  1. They refered me to Thousand Trails RV park nearby. THis used to be a member only park but not allows non-member overnights. I think they are a bit on the pricy side >$50 per night. 2. I checked into Yellowstone for the way up and almost everything is First come-First Serve. I figured the same for Glacier but I will look into it. Thanks Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  3. This will be our [BEER] time to LP. We are planning on hauling our trailer up from sunny AZ and hitting some National Parks, a couple of DZs and a tunnel during the trip. Question: Should we plan a day trip or overnight to Glacier? Any input would be appreciated (even the sarcastic stuff) Looking forward to finally making it to Lost Prairie. 4. C. Qualifications and initial training 1. Before engaging in canopy formations, a jumper should have: a. thorough knowledge of canopy flight characteristics, to include riser maneuvers and an understanding of the relative compatibility of various canopies b. demonstrated accuracy capability of consistently landing within five meters of a target 2. For the first few jumps, begin with stacks and planes, as offset formations are less stable. 3. Initial training should be conducted with two jumpers--the beginner and a canopy formation specialist--and include lessons in basic docking, breakoff procedures, and emergency procedures. 8. The last rig I purchased was through DZ.com and I did exactly as you have outlined above. I explained to the seller that even though the gear had been inspected by their rigger, I would need my rigger to inspect it before I would put it in the air. The seller stated he really didn't want to send the gear without payment but if he were in my shoes he would want to do it exactly the same way. I explained that if the gear was as good as they said it was that they would have their cash within the week and that I would cover his shipping charges if I purchased the rig. I had them ship the gear, insured, to my local USPA listed DZ at their expense. I had my rigger inspect the gear ASAPractical (be there if you can, you will learn a lot about your "new" gear). During the inspection we discovered several small issues with the container that would need attention before my rigger would deem it airworthy. After a little phone tag with the seller we agreed to complete the sale of the main and reserve canopies only and I returned the container to them. I made payment through Paypal for our newly agreed amount and reimbursed him for the initial shipping charges. This arrangement is quite common in my experience. While there those looking to rip us off, real skydivers, who are acquainted with real dropzones, are pretty trustworthy. Just do your due diligence in asking the right questions about the seller as well as the equipment. Verify what they tell you about themselves by calling their local DZ for a reference and offer them to do the same with you. Good luck shopping and as always...Blue Skies! Rick PS- What are you looking for? I may have it sitting in the closet. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  9. While in Eloy for last weekend's boogie, I noticed a CRW Camp flier. While it is not listed on the Skydive AZ website calendar, it is happening April 17 & 18 with NO EXPERIENCE or CRW EQUIPMENT NECESSARY. NO REGISTRATION/COURSE FEE. Just pay for your altitude. What a deal! Kevin Vetter and Brian Pangburn will have canopies for use and it looked like they will be covering some rigging on the evening of the 16th. I will try to get all the info and post it here ASAP. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  10. Scott, Thanks for the kick ass day! I am absolutely hooked and looking forward to my next flight. Feels like I might have to call in tomorrow (today) with an eye problem, as in I can't see coming to work today when I could be flying with all of you. Blue Skies and long flights! 11. I was lucky and had access to some through an A&P mechanic friend. He says that you should be able to order some through Avial. He says to use Hysol EA934. Here is the spec sheet. http://www.mtpinc-exporter.com/chemicals/tds/Hysol%20EA%20934NA.pdf This crap is expensive. The only place I found it on the net was $100 per quart. It might be overkill but I'd compare anything else to the Hysol before I used it. The white stuff is a polyurethane foam which I used as a light weight filler since I wanted a plate which was larger than my helmet. I then covered the foam with nylon screen material and covered that with Devcon 2 Ton Clear Epoxy http://www.devcon.com/products/products.cfm?familyID=179 This may be strong enough to use for mounting the plate. I used it because it dries crystal clear. I stayed away from all fiberglass since I was hoping to keep the weight down. I had intended to use some carbon fiber with epoxy but had a timing issue and I live in a small town which meant ordering carbon fiber off the internet. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 12. I decided against JB Weld as it seems brittle when cured and more so when subjected to cold temps. I used an aviation grade epoxy to secure my base to the helmet. I used a piece of fiberglass honeycomb as my "perfectly flat top". I used one bolt in the center as insurance for the epoxy. For my top mounting plate I used counter sunk nuts in the fiberglass honeycomb so the aluminum plate could be easily removed and reconfigured in the event I wanted to make changes. See attached pics. 14. http://www.pcprg.com/tongueswitch.htm I realize your post was in regard to the blow switch but using info from the above link I built a tongue switch for around $6. 16. Quote from article comment "schimingin 1 day ago That sounds like a lot of fun!!" Well at least they had some positive results from the story. I still can't figure out how he missed the landing area from the video. I suppose they may have been downwind to begin with. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 17. Ironic that this is posted as I sit in my recliner after what I can only describe as my worst opening EVER. It was the first jump on my newly finished semi custom helmet weighing 6.6 lbs total. 18. I hear you on the cheap lenses but this is my first DSLR and I couldn't stomach the sigma price tag. I will certainly upgrade after I pay off the current set-up. 19. Just purchased an XSi after waffling between the T1i and XS for awhile. Both the XSi and T1i use the same sized CMOS sensor. From what I could gather reading camera reviews, by packing more pixels onto the same sized sensor you will have more noise in certain situations. I am far from a DSLR expert but I felt that unless I really wanted the video option the XSi will do well for me. I ended up picking up the Kit with the 18-55 lens and the 55-250 lens for $625. 20. Problem: rec.skydiving consists of three people flaming each other. I like the dropzone.com _content_, but I'm not wild about the _interface_ . Eule Exactly, you never see anyone flaming here. 21. Nice work! I'm not sure where I found the link but I did see your slide show before. It was one of the projects that inspired me to try my own. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! CWR #23 (It's called CRW, add an e if you like, but I ain't calling it CFS. FU FAI!)
  22. Sorry for the bad clicky - http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=38518&id=1528170363&l=5ecd20defc DSE- I did the oven bake of the helmet prior to modifying and have some extra padding too boot. The helmet fits pretty tight and I ratchet the chin-cup TIGHT. Total weight of the system is 6.6 lbs and it is centered over the spinal column. It feels pretty stable on the head (as stable as the video cam alone was). I have yet to make the maiden voyage so I will have to get back to you on how she flies. This helmet project was intended to see if I wanted to tackle a CCM of my own. At this point I am not sure it is worth the effort. I was able to keep the costs down with some creative engineering and utilizing a great technical assistance from a friend. Will hopefully get in the air sometime early next week since I am on shift till Monday A.M. Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 23. So after looking at every post in this thread I am almost finished with my semi custom camera helmet. I started with a Bonehead Mindwarp that had been modified with a side mount D-Box and a small custom top plate. After jumping the video cam in both the top and side mount positions, I decided I wanted both vid and still on top but didn't have the real estate to maki it happen. Thanks to my good friend Chris, we stripped her down and started over. Here are a few pics from along the way... Sorry about some of the pic sizes. I was just over and had to compress them quickly so they may be a bit small. See the complete project at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=38518&id=1528170363&saved#/album.php?aid=38518&id=1528170363 Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings! 24. I have been searching for several items in the classified section of DZ.com. Since I have a bad memory (except at pull time) and people seem to continually relist their unsold items, can there be an option to copy myself when responding to an ad? If I was responding from my personal email, I would be able to check to see if I had already sent a request/interest email to the classified poster. Quite often I find myself wondering if I had sent a reply to an ad and whether or not the lister has responded. Thanks Blue Skies, Soft Docks and Happy Landings!
