FlyingJ 0 #1 November 3, 2006 The thread about what instruments you play made me wonder...If you went to college, do you currently work in the field that you went to school for? For me, not even close. Degree in music performance from a music conservatory - went from college into the arts management field, just finished two years volunteering with AmeriCorps and moving into full time job as a wildland firefighter.Killing threads since 2004. faulknerwn 37 #4 November 4, 2006 Me too! I have a BS and a MS in Math, did computers for a living full-time, and quit it all recently to skydive. I figure I can do computers of some ilk part-time whenever I need money cuz I am good at it too! W
kris2extreme 0 #5 November 4, 2006 I figure i'll probably fall into this category since I'm graduating in a month with a BBA in Banking and I already know I don't want to really be in banking. Though I might go into something on the accounting side of things... accounts payable/receivables or something. All I want is a normal M-F schedule, working very very VERY minimal weekends. Then once I'm out of debt I can become a bum again.
skymama 35 #6 November 4, 2006 Yes, I went to school for Business and now I'm an Office Manager. I only manage myself though and sometimes I don't even do a very good job at that. JENNR8R 0 #9 November 4, 2006 Not really... I have an associates degree in executive secretarial science. In other words, I was in college for two years to learn how to support a boss. Michele 1 #10 November 4, 2006 I hadn't gone to college, but was licensed in the field I worked in. However, I have just returned to school with a definite goal in mind. It is hard, it will be even more grueling, but it gives me a degree in the field I want to spend the rest of my working career in. And it's also in great demand, and will be so for the forseeable future. So not yet...ask me again in June, 2009. ladyskydiver 0 #11 November 4, 2006 I used to. I have a BS in Management Information Systems and worked in IT for awhile. Now, I'm back in school and will receive a minor in biology at the end of this year. And if all goes well, my doctorate in 2011. So, can I get back to you in a few years? Life is short! angrypeppers 1 #16 November 4, 2006 Kinda. I have a degree in Aviation Management. Started the program to become a professional pilot, but ran out of money too many times. After I graduated, I worked in the airlines for ten years or so doing everything except fly the planes: Fuel, ramp, CS, maintenance, and ended up in Flight Ops. I was a Dispatch supervisor when I left my last airline. Now, I'm doing software test on flight planning systems that we sell to airlines and militaries worldwide. Actually, I received a job offer today to do software installations for those same flight planning systems. So, while I'm still working on aviation products, I'm getting deeper into the IT world and farther away from my degree. ChrisBurn the land and boil the sea, You can't take the sky from me. Nightingale 0 #17 November 4, 2006 QuoteThe thread about what instruments you play made me wonder...If you went to college, do you currently work in the field that you went to school for? . Well, the reason I went to college was that I knew that it opened doors that would otherwise be a lot more difficult, if not impossible, to get through. So, I guess it could be said that I've gotten what I went to school for, several times over. To answer your specific question, I was a film/screenwriting major. I worked in the television production industry for two years and decided that I preferred filmmaking and writing as hobbies rather than as careers. Learned a lot, could easily get back into the industry if I wanted to. I just don't want to.

PLFXpert 0 #20 November 4, 2006 I'm in sales. My degrees are in Mass Comm & Sociology (both BS and one minor in Psychology). I suppose sales falls under communication, but my track was magazine journalism. I'm also a freelance writer. I've been published in several magazines and my local paper. I have a recurring position so-to-speak writing for one magazine in particular. But, it certainly doesn't pay well enough to live off of. I was planning on magazine journalism professionally, though. But. I didn't want to move after I met Billy and became quite settled and happy where I was. So, I ended up in sales and have no regrets.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
