  1. Apparently your planner didnt look as hard as mine did. I have a life insurance policy through Guardian that doesnt care about skydiving. I can skydive all I want. I can Fly an airplane for a little more money/month. They wont touch me if I am doing both. Luckilly I dont fly anymore. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  2. Try virtually non existent. Asus is an OEM, meaning they make generic stuff for others. if you buy Asus branded stuff, you are expected to be supported by the company you buy it from. Dont get me wrong, I like Asus. They make solid equipment. You'll just be trying to deal with someone in Taiwan should something go wrong and your reseller cheeses out. 3. Nope. Google rec.skydiving. He used to post there. And he also has 18 posts here. The fact of the matter is that Greg is such a great guy, that instead of having icicles forming within 10 feet of where he passes, you feel a tropical breeze instead. He's one of the nicest guys in the world. rl yeah, it always amazes me in this sport, how some of the people you would expect to be TOTAL asses due to thier proficiency and relative famousness are really cool. Mikey mcGowan is also the fashizzle for the same reasons. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  4. Ok, I voted Apple based 100% on the info given. They arent cheap, but are the best for doing all of the above. Here are my reasons: Dell: decent hardware, decent prices, relatively stable. However support will make you climb the walls if you ever have to use it. I spent $150,000 with Dell last year for new servers in one fell swoop. Since then we have moved to Gateway for servers due to the atrocious service we received. IBM: "nobody was ever fired for buying IBM" or so the saying goes. A little pricey, but VERY good hardware. Cant say much about support, as I havent had the opportunity to use it except for servers. That support is pretty good. Apple: good hardware, good reputation, not as prone to viruses. Downside, lack of software options. Unless you want to ONLY do what you indicated above, be wary. finding specialized apps can be a pain. Games arent that easy to find for them. All that being said. if you want a stable, fast platform for video editing, internet, and Ipods, go Apple. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  5. Long term, CDs are a bad idea according to my financial advisor. interest is taxable, so beleive it or not, its possible at the end of the term to end up with less than you started. I cant explain it quite as elegantly as he does, but here is the gist. $50,000 in CDs, reinvesting the dividends at the end of each term. after 25 years, when it all balances out with income taxes, inflation, etc, you actually end up between $5,000 and $7,000 in the HOLE. yes, you have more money in your hands, but what slipped out of your wallet and down the drain thanks to uncle sam it what gets ya. 6. I'm also sure you have taken care of this glitch by calling them, but I have heard horror stories about this kind of thing. They have been known to lock down these donation accounts because no merchandise is changing hands. One really bad incident ended up with the account owner refunding close to $10,000 because paypal locked the account for fraud, and wouldnt take the excuse of it being for "donations" Once again, a great system when it works, but man, can it be a pain the butt when somebody gets a wild hair. 9. so true. As I reflect on your reply, I realize I did exactly what you were originally intending in your post. I tried out several planes, but just happened to always go back to the cheap side. Usually it was because all the 152s were up or in the shop at that moment and I just wanted SOMETHING with wings.] In the end, I wound up with a little bit of experience in all of the most common airframes. 10. I have to disagree mildly. During my training, I predominantly flew 152's because they were cheaper per hour. I made the occational forray into 172s, cherokees, etc and they were nice. I just didnt think they were worth the extra $$ per hour. I got the same instruction in each plane. Yeah, I didnt get as far when we flew, but since we do it based on the hour not the mile, it didnt really matter. In some respects it helped. I would say that it really is 100% up to you. if you prefer 172s, go for it. if you want to save some cash, go for the cheaper planes. either way, one wont make you any better of a pilot overall... maybe one would make you a more physically comfy person, but not a better pilot. Actually, if you choose the cheaper, lesser equipped plane, some would argue that you would be a more skilled pilot. It would force you to be more proficient if you have to do more stuff without bells and whistles in ultra groovy avionics. I am VERY glad all I had to work with were the basics, because I didnt feel as reliant on them. my other tip, if you are here in the states, when you get your ticket, participate in the wings program. it requires a couple hours of refresher instruction per year and a seminar or two, but if you do that every year, you arent required to do your BFR. Well, at least thats the way it was 5 years ago when I stopped flying. Skydiving just took too much cash to be wasting it on flying around. And besides, what would you prefer? 3 hours of relaxed refresher instruction (with YOUR instructor) learning cool new tricks, or several hours with an FAA examiner that is looking for a PASS/FAIL flight? 11. My experience with them is they are very gentle and quiet, and loyal. Personally, I think anyone that wants one is nuts. Yeah, the are sweet, but HUUUUGE. just buy a horse, they arent THAT much bigger. My personal preference is a boxer. a little hyper, but very loyal and freindly. Ours is doing pretty well now that we are going to training classes. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  12. they probably thought it was a telemarketing scam. They have radio spots here to inform people about the service and how to use it both ways (both calling and receiving calls) on the commercial, the operator identifies themself indicating that they are a relay operator (and gives badge #), and ask if the person has ever received a relay call before. The person then says "NOT interested." and hangs up, telling another person with them that it was just some telemarketing call. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!

    IPODS SUCK

Its amazing how some flash and marketing can override the practical aspects of a gizmo. dont get me wrong, the interface on the ipod is da bomb, as well as all the toys you can use it with. But I have had iRiver, Muvo, and Rio MP3 Players. I actually prefer all of those over an ipod. ipods are expensive, bulky, and relatively heavy. Hell, my latest non ipod was subsidized by a free shuffle I won. I didnt even crack the box, just put it directly on ebay and used the cash to buy a functionally better unit. my only complain is that they havent come up with a universal connector/interface to enable MOST MP3 players to use add-ons similar to the ipods. I mean the boombox, etc are cool add ons that would be great for other players, but nobody is working together out there. I love my flash based player. 1gb of music, and its small, light, and works for DAYS on a rechargeable AA. when MY rechargeable battery fails due to wear and tear, I go buy another for under $5. Oh, and I dont have to carry a charger on long trips. if my battery dies, I buy another AA battery and I am good. just another geek's .02 Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!

  16. thank you ALL for your kind words and prayers. I stopped by the hospital today and saw grandma today on my lunch hour. She is doing MUCH better. She is alert, no more nausea or chest pains, and is feeling much better. They hope to have her sitting up this afternoon, and I assume out of ICU within the next day or so. The cardiologist stopped by today, and has said that they arent going to do any procedures on her heart. She seems to be doing well enough that they want to watch her and let it ride. They may re visit the stint/angioplasty angle later, but right now they are leaving it alone. I know in my heart all of our prayers have helped. I just thought you would all want to know that you are helping, and things are looking better. Thank you SO much! Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!

  18. Yeah, you are right. She's a fighter. what concerns us is she has always been active.. and I mean ACTIVE. She would travel at least twice a year. usually one vacation (cruise, etc) with her best freind, and a month or two down in florida when she would help her sister drive to her winter home down in florida. Unfortunately her sister followed the same path she seems to be on. she fell this summer at home, and when she finally mentioned it several days later and we took her to the doctor, they found cancer. a month later she was gone. The concern is that now that she's not as active, she wont last long. And thanks for the heads up. its fixed. damn doctors and thier funny words. 19. Just saw the thread... sorry to hear. Hope you get to jump soon. I'm stuck in a frozen wasteland with stress of my own (grandma is in ICU after breaking her hip at my house christmas eve) and I cant even think about jumping. Every time I jump in the cold I walk away with bronchitis. *sigh*. No air for me till April. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. *HUGS* Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  20. Damn you guys are good... Just talked to Mom. Grandma had a better night, and her doc says her kidneys are functioning again. they can now proceed with some procedures to work on her heart. At last, a glimmer of hope. keep it up guys. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  21. Talk to the doctor. Usually the fall is caused by the break rl Thanks for the suggestion. In this case, it was definitely her knee. its given out a few times in the past. And she even insists that it was her knee. no pain in her hip until she whacked it on the concrete. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  22. Ok, you guys are all so good about vibes/prayers that I had to ask... I need them BAD. My wife and I hosted both our families at our house christmas eve. My parents and Grandma were the last to arrive, and as grandma (she's 86) was taking the last step to the porch, her knee gave out and she fell. We found out that afternoon that she broke the ball off the femur, and since she hadnt eaten yet, and they had a hole in the schedule, they did surgery at 5pm christmas eve. Fast forward three days. She's still in ICU. She is dealing with a small heart attack (or two) christmas night, and now they are struggling with her health. Congestive Heart failure was mentioned, as well as her kidneys shutting down (cascade effect from the CHF). With the recent surgery, they cant use the blood thinners they normally use, so they have the medical equivalent of pushing a rope uphill. They are talking about transferring her from the small hospital she is at to a specialty heart hospital across town for several procedures for her heart. Guys, this woman helped raise me, and I'm freakin scared. She's the first one in my family that actually supported me when I started skydiving. Everyone at first said "you did WHAT? are you crazy???". Grandma was the first to say she was proud of me for getting my license, and always supported me. She even wanted to go. She thought it would be fun, but she wasnt quite in good enough health to go. My wife is especially taking it hard. She is trying to bear the responsibility. We have a split level house. the garage and first floor is at the street, and the yard is sloped up to the front door, which is at the halfway point. you walk in the front door, and you either go up or down a half flight to get to either floor. She insisted on keeping the garage door closed so the downstairs didnt feel chilly, and open it when they got there. We wanted them to come through the garage where its easier to take the inside stairs. Even though my mom said "oh, we wouldnt have gone that way. we still would have come to the front door" the wife is still feeling like its her fault she didnt listen to me and leave the door up. She feels like she caused the whole thing. Oh, and she is the one that insisted that we change things around and start doing the christmas eve thing at our place (this was supposed to be the start of a tradition). So she isnt doing that great mentally. Me and the fam could really use your vibes and prayers. I just pray that they either get her put back together and healed quickly, or that God takes her quickly. She's too good a woman to suffer. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
  23. Well, although he is a total idiot, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about in regards to your rig. He isnt stupid enough to do anything malicious to it, and knows that if he does ANYTHING stupid in regards to his position as your rigger (legal or not) he'll never jump at quite a few local DZs for that stupidity. And if he WERE to do something even moderately questionable, our S&TA doesnt take crap (and neither do three other at large S&TA's around our DZ) . he'll have his rigging ticket AND his USPA membership yanked in a heartbeat. so once again, dont worry about your rig. he has enough pressure (both peer and professional) that you'll get it back as good as you gave it to him. and have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year. 24. I vote Gay as a 3 dollar bill. To those that voted straight... show me one pair of totally hetero roommates that you know that take bubble baths together with no ulterior motives. This explicitly excludes hottubs, adding any females to the mix, dares, etc. I'm talkin two straight guys... in a bubble bath... with a rubber duck no less! And I agree with snopes to a point. I would agree that it may have been created harmlessly enough (or accidentally, or even intentionally by an individual and he didnt share his vision). I am conviced that it was left alone out of convenience so that they can subliminally push the tolerance angle (not that we shouldnt have tolerance). Its easy enough to fix without disrupting much. 25. they actually have e-cards now for that... dead serious. "its not what you brought to the party, its what you left with. you need to get tested for _______" http://www.inspot.org/tell-them/ Sorry to hear about it Hollywood... big hugs! And just when I thought that boy couldnt get any lower on my respect meter... I actually had to adjust my scale after hearing that story. and knowing the SO personally, I vote cold. (and in the distant future) But in all seriousness, go to his place when he wont be there and you know someone else will be to let you in. Get your stuff, and walk away. He isnt worth the effort, really. Two wrongs don't make a right, however three lefts DO!
