Perhaps I've misread some statements in this thread, wherein some indication was made that less respect is accorded these women because they were prostitutes; and because of the less respect accorded, the aspect of "dispensible" comes to the fore. If I've misread anyone, I apologize. However, I don't think I have. Prostitutes are easier targets than, say, me. They earn their living in an environment that is dangerous, and because of the transient nature of the business, they can go missing and no-one really realizes it for a time. This allows the killer two opportunities; he can get the woman into a position that they cannot fight back, and then have some time to dispose of the body without anyone realizing the prostitute is even missing. Time is on the side of the killer in this case...and in most murder cases. But the refrain I've heard is that because they are prostitutes, they've chosen to put themselves in danger and thus deserve whatever they get...and that's wrong. Just wrong. Again, these women were women before they were prostitutes...and they were human before that. And that means they get all the respect a human being deserves. And they'll get that from me. Dorbie, that's secondary to women being killed. It's not the issue, no-one is trying to define the way you use words. Perhaps what they're suggesting is that no-one deserves to be murdered..."whores" or not. Perseveration on the words described is nothing more than fluff and distracting from the issue - women are being targeted, and murdered. As it will be from me. No one deserves to be killed...and the killer deserves our utter disdain, as well as our anger and hatred directed towards him and not towards his victims. Maybe that's the issue to you, Dorbie, but to me, the issue is that women are being murdered. No one deserves that, irrespective of their life or "job". No one deserves to be killed. That is the issue at hand...not that the oldest profession in the world is still alive and well. We know that, it's happening all over. But there is a serial murderer out there, who should not be less hated, no less vilified, no less hunted because he targets women who are prostitutes. Once these women were babies. They were sisters, mothers, daughters, aunties. They were alive...and now they are not. That's the issue. You might think it's about paying someone for sex; but really, it's about victimizing women. That is a wild shot...great call by the pilot, and glad to see it down in one piece. My brother and his family lives in Oregon, and they got walloped by the winds. Dave drives one of the massive cranes (the kind that can reach up to the top of high rises...), and told me it was a bit hairy; he was doing some emergency work on one of the bridges because of the storm last month (washed out some of the walls, I guess, in the Hood River), and promised me he'd get free of the crane before it went over. It never did, but he said it was close. And my sister-in-law and the babies lost power, too...so they camped out in the family room with the fireplace going. Wicked weather, to be sure. I'm sorry to hear that she's passed, but happy she's relaxed and resting. And I echo the final arrangements being done prior to someone's death...my father and I did that about 12 years ago, and I know exactly what he wants, and where he wants it...because he's set it up totally. And last year we handled his living trust, so I am more fully cognizant of what he wants done with everything other than burial. We've even selected some of the music for his memorial...Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, and Frank Sinatra. LOL... It's tough. But it's good. And again, my condolences and prayers to you, Jerry. Leukemia is not brain surgery...which is what Sen. Johnson has just gone through. Lots of people work through cancer. Not so many work through brain surgery, you know? Yes. Dad, being 84 now, says he spends more time at funerals and memorials than other "events". He went to a memorial for a friend on his birthday, for pete's sake. Dad and Peter studied with some of the same studios/instructors, and while Peter was more of a comedian than Dad was by training, Peter also did serious roles, and studied all aspects of the craft of acting. A sad loss, but Peter was ill and is no longer suffering. I took it in high school - but that was so long ago that I decided to do it again; not that much new has been added to beginning chem, but I hated it then, and don't remember a lot of it so it will serve me to repeat it. And the only way I can survive it is like taking bad medicine - fast, quick, without thought...just do it. So I'm gonna just do it. And since it's my only class, I will be able to keep up. I hope. I'm getting the book tomorrow and starting to read through it now so I can have some understanding prior to starting the class. That's the hope, at least. I am not looking forward to this, though. I finish mine in 9 days....next Thursday is my last final; Anatomy Lecture. Between then and now, I have the Anatomy Lab, Biology, and Political Science to do. Then there's the winter intersession - Chemistry. 5 units, 5 weeks, 5 days a week. And then there's next semester...microbiology, physiology, and english. Sigh. I don't get to breathe until next June...and even then I won't be breathing. Just a 2 week break before summer classes begin. Dunno what I'm going to take then just yet...prolly some psych and upper level bio stuff. But I dunno... I just gotta get through the next 9 days without dying...killing someone...or losing my mind. Mine start next week. The day after my last final I'm flying out for Christmas to Oregon. Then home on the 27th, and on the 3rd I start winter intersession. And then I start spring semester. So I won't be done for a while. Only one week (well, 10 days) between this semester and winter classes, and then only 3 days between winter and spring. Sigh...a long and winding road for me... Thanks for that. I'll let him know he's got a fan base in skydivers. We just celebrated his 84th birthday...and he's still dancing, singing and drinking. A little more slowly, and a little less steadily (that might be because of the drinking, though...), but he's still singing. Serenaded a few people in Toys R Us yesterday, while loading a second shopping cart for his grandkids' Christmas gifts. I love that guy, you know? Just really, really love him. He's so cool. It's not the best, but he's still hanging in there. The infection is pretty bad; he's on all sorts of heavy duty antibiotics and doing as well as can be expected when one has a systemic infection like that. However, he starts chemo today - Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and they think it's stage 4 (still determining that when I spoke with LaDonna this morning). They have given him a less than cheery outlook, and that's hard to take on everyone's part. LaDonna is handling this as well as can be expected - better than I would, I think. But she still needs your love/prayers/vibes...this is going to be a long, rough road no matter what the outcome. LaDonna, a poster here (although she hasn't posted in a while), needs your prayers/vibes/love. Her brother is very, very sick, and they are not sure he will make it. She is flying from San Diego to MN as I write this, to be with him before he passes if at all possible. He has a very bad infection, his heat has stopped at least once, and it will be touch and go for a while. She doesn't even have a coat - and it's about 10 degrees back there right now. That's how fast all of this has gone down...
