To get a fast torrent download you want hundreds of people to be sharing the file. To get a fast *.rar download (that is NOT shared as a torrent), you only need 1 or 2 fast servers. This is the reason a release starts out as a .rar, and ends up on torrent sites. (If you download a torrent file in the .rar form, it's just because someone was too lazy to "winRAR" it and share it as 1 big file) I think you've got it pretty much figured out. I use Azureus on my macbook and i've never had it crash... wierd. The reason an album/movie is in 100 .rar files is because groups of supernerds "release" a new album or movie onto the internet. This is the reason they have fucked up names like (Movie.DVDRip.XViD-ALLiANCE). This release is downloaded off hacked servers across the globe. The entire file is broken into parts so that if the download fucks up, you only lose a small part, not the whole download. You piece these together with winRAR once you've downloaded them. These releases appear on torrent sites after they have been widely distributed already online. Most sites post them as once complete piece (or the 12 songs on the album), but not always. I fail them all horribly and convince them it counts, then have a "make up test" (note the original failed doesn't really count, i lie) and they can redeem themselves.
