree with several. Its all about bad "marketing". It was uncool to ask for the slot after the fact... If he wanted his slot covered, he should have offered the print for " $30 flat". If he had done that, I doubt we would all be discussing it. Besides, as a starving vidiot, my question is if he is so hard up that he needs the sale to cover his slot, why was he jumping on his dime, and why not doing it for hire? if he was already on somebody else's jump that was covering his slot, why is he trying to double dip? 14. have your riggers add two small loops to the rig (ours are along the top edge of the left flap as I remember, but dont quote me on that) near where your static line comes out from under the top flap. put a rubber band on each loop and put a single bight in your static line on each rubber band. That helps maintain the integrity of the static line, and prevents premature openings due to wind force on your static line. its works really well. the only premature openings I know of have been due to stupidity... like not making the rubber bands tight enough on the bights, snagging the static line on climbout, etc. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  15. Roy, you should have known that before you bought the camera. And you should have figured out what comprable lens to use with the conversion factor to match up with your video. Are you a cameraflyer or just a skydiver with a camera? peace lew actually, I bought it mainly for ground work, knowing it has a remote cable release that I already have rigged up. the focal length is a small annoyance. next time I'll ask the skygoddess whenever I have a question so I am not just a "skydiver with a camera" ;) Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  16. Agreed... If she's an A, most vidiots will do raw footage for a jump ticket and the cost of the film (if film is shot vs digital) Worst case, it'll cost you an extra $20 on top of the jump tix... (students are a different matter, and likely will be charged standard rates, but still MUCH less than the equipment you'll need to do it right from the ground) IMHO, if her local DZ vidiots wont shoot it for less than the jump ticket and a beer, they arent very freindly, and I would suggest finding another DZ. I could be wrong, thats just how our vibe is. *edited to add: Of course this assumes vidiot availability... My(negative) assumption was that the vidiots are available, yet unwilling. Ooops. Sorry. You should be able to get some pretty good shots of her under canopy and landing, using an inexpensive 200mm or 300 mm lens. For anything in freefall, having a cameraman go with her for the jump is definately the way to go. _Am Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  17. Just starting to use mine for jumping this season. The only complaint I have so far is the conversion factor. Since the CCD is much smaller than 35mm in size, there is a change in what you see vs the focal length of the lens. all values on the lens (which are based on film cameras) must be multiplied by 1.6. In other words, what you see in the viewfinder is correct, just 1.6x closer than you expect based on a lens setting... set your lens to 28mm, you are really shooting at a setting of ~44mm. Not that big of a deal until you realize that the effective focal lenghths between your video and still dont quite match up... ie you either get your stills too close-up, or your video appears to be shot from too far away. just my .02 Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  18. oooh... didnt notice that in your post. I thought you were complaining about the names of the perps... such as "larry brown, 123 main street, arrested for drunk driving" thats an interesting poser. although, if the perp wanted the info, they could still get it if they wanted. 19. trying to get this back on topic... if its an Nvidia video card, check out your settings. You should find a setting called video overlay and turn it on. what happens is whenever you play a video in media player, it displays the video full screen on the TV. 20. why not? Like you said, it IS public record. Besides, most local papers publish the same info daily or weekly, so its already out there for the public to see. Pretty much a non-issue IMHO If you dont want your name published, dont do something stupid/illegal and you wont end up in that list. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  21. actually, as long as you dont try to fly private aircraft AND skydive, its not that expensive. It surprised the hell out of me. Guardian has a policy that I have that is reasonable. I have $100,000 for $20/month and it even covers skydiving. Didnt have to waiver it or anything. Now the kicker is if I wanted to renew my Pilots license.... they wouldnt even touch me if I flew AND was a skydiver.... just a pilot, ok, but it would cost me another 50% more in premiums. Finally, a company that has a firm grasp on the realities of skydiving, not some ill conceived notion that we are playing virtual russian roulette with an automatic handgun. 24. Just curious... have you actually CALLED and done your research to find out how many have been sold? Ever think that since we have a direct order line, that maybe we didnt brag (not saying those that DID post are braggarts) about our actions and just called the number and ordered one? based on your tone, I doubt it (but I could be wrong).
