  1. Travel insurance is used in case part or all of your trip is canceled for an unforseen reason. It's most frequently used when booking a cruise. Say your flight is canceled and you can't get on another one (unlikely but used as an example) and you miss the boat. The travel insurance would cover any non-refundable costs, usually the cost of the cruise since it wasn't the cruise company's fault you missed the boat. Some travel insurance also covers medical costs while you're on the trip because your regular medical insurance either doesn't cover you at all while out of your country of origin or has very limited coverage. Say you get very ill in a third world country and you need to be evacd for medical treatment. That would be very expensive and your regular medical insurance probably wouldn't cover it (or you'd have a huge co-pay).
  2. If you think you might even be a little interested in continuing on to get your license be sure to tell your tandem instructor. That way he/she can give you more information about the jump and let you help steer the canopy some and make it more than just a ride.
  3. You can find the requirements for obtaining your coach rating as well as what you can do once you get it in the USPA IRM (Instructional Rating Manual). Here is a link to a PDF version of it. http://www.uspa.org/publications/manuals.pdf/2008IRMEssentials.pdf
  4. Do a search here on DZ (Dropzone link at top) and start calling around.
  5. The $6500 up front is in a counterfit check and they want you to "refund" the difference to their "shipper". Then by the time the check comes back as bad it's too late and you've lost the item and are out what ever money you've "refunded" to them.
  6. It was probably in a storage unit that someone didn't pay for. The owner of the storage unit files with the courts to take the property contained in the unit and then sells it to recoup past due amounts on the unit.
  7. Why doesn't 1 person pay the $20 fee, register and then post a list of all of the skydiving events listed? Or do you need to register (pay) for each city?
  8. Thanks for all of the suggestions. At this point it looks like we're going to check out Lake Wales Tuesday and then stay in Orlando by the tunnel because I'm going to attend the coached tunnel time that Jason from Sebastian is doing Tuesday evening. We'll head to Z-hills either Wed and Thur or Thur and Fri and then hit Sebastian Sat and Sun. I'm not sure I'm up to trying a boogie just yet, I'd like to get some more jumps under my belt first. If you see a couple of new faces walking around come up and say hi. Curtis
  9. A friend and I will be making a trip down to Florida next week for a sky diving vacation. We're looking for suggestions on reasonable hotels/motels near Z-hills and Sebastian. We'll be staying in Orlando, just down from Sky Venture on Tuesday (1/29) evening and I plan on attending the tunnel time Sebastian has planned for that evening. We will probably check out Lake Wales Tuesday during the day since we get into Orlando at 10AM. What would be the best days to check out Z-hills and Sebastian? Thanks for any suggestions. Curtis
  10. I believe that is what 1-800-skydive does. It's not a booking service per say but is a general phone number that is directed to specific DZs based on the geographic location of the caller.
  11. You could always ask your DZ to check the USPA website to see if your license is listed. It might just have been delayed or lost in the mail.
  12. For some reason when you first fill out your profile on DZ.com the default for Freefall Photographer is set to Yes.
  13. Get it for him as an early birthday present in August or September. If he doesn't get started until the beginning of October he would most likely have to wait until spring to finish. At that point he'd need to take a refresher course and repeat the last AFF level he completed in the fall.
  14. I posted a suggestion in the Suggestions and Feedback forum suggesting that they implement blacklisting email addresses that can be used to register a new account. This would at least make it more effort for [email protected] to register because he'd have to come up with a new email address each time. Or we could just add his email address to every known porn/spam mailing list on the net.
  15. There is one specific email address that seems to be registering all of the time to scam sellers in the classified ads. Would it be possible to add functionality to the registration process that allows you to maintain a blacklist of email addresses that can't be used to register. I know most versions of phpbb do this.
  16. I did level 2 twice, level 3 three times and level 4 five times. Then I took some time off and started back up on level 7 and breezed right through the rest.
  17. Depends on the drop zone. Some offer a 1 jump rental price as well as a daily rental price. Best to call in advance and ask. You might also want to ask if the drop zone requires a certain level of license (like your A license). Generally if you are working on your student jumps the cost of your training includes the use of gear.
  18. Well, with 33 jumps under my belt, I passed my check dive yesterday. I started my AFF way back in '03 but didn't do too well because I couldn't make it to the dropzone on a regular basis. I repeated level 2 twice, level 3 3 times and level 4 5 times. Then winter hit and I wasn't able to jump until the next spring when I went to Orlando to do a tunnel camp. I passed level 5 & 6 on the first try. But I had to take a 3 year break because of work and moving several times. I finally got started back up with level 7 (after my recurrency) this past June. This time I was able to make it to the dropzone just about every weekend and it really made progressing much easier. I was able to get my water training and B written test done last Monday and will have all of my 10 meter accuracy jumps done by the time I hit 50 jumps. I want to thank Sherry and everyone at Aerohio for all of their help. See you in the skys! Curtis
  19. On my AFF 1, my two AFFIs (they were dating) got into a very heated agrument (screaming at each other) about something that had happened the night before. was already geared up and we were on a 5 minute call. I was very uneasy going up with them but I made the jump anyway and it went fine. But when I went to manifest for my next jump I asked that they not be my AFFIs. I think that you made the right call. It's your call as to if you're getting out of the plane. When you go back to try again you might want to tell manifest you'd like to spend some additional time with the instructor before getting on the plane. Good luck. You can do it.
  20. My question would be "What percentage of donations are you earmarking for administrative purposes?" Ie, what percentage are you keeping (not giving to the charity or the DZ)?
  21. Man Billy you beat me by a few seconds but I took the time to look at the OP's location (which is not in the US) so I wasn't going to post the USPA info. The Parachute Association of South African (PASA) has a website at http://www.para.co.za/ and I'm sure you can find the license requirements for SA there.
  22. Google is your friend. Enter number of inches (or however they are listed) in meters (or what ever metric you wanted converted to) And you'll get the result.
  23. Kitchen Nightmare's will be on in the US this fall on Fox. Saw an advert for it last night during Hell's Kitchen.
  24. That is only valid in a vacuum where there is no air resistence.
