  1. The chairman on the panel gets to have privilege in terms of starting events or kicking off investigations if enought members of the panel have called for one to be started. In some cases the chairman is a republican and would need to call an investigation against his own party and specifically against the presidents family. That will burn a LOT of political capital and will end up exposing a lot of dirty laundry no matter what the investigation finds so its in the parties best interest not to start it. The minority party on most of the panels really has no option except to get a few members of the majority party to also ask for an investigation to be started. For things like the Equifax breech this was easy to get members from both parties on board to kick on an investigation into the issues. Wells Fargo was interesting since the Dems were able to get the investigation into their fraud kicked off a few years ago but in the last 12 months the investigation and most of the hearings have stopped. September 11th Commission was another one that both parties wanted to have someone dig into it deeper. Benghazi was launched against the desires of the Dem's since the Republicans were the majority party and the chairman used his privilege to start (and kick off multiple different investigations each time it came back with nothing) over their objections. This is one of the fears of the Republicans come Fall if they lose the house - every panel will get new a Chairman and they can now start all these things that are being held at bay right now.   2. I've got some rigs with old canopies that I pack with no issue (My personal reserve is 18 years old with 14 repacks) but I also reject some rigs due to the jumper and their gear choices. I turned down a jumper that has a MicroRaven 135-M that's loaded about 1.7ish. Canopy is in decent condition but its racking up the repacks (guessing 40-50+ since it was from the 120 day repack cycle era and had a few rides but a lost datacard) and its a horrible choice for the jumper so I don't want my name on it. Same with a Phantom 145 that I see every few years - I have got to the point where I am done packing it since its now approaching 30ish years old. The jumper could probably land it but since he's 210+ out the door and not current - its not getting packed by me anymore. Hard limit on age at 20 years? No but I fully will drop clients if they have older designs or their gear is racking up a ton of repacks and I know they are pushing the limits of what the gear is designed to do. I have a Raven II that was dropped off this week that is from April of '91 (27 years old) that I'm packing.   3. There is also the possibility of "employing" instructors that were not really legal to work in the country in the first place. The instructor in the tandem fatality was from South Korea. There are some very specific rules and regulations to hiring someone if they are here on any sort of travel visa. I have never heard of anyone ever being granted a work visa / work permit specifically for skydiving here in the US, it might have happened but its going to be a pretty unusual situation since the DZ has to demonstrate a lot of need and an inability to find enough qualified talent to fill their open positions as is. I've seen a number of DZ's that hire "instructors" from overseas that are technically visiting the US on a tourist visa. That visa is technically ineligible for work of any type. Depending on what is happening this could be an issue also - if I was a contractor that had worked at Lodi for the last 5-7 years I'd be making sure my taxes had been properly filed and that I had the right to actually work at the time I was getting paid.   4. Lets tackle the weight issue first. The correct solution is to tell the rest of the 100 way that you are happy with your body just the way you are and they need to deal with you with your current weight. I don't care if that means they all need to put on another 10-15 pounds of lead or just eat a few pizza's each - fuck them its not your problem that they fall so slow. And on that topic they need to be able to take a harder dock - if you jumped once in the last half dozen years you should be fine since it will all come back once you step out the door. If they can't take the hard dock they need cut and replaced by someone else that can. Hey, I know its been a while since you jumped so while the logbook was being updated did make sure the repack is showing as current also? I know this one is often overlooked but most manifests seem to catch people on this so at least make sure the signature looks close to the others on the repack card and that its correctly dated. Bic pens are most often used but sometimes the ultra fine sharpies - get the pen choice correct and practice a few times before signing the data card. Don't ever date it for the future - thats a sure fire way to not jump that event. As for the tunnel thing, just call up one of them and get the 2 minute package. That's twice the length of a normal skydive so if you do that then make sure you count it as 2 or 3 jumps in the logbook since you are learning a lot more in the same amount of time. Just make sure to mark it as like an 18k jump or so to account for the longer freefall time or else it raises flags when someone looks at the log book - been busted on that one a few times myself so take that as a free lesson learned. This is really funny since I have been doing AV research for 13 years and have been onsite with 30-50% of the Fortune 50 in the last 7 years and have had con calls with just about everyone else so I know exactly what most of them are using at the Enterprise level. There is a reason that none of those vendors listed have won any major enterprises nor US government contracts. Home products are different than Enterprise so some of the features that those company's need and want are different than their home products. None of the three you mentioned have been in use in any of those locations. The first one has admitted that they upload files (not just hashes) from consumers and enterprise computers for their own internal analytics if they think they need it. This means your files that are personal get sent off in the background with out you knowing what they do with the file. Every other organization that I talk to only does this with very strict opt in and never without informing the user directly if they want that to happen on each file. In fact at the enterprise level that is usually a major violation of multiple regulations and privacy laws so organizations face major issues using it. My favorite vendors do WAY more than just running signatures and end up doing things like machine learning and file activity tracing cross platform along with having central management consoles that allow you to control the configuration of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of systems in a single console. I'll hit a few points I see - Microsoft tends to score a about 85% percent for detection and the majority of the rest of the other major AV vendors in testing at about 97-99%. If you are the type of user that only gets online hits a few sites and does not email nor download anything they will meet your basic needs. Beyond that I'd avoid Karspersky for a lot of reasons but anything else will be fine. The "Bloatware" is usually a user issue since at the cost of development most organizations do not want to develop anything more than needed so clearly a large portion of their user base is wanting the features they sell. One thing I would say is to look at if you need multiple licenses or not - some include the ability to run on multiple devices and others are on a system by system pricing plan. As an aside it was really fascinating to see how CCLeaner was hacked earlier this year and it took them so long to identify the issue.   7. Are you pulling this from the Aviation Weather TAF's or other sources? The TAF's are great since they have the cloud cover and what it's going to be doing at each weather transition.. Just since the forecast with the local news station says cloudy does not mean much if the clouds are going to be at 15k all day. Same if the forecast says partially cloudy but the TAF's call out that it will be Scattered until 10 and then overcast at 2500 feet after 1PM. I am on an HOA board and they do serve a purpose - we have been able to get non-operational vechicles removed from homes when its clear that the owner is not going to repair it in a timely manor. We have also addressed issues such as people putting up fences when they are prohibitted and someone from putting stadium spotlights on their outdoor basketball court that were brighter than the fucking sun and turned about 15 homes into a spot that was so bright that it could be seen from the space station. Its easy for them to get out of control but as long as they are pretty up front on their purpose they can serve to protect property values of the residents. Its actually a requirement around here that if there is a housing development with more than about 20 homes it is required to have a HOA/Civic association as part of it being authorized for developments. There were a few - the engine he jumps in looks a LOT like the one Luke jumps in to in The Empire Strikes Back and when she wakes up that's a lot like the lights used in one of the Rogue One trailers.   12. Akamai and Cloudfront are Content Distribution Networks that are serving up content for thousands of webpages. They basically are mini nodes closer to your location so that when you make a request of a page it does not have to send all the data to you from Seattle if you are in Miami - it instead can see that Akamai has a mirror of that file in Orlando so it sends that file to you instead - allow for faster downloads and its cheaper on the backend for the hosting site. Lets say you go to a news website - that site might be hosted in Switzerland but you live in Texas - the site would use Cloudfront to store mirrors of all the video files at dozens of locations around the world so that when you click play on "NewsSiteSwitzerland.com" it is really pointing to a file that is at NewsSiteSwitzerland.cloudfront.com - then when you want to play that file they figure out that getting it from Dallas is the fastest path for you instead of needing to transfer it over a slow link would be in the way if it needed to be pulled from Switzerland.   13. My thoughts - the sky will teach a lot of bad lessons and will need to be retrained out in the tunnel. For sit way too many people have their arms way behind them in the air and end up using some of their rig to control their body position. No rig in the tunnel means you now are having to fly more upright and controlling things a lot more with your entire body. In the tunnel you need to be able to fly on your back to a point before sit - no one ever practices that in the air. Olav broke both of his arms in the tunnel at a time that he was one of the greatest HD flyers in the world since he just jumped in and tried to fly with out seeing the differences between the sky and the tunnel. In the sky if you wobble and move back and forth a bit its not a huge deal with a single other person, in the tunnel you only have maybe 6 feet on all sides, a slight wobble will suddenly translate into a large amount of drive and there is nothing but a glass wall in front of you. Also in the sky its pretty common to have drive (forward or backward) and the partner just is chasing you. That drive in the tunnel will put you into the wall. Its as much learning to fly in one spot as it is learning to bail safely and then all the time needed to reset and try again. Its not uncommon on a 90 second rotation to spend 10 seconds walking out and getting set with the grip and flipping upside down, another 5-10 seconds to start to work on getting lift again and then spend the next 10-20 seconds balancing only to bail and need 10 seconds to transition to walking and then the cycle starts again. Out of 90 seconds you might only have spent 30-40 actually upside down flying.   15. The firebolt is pretty dated and is between the Stiletto and Sabre in terms of its performance. The Pilot is close to how the Firebolt flies. Not many really high performance pilots would really be that pleased with how it flies when its compared to any of the current designs out there even when you look at the non-crossbraced models.   17. I am a part time rigger that typically does repacks after I put kids to bed and stuff like that. My clients know that they can drop their rig off on a Monday and I'll get to it some time during the week so they can jump on the weekend but it might be Monday night, over a long lunch from work mid week or Thursday at 10 pm when I get to it. I have a few that will come by and sit while I do the repack but if they are a "I want to drop it off and wait for it" thats usually a rush fee since its meaning I need to clear my schedule just for the repack.   18. 0-60 in 1.9 seconds? Sounds like some serious fun there! Not to mention its 600 mile range? Rumor is the "Special edition" will be doing about 1.8 seconds in the 0-60. Thats putting it in the range of an F1 race car. I want to see its top speed... The Model 3 is getting 300 miles per charge, the Volt is getting 350 or so per charge. That's putting it in the range of a 5-6 hour drive before needing to charge up again. Its been a while since I've done a road trip of more than 6 hours straight with out needing to get out and stretch my legs and fill my gas tank. The recharge time on a supercharger is 20 minutes to 50% charge, 40 minutes to 80% and 75 to 100%. Most trips I take now need some fast food breaks and breaks for the kids that are at least 15-20 minutes long every 3-4 hours or so. I could easily change those over to a bit nicer food option and charge up to the 80% mark which would get me another 250 miles or so. To be honest in these days of fairly cheap airfare the thought of doing 10-15 hour drives with the family just sucks when I could fly all of us for about $800 and we are there in 2-3 hours and ready to go and enjoy vacation.   19. During a demo jump the jumper flew over a crowd and then realized he was not going to make his landing area and ended up turning into a roof while trying to land. He suffered fatal injuries during this landing.

  21. We just bought a car last week and weighed very heavily an Electric but ended up with a Hybrid. I see in the next 5 years electric taking off with multiple models. I fully predict that the gas car I have will be the last full gas car we will own and all future will be electric or hybrid's of some type.   24. Looks like Start is moving forward with their plans since this is now being granted a variance to be a 180 foot tall building. This and the iFly tunnel would be about 13 miles away from each other. Start Skydiving received approval this week to increase the height of its proposed vertical wind tunnel another 50 feet, from 130 feet to 180 feet. The approval amended a previous development plan approved last fall. Once completed, the project will be the tallest indoor vertical wind tunnel in North America, according to John Hart of Start Skydiving. The project will allow people to have a skydiving experience in a more controlled environment as well as complement the outdoor skydiving business at the airport, he said. In addition to the recreational component to be built at the Middletown Regional Airport, Hart said the facility could also be used for aerospace research by businesses and the military. City economic development officials said the proposed facility would create about 30 jobs. In addition to the research component, the project could be eligible for funding through an new $50 million JobsOhio research and development program. The wind tunnel features a single loop design and has a 17-foot diameter and recreates the physics of free-fall by producing a more 20-foot-wide column of air at the top so skydivers can practice for several hours instead of several minutes experienced from a free-fall from a plane. The proposed wind tunnel would have a 90-foot freefall, he said. “There would be nothing like this in North America,” Hart said. Hart told the Middletown Planning Commission this week that he is already working to procure military and commercial contracts to use the proposed facility. In addition, he said about $8.5 million in parts to build the wind tunnel are already in crates waiting to be shipped from Dubai to Middletown. “We can have a $20 million wind tunnel and build it for $10 million,” Hart said. “We could have a groundbreaking in the spring and it could be done in a year.” He said the planning commission’s approval helps the project get one step closer to completion. Hart said he did not foresee any issues with the Federal Aviation Administration about the location of the wind tunnel building and believes it would be approved. When asked how the recently announced indoor skydiving facility planned for Liberty Twp. would impact the proposed Middletown facility.   25. Agreed! I packed one where it said "Skilled rigging experience needed" or similar and it was one of the worst packjobs of my life. I broke the loop multiple times, could not get the wrinkles out of it and it was as hard as a rock with no give at all when you would try to bend it. I have managed to avoid that rig ever again. Going softer makes them pack easier as well as prevents the bag from getting trapped in the container since its softer and can flex some.
