  1. Here is one that is going to turn out bad in the press: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/09/05/ohio-news-photographer-reportedly-shot-by-deputy-while-setting-up-to-take-pictures-traffic-stop.html Its not too far from me and I know some of the locals and they are saying the local police force does not have body cams. In this case the witness is reporting no warnings or engagement prior to being shot twice. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  2. Here is the counter argument to that - why should the 4 way take priority over someone that followed the process and manifested correctly? If the DZ really is that busy that there are no open slots it might be several loads before there is another open slot for someone to hop on a load. Why should the solo jumper that got in line, waited and paid for his slot have to be the one that gets kicked off and now has to wait potentially hours more to get a jump in? I've been there and I've said screw it just leave the DZ for the day and then don't come back for a while. If the very next plane had slots open on it I'd ask if the solo jumper would be willing to step off to get on the next plane and would work out something with them at that time but if the next few planes were full already then I'd be telling the 4 way team one of them is off the plane unless they want to comp the solo jumper for their error and the solo jumper is willing to get off. Part of being on a 4 way team is making sure that everyone is correctly briefed and ready to go for the jump. When I was training on 4 way I was told part of the video flyers responsibilities are typically to manifest the team as a whole on the planes that they want on so that the team can focus on their prep work like the dirt dive, getting some debriefing done or other things. If the team does not have a video flyer on the jump already then its not a serious enough 4way that they could not afford to scratch from the load and to properly load the plane. Would this be any different if instead of it being a 4 way team the question was "What would you do if someone forgot to manifest for a fun RW jump but they planed an entire dive with that person in it?" 6. This is one of the reasons I have a total of 15 jumps in the last 12 months. I used to be able to go to a DZ and get some great skydives in either with other jumpers that had similar goals or I would work with newer jumpers to do some basic 4 way organizing. In the last few years the trend locally has been to get as many of those newer jumpers in as coaches so they can start to pay for their own skydives and then make more skydivers. The downside is that you don't really learn any of the skills needed to do formations or other group jumps when you are chasing someone around with a gopro strapped to your head. The investment in the 2 hour drive each way to the DZ, sitting around for 3-4 hours to get a group together to do a good jump and then another 1-2 hours to get on a load are just not a good enough use of my time anymore... I figured out there is more to weekends than just sitting at DZ's ;) My last major trip to a local DZ involved sitting on the ground for 6 hours waiting on someone to decide they really wanted to pay for a skydive (students ended for the day basically then everyone would jump) and being told by a group of 4 that had a combined experience of less than 600 jumps (1 had 400) that they were going to plan it on the ride up and I could join them later in the day - I asked about dirt diving and they just laughed and said they didn't need to do that. I saw parts of their video after and it was a typical only 2-3 made it in and the fourth was either under spinning around looking at the formation or no where to be found.... I could have hopped on an end of the day tracking load with 14 people with experience from 28 jumps to 5000+, issue was looking at the load I knew 2/3's of them were not going to be part of the skydive for more than 10 seconds before they were out tracked and were then just lost. Those types of issues are on the LO - they were getting free slots so they would just throw everyone on the load and then would just track with the better flyers with everyone else left looking at the group 1/2 mile away at opening. The issue on the freefly side is that there are two general levels of abilities in freeflying. Fairly new - Sitflyers at this level can just do some campfire style jumps and that's about it. Putting to many of them at this skill level on a jump just leads to a game of chase the fastest faller and with a lot of backsliding occurring the entire skydives tend to be spent just keeping track of someone. Head down at this level is only really safe one on one with the zoominess and the corking that happens at that skill level. Most jumpers that can push someone through this level are actually at the next level. The other main level of skill is those that have done lots of investment in the tunnel / skydives to be able to do high quality jumps. This crowd tends to stick together to push their own skills and it leaves a lot of people that are in that middle ground with out too much else to do except to either spend the time and money at the tunnel or just find one or two others that have a similar desire to then just jump only with them. To be fair - when I was a newer jumper I did my share of campfire and stupidly planned jumps as well as a decent number of novelty jumps like Tubes, Rafts, etc. I was having a blast at it and left the DZ happy every weekend. After seeing some of the local jumpers that seemly got really good in a single season I eventually decided I wanted to get good at something myself and spent my time and effort working on a few skills instead of just burning a lot of holes in the sky. This meant for me not trying to do a tandem video, then a wingsuit then a few freefly and then back to a Wingsuit for the end of the day. Working on just one specific discipline and getting the finer details of it worked out helped things click for me. The big change for me was working with an RW organizer on a regular basis and then starting to get into a group that was working towards specific goals of things like 8 point 8 ways or 4 point 16 ways. Find some like minded jumpers and look at doing a 4 way team or a 2 way freefly team - jumping with the same consistent people every time is the best way to improve. Just randomly showing up on a random weekend is always a crapshoot in term of finding people to jump with that are at a skill level that can challenge you. 7. On of the larger factors I have experienced is currency also. I had access for a few months to a tunnel and was doing 30-60 minutes a week and went from barely able to hold onto the net to the point of being able to get lift and hold it off the net for 5-10 seconds. That took me probally 6-7 hours in 3 months to get to that phase and I was soooooo close to the break through to fly for a whole rotation in one spot but I lost access to a local tunnel because I stopped traveling for work. Now I can only swing by only once every 3-4 months for a single 15-20 minute block and I was right back at the looking like an idiot phase. I have 20-25 hours total over 12 years and probably 50% of that is time trying to learn head down but doing 15 minutes 4 times a year was just wasting money. Pop down for 15-20 hours and knock it out in about 8 weeks and its a good start. You should be able to be static and possibly taking a few docks at that point. If you are planning on doing carving and dynamic flight that seems to be in the 50-100 hour range from the few people I've spoken to - most are staff to get that type of time. Actually they called his name and he was not in the room so they kept moving down the list, he returned to the room and then did the thumbs down right in front of McConnell and then walked away. 10. I have a feeling that you are pretty close on that... If someone gets banned a dozen or more times and one of the rules to the site is that if you are banned and we see another account by you we will ban any further accounts why would you want to spend your time coming back? Its like a guest that shows up to your party - at first they are great and brought a case of beer so you are happy to have them around and like seeing them having fun, after a few events they ended up just causing some issues with other guests and you are forced to ask them not to come back. They started sneaking in to the party when the host was not around and when caught had to be asked to leave. Eventually the host just gets tired of asking them to leave and if they see them sneaking around at all they just shut the doors to lock that person out. What I don't get is why someone would want to keep coming back to a site that they have been told that they are not welcome at? Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  11. Ann has a net worth of about 8.5 Million, that's hardly enough to pay for a NetJets membership for a single person. Its about 150k-200K for 25 flight hours a year in a little Hawker for a membership card. I don't fly like I used to for work but I still have put up 50+ hours ( riding commercial and my total dollar spend has been about $5000. Her dollar spend would be closer to $350-500k at least and most likely it would be upwards of 650k+ just for the Hawker and doing a decent amount of travel since once you have the membership you tend to use it for every chance you can. I don't disagree at all that its a stupid argument with her. I have had my seat reassigned dozens of times - it happens when you do 100k miles a year mostly in 400 mile segments. You act like an adult and get over it about 30 seconds later. I have been downgraded from first class to coach a few times also - they usually make it up to the customers in the end if you ask nicely. 14. For Sport rigs I do it for $15 or $25 depending on bad they are. Quick dunk in a tub and about 10 minutes of rinsing - $15 for the wash and reassembly. If I have to get out the scrub brushes to get deep stains out then its $25. I typically will ask to wash rigs while AAD's are out for service since it takes a few extra days to hang and dry a rig and the rigs are usually down for the 2 weeks at that point. Are you looking at hand washing or machine washing the rigs? Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  15. The reason insurance companies are leaving the market place is due to the unpredictability in receiving payments from the government on the premiums they are owed. Trump has been floating the idea about just stopping the payments for those subsidies and I would not blame anyone for dropping a customer that starts walking around telling everyone that they just don't know if they want to keep paying their bills or not. 16. This is a de facto standard in a number of countries and it seems to work just fine. I think I'd maybe state it in different terms, but the basic concept remains the same. It shouldn't be a maximum wage, but rather a percentage range between highest and lowest paid employees (and contractors, let's please close THAT loophole). If a company wants to pay its CEO a quarter billion a year, fine. Just make sure they can also cover their lowest paid employees at say a 1:20th rate (just a ratio grabbed out of thin air, but you get the idea). If you really wanted to do that you also have to close off the stock gap that makes up such a large portion of Executive pay right now. Sure the CEO might only make 1.5 Million in his salary but he might also be granted 25,000 shares of restricted stock annually at a trading price of $80 so that's another 2 Million. Add in his ISO's and its easy to get a total comp package of 4-5 million a year. At a 20:1 ratio the lowest employee would need to make 75k if you count the 1.5M as his pay, if its the 5 million then its $250,000 It would be really easy for the executive team to reduce their salary to $500,000 ($25,000 at 20:1) and to get more stock instead and still get that 5 million per year. With the long term capital gains at 10% right now its actually way better to do it that way. Realistically it would be more likely to be more around 1000:1 if you really wanted to have congress ever look at it and that's only if Bernie would ever get serious traction. That would have an exec at a $20 million dollar a year cap while still paying wages that have a full time employee at min wage. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  17. There are several national level employers that offer benefits for warehouse positions on day one including Amazon but not every city has one of these warehouses in its backyard like there are of Walmarts. Most Walmart positions are not min wage either since they start at around $10 which is most than Min wage. Due to the last round of raises they claim their average hourly salary is $13.38 for full time and 10.58 for Part time. The insurance plan that they advertise for less than $25 a week also has a $4000 deductible. At Wal-mart average wages post tax you will bring home $809 biweekly post taxes and paying for the insurance so it only takes 10 -11 weeks of work to be able to pay off the deductible if you spend 100% of your take home to pay the bills. Walmart did a large round of raises in 2016 to boost the starting wages of all employees, previously they were starting at 7.50 ish and then you moved from there. As of 2016 they implemented a new policy to start full timers at $9 and then go to $10 when training is complete. Workers average .40 cent raises yearly but can get up to .60 a year on their performance reviews. Here in Ohio full time workers are eligible at those income levels for Medicaid for the first 1-2 years of their employment so Walmart does not have to cover them from a benefits standpoint and there are multiple news reports and stories out there of managers encouraging their employees to get the state/federal benefits rather than getting company ones. The ones that have to pay for those are the rest of the tax payers. Ohio's Medicaid limit is at 133% of the poverty level so Monthly income is defined as $1337 for a single person age 19-65, at the average Walmart wages you would make $1665 per month so it is over that limit but at a difference of $328 a month. If you have chronic health issues or know that you have medical expenses it actually pays to quit a higher wage job and find a job to get you under that income limit ($10.20 full time) and on Medicaid since you get a lot more benefits for being on Medicaid also. This is one of those things that are screwed up with our current systems today - the lowest earners are stuck in a cycle where if they do start to get ahead all it takes is one accident and they are wiped out due to the overwhelming expenses of the healthcare system. 18. To be an eligible employee you have to have been employed for at least one year and had to average at least 30 hours a week. For the first year of hire you are not eligible to enroll in the company benefit plan. Right from their handbook: If you are a part-time hourly or temporary associate, your initial eligibility for medical benefits is determined by a review of your average hours worked per week over the 52 consecutive weeks beginning on your hire date. This review applies to all part-time hourly and temporary associates, with the exception of part-time hourly pharmacists hired before February 1, 2012, and part-time truck drivers. If you average at least 30 hours a week (24 hours a week for part-time hourly pharmacists hired on or after February 1, 2012, and part-time field Logistics) over the 52-week review period without a break in employment greater than 13 weeks, you will become eligible for medical benefits. Specifically, your eligibility will begin on the first day of the calendar month that falls not less than one month and not more than two months after the end of the 52-week review period (i.e., on the first day of the second calendar month following the day before your one-year anniversary date). For example, if you are hired on April 15, 2016, the company will average the hours you work beginning April 15, 2016, through April 14, 2017. If you work an average of at least 30 hours a week over the review period, your coverage (if you enroll in a timely manner) would begin June 1, 2017. Initial medical coverage for associates who work an average of at least 30 hours a week over the 52-week review period will continue through the end of the second calendar year following date of hire. In the example above, your coverage (if you enroll in a timely manner) would continue through the end of 2018. In this case if you get hired on April 12th you actually have almost 13.5 months before you are eligible to enroll. April - April is the 52 weeks and then you become enrolled on June 1st. This means that all the recyclable materials that go into a panel can be removed from that figure in the future as facilities come online to recycle solar panels. Companies have found it is extremely profitable to recycle used electronics like computers, circuit boards and similar while they contain some of the same toxic materials. As supplies of retired solar panels start to reach a critical point where owners are looking to dispose of them in large numbers I am sure that more recycling facilities will be coming online to take advantage of this. In fact the industry has already created processes where 96% of all waste is recaptured for some panels https://www.pv-tech.org/news/pv-cycle-achieves-record-96-recycle-rate-for-silicon-based-pv-modules Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  20. Billy, that screwed up schedule was for someone that was a grocery store department manager with 10 years experience including 5 as a department manager, not a fresh 16 year old at his first job but instead a 30 year old with an apartment and loan payments. This type of schedule is very rampant in the retail industry. Despite all the hype about going to college or a trade school and scoring a 100k a year job there is still a large portion of the population that is not appropriate for those type of jobs and we still need someone to run the registers, stock the shelves, clean the bathrooms, and do the majority of the retail type positions out there. Look at the current employment stats: https://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat18b.htm 151,436,000 total workers in the US with a median age of 42.2 16,577,100 in retail. Median age is 37.9 Retail job salaries: https://www.job-applications.com/retail-jobs/retail-salaries https://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes412031.htm Most are not considered entry level since they are not min wage and tend to average around $12-13 an hour. That is over Minimum wage by a fair amount but the schedule tends to be the larger issue in terms of being able to move ahead in the world. Its impossible to go to school unless you have some regularity in your life to be able to afford a roof over your head and the rest of the necessities in the modern world. I know Starbucks was taking a lot of bad press a few years back about this since there was a few news articles written how their staff were getting 40 hours pay and benefits but they actually had to be at the location 2-3 different times a day and most times their day would start at 5 AM to open and not wrap up until 10 pm when they closed but they were only technically on the clock for 8 of those hours. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  21. One of the issues with the majority of minimum wage jobs is the scheduling aspect of it. Many employers use flexible scheduling where someone may be a "Clopener" where they open the store in the morning say an 7-11 shift and then also have to close the store so they are brought back at a 5-9 shift. The employee is getting 8 hours a day but if they are trying to use public transit or have child care needs it is nearly impossible to be able to find affordable child care that can deal with this type of a schedule. Coffee shops and similar establishments tend to use this type of scheduling since they need full staff at the morning and evening rushes but do not need full staff at 2 pm. A second issue is the "block scheduling" or "on demand scheduling" aspect. In this area the employee is expected to be on call and report to work to start their shift when the demand for the day starts picking up. Restaurants are really bad about this since they will tell their staff to be ready to come in but if customers do not show up they don't need to show since there is no need to have 10 people standing around doing nothing and having to pay them to stand there. This is hell trying to find reliable last minute transportation if you are on minimum wage or do not live close to your job. Its even worse if you have child care issues that need to be considered since you don't know if you need to report in at 3 or wait until 5 today and might not find out until 2:45. I have family in this situation that they would be sitting around and get the phone call asking them to show up early or late any given day due to the demands of that day. Some times they would add up the hours at the end of the week and find out they were only getting 30 hours since demand was slow that week and they were not needed much and were told to come in late. Flip side of that is the sending people home early part. Back in school I used to love getting sent home early from my min wage job since I really did not want to be there and it was really only gas and date money for me but if I was trying to make a living and my manager just started cutting my hours on a random basis it would be a massive impact to my finances. Last issue around scheduling is the tendency for some employers to have unstable schedules. I saw the schedule of another family member for is a low level store manager making around $14 and its something stupid like this: Week 1 Sunday Off Monday 7-4, Tuesday Off Wednesday 7-4, Thursday 11-8, Friday 6-3 Saturday 3-9 Week 2 Sunday 8-5 Monday Off Tuesday 11-8 Wednesday 11-8 Thursday Off Friday 7-3 Saturday 6-3 Computers now create the schedule and take lots of variables into account such as customer traffic patterns, historical demands, sale events, skill levels of employees but its rare to see these automated staff scheduling applications also take into account the needs for the person to arrange for child care or transportation with such an erratic schedule. Just trying to arrange childcare with that schedule would be a nightmare if you could even find a single program that could it. Employers do not really care since they are trying to be profitable and spend only what they need to on staffing which is what they need to do so they remain in business. Raising the min wage for an employee in this situation is not going to help them as much as creating a more predictable work schedule. Here is a good write up from a few years back that showed that potentially 17+% of the total US workforce was in this irregular scheduling bubble and it tended to effect 45% of those making less than $22k a year. http://www.epi.org/publication/irregular-work-scheduling-and-its-consequences/ When you look at some of the situations and thresholds for SSI, Food Stamps, etc there is a very thin edge where you can actually work, get ahead and start to make a better life before you end up having the assistance pulled out from under you and now you are not making enough to actually get ahead at all and its easier for you to just quit working and ask for assistance again. I am not a big fan of having people being on assistance permanently but at the same point I think they we need to be creating programs Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
