  1. An issue I didn't realize until I purchased a ROAM, the battery is non replaceable. When it quits taking a charge it is basically disposable as I understand it. Maybe they will offer a battery replacement in the future but I am sure that waterproofness will be compromised. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 2. Too bad his mother wasn't. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  3. My first rigger used to charge for those #2 pack jobs when he did the next one. 1 for the price of 2, what a deal! Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  4. I have made several "eel" jumps using some of the original ones belonging to Safety Guru Bryan Burke of Skydive AZ. The eels are 60 feet in length and are attached to a suspension line and your shoe. (note: Do NOT attach the eel to your steering line, think about it) Attachment is done with two carabiners after opening. There are 120 foot eels out there. I was also concerned with being attached to my main canopy but during the pre-jump briefing we discussed the various malfunction possibilities and the need for kicking off the shoe prior to releasing the main, if necessary. Another safety issue is maintaining clear airspace. Bryan's suggestion is to keep a minimum 2 eel length separation between any canopy and an eel. As you can see in the pictures, attached below, the eel flies at an upward angle behind the pilot. (note: I have never flown an eel at a wingloading greater than 1.27:1 and have no idea how higher wingloading would effect flight angle) No weight is necessary unless you have only one attachment point, as the leading edge is held taunt. As with any flag, banner, eel, etc, having decent accuracy skill is very important to prevent a snag on landing. Bryan Burke occasionally posts in this forum and may chime in. He is very experienced in eels and all things safety. Edited to add: The material in these eels is kite material and was available in 60 foot max lengths, hence the 60 foot design. 5. Also bring an AAD equipped rig unless you have a D license. This is what I was told, luckily before I drove all the way there without one. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  6. Mine didn't give me an error code, it wouldn't turn off after finding it displaying LFF 56 secs the morning after jumping. Unit wouldn't go past the second blinking red light and then locked up in "Hello" mode. Contacted Vigil who stated that this was an LCD error that was limited to a "small group of units." They stated that the LCD control unit needed to be sent back for a software update. When I asked about the 4 other units that were purchased at the same time (sequential serial numbers) they stated that they did not want me to ship them back unless they developed the problem. Hmmmm. Looked up "Hello Vigil" here on DZ.com and discovered that the "isolated" problem had been reported over 2 years ago. Software issue? I think not. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 7. I build my own tongue switches from Radio Shack parts and have had a couple of failures. Both times due to moisture getting into the switch. Replacing the switch condom more frequently has fixed that problem. On another note, everyone that I know, who uses a blow switch, swears by them and have zero complaints of failure for thousands of jumps. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 8. No one has pointed out which hook knife to use if you so choose. Skip any hook knife made with a plastic handle, which can break when you use them. Also avoid any that have two separate knife blades, which can bind and trap the material needing to be cut. Benchmade Hook/Safety cutters are the best on the market. Expensive but worth the money. They are machined from one piece of tempered steel. Some even have the requisite bottle opener for participating in post jump activities. http://www.benchmade.com/images/pr/pdf/Rescue-Hook-Family2.pdf http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_list.aspx?keyword=hook Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiIcKXIKnkc&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL Check out the next one on his video list... Looks to me like an AFF dive with a freaking costume on. WTF? 12. Looks very similar to the one I have sitting in a drawer somewhere. I would recommend the GoPro or Contour for a personal POV camera as they are well tested in the skydiving environment. 13. I am not sure which model you are looking at. I had one of the early models and can tell you the sound was horrible and the wobble on the video was plain stomach churning. And that was using it on the ground, not skydiving. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)

  17. iFly Utah is very close to Skydive Ogden. They also have one of the best deals going on tunnel time depending what you are after. It is a smaller tunnel than Eloy (12 foot vs 14 foot) but for 1 on 1 training it is fine. http://www.iflyutah.com/ Edited to add: Most of my tunnel time is at Eloy because it is close and the staff are some of the best instructors on Earth. http://www.skyventureaz.com/Staff/Default.aspx Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 19. Have you considered a T2i? I like mine and the only other difference I know of it the flip screen which I don't think I'll ever use. Here is a comparison I located on the net. http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-T3i-vs-Canon_EOS_Rebel_T2i Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 20. Thanks to you and for all of the PMs. I will post a followup after making some calls. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  21. Hello all, I have a friend who is currently stationed in Afghanistan and is coming home soon. He has a residence in the Philippines but will be visiting the Western US for an extended stay in spring/summer. He has done a few S/L jumps in Ohio, prior to military training, when he was 230-250. The aging process has provided another 20 lbs since then. He would like to get licensed while he is in the States. I have done a bit of searching and read every post I can find dealing with heavy students, etc. I am, however, having difficulty locating a DZ which can accommodate larger students. Can anyone point me in the right direction? DZs, phone numbers, etc. Thanks and Blue Skies in advance, Rick Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 22. I did not see the jumper around the DZ when I returned last weekend. Sorry. I will ask the next time I see him. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
