  1. Part of the driver to develop LED's was due to government changes - specifically the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. This required that lightbulbs produce the same light output but were required to use 20-30% less power to be sold in the US. This basically kick started the large drive towards CFL's at the time. CFL's had a large power savings but were ugly in their designs, they tended to only be in the cool white color and had lots of toxins associated with it. As lighting companies were trying to find more options to meet this new regulation a lot of them started to settle on LED's since the were lots cheaper to work with, had fewer toxins and had the option to shift the colors to the warm light that was closer to the old style they were replacing. They also started to be delivered in ways that were just not possible like the strip lighting that has became really popular in a lot of applications. Once the price of LED's started coming down some the industry basically dropped CFL's and started only using LED's. Lets not forget that a lot of people resisted the driver to be more energy efficient by introducing the Better Use of Light Bulbs Act and the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act both of which failed to get enabled. Had they passed they would have killed the driver to create these technologies. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  2. I work for a commercial electrical contractor, yes LED is now the standard. Besides the low draw you're able to downsize many of the components within the system to include wiring, breakers, etc, etc and it allows much more direct control of the system with such things as dimming, occupancy sensors, and daylight sensors in perimeter space. Basically, it's way beyond feel-good environmental stuff. This is what I was most impressed with when we redid our basement. A 15 amp circuit is good for about 1800 watts and with you planning for about 80% of that you are limited to about no more than 1400 watts per circuit. That really means about 10 lights (100 watt each) at max since you figure an outlet or two on the same circuit you are approaching max. With the LED's only costing you 14 watts each you could get 70 lights per circuit or so to get to the same max loading. 200 amp panels are now total overkill for a home and you can run as many lights as you would want almost. 12 gauge wire is not needed as much either since there are fewer 20 amp circuits needing to be ran for the lights so you can run cheaper 14 gauge wires. 3. Some DZ's have certain niches for their attitudes. Some are fun jumper focused where they do a lot of low skill level organizing, camps and other activities that are focused on keeping their fun jumpers coming back all the time. Other DZ's do a lot to promote a social scene where they try to throw big parties all the time. Some DZ's have a large focus pumping out as many tandems as possible. There is another DZ that is demo jumping focused where the majority of their experienced jumpers want to get on a high profile demo team. The issue is the social scene in a lot of these is driven by the manager/DZO. If they are wanting to bring in a lot of cash they focus on Tandems/AFF, if they are in it for fun they end up having a lot of parties, if they are just doing it to get their own fun jumps then the DZ tends to get focused on the fun jumping aspects. I can advise to get out and see lots of other DZ's - just since a DZ has the largest planes in the area does not mean its the best fit for you. 7. Their previous largest contract was 1.4 million dollars on a contract that they just won and have not even completed yet. John, the photos you see of all the trucks are because the power utilities share resources and in essence loan out the linemen for free. This is done with the understanding that if events require it other utilities will lend assistance to help them in their time of need. Midwest companies send south for the hurricanes and the southern companies send north to help out in the winter ice storms. This lending is still occurring with PR but this contract is to basically recreate most of the lines and grid. This is not just a "install a 100 poles and restring the wires job" that can be done in a few days or a week - this is a massive project that will require thousands of skill workers and all the back office things like HR, Payroll, accounting, IT, etc. That is not something that is typically a spin up as you need it function. 8. Don't forget to include this one in the list: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/10/19/correction-veteran-glass-artist-falsified-his-military-record.html On Sunday, Oct. 8, Fox News Channel aired a story about John Garofalo, a glass artist who created a presidential glass seal in the hopes of gifting it to President Trump. Garofalo claimed he was a Vietnam veteran, a member of the first U.S. Navy SEAL team, and a decorated war hero who was awarded two Purple Hearts. Unfortunately, all of Garofalo's claims turned out to be untrue. The fact is that he did not serve in Vietnam. He was never a U.S. Navy SEAL. Even though he showed us medals, Garofalo was not awarded two Purple Hearts or any of the other nearly two dozen commendations he claimed to have received, except for the National Defense Service Medal. It is true that Garafalo is a glass artist and a veteran. He served in Spain and he gifted two presidential seals to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Over the last two weeks, we've worked with Garofalo's family and the National Personnel Records Center to get to the bottom of a military past that Garofalo had claimed to be covert. We apologize to our viewers, especially veterans and servicemen and women. This was after they did enough work to create the story, paid the travel to send out a national reporter and gave the story a prime time slot on their Sunday programming. Other vets pointed out the errors but they seem to have left it online for days to continue to get social media likes and shares anyways https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-navy/2017/10/19/faker-man-admits-he-lied-to-fox-news-about-navy-seal-service/ Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  9. Agreed, my local district has had a total of 4 years of democrats elected in the last 65 years. The district last went to the Republicans in 2012 by a vote count of 205,277 to 128,188. Thats roughly 62% to 38%. In the presidential election before that the vote count was 139,584 Democrat to 137,272 Republican (single term win for the Democrats). Guess what happened in 2010? State districts were re drawn and they managed to basically take a lot of highly republican areas and throw them into the district. They peeled some of the more urban areas out and put them into a district that is now 70% democrat and 30% republican. Why show up and vote if your voice is not going to be heard? Here are some points on that matter: In 2016, when the average margin of victory for Ohio's 16 races was 36.3 points, the closest race wasn't close at all, decided by 18.4 points. In 2014, the closest race was 20.3 points, while three-quarters of the races were decided by 30 points or more. In 2012, there were two close races - decided by 4.1 points and 6.5 points. This was the last time races have been decided by single-digits. No seat has changed party hands since 2012 - the first election with the current maps - with the GOP winning the same 12 seats and Democrats winning the same four seats in each of the last three elections. The maps don't reflect the political makeup of the state. Republicans in the last three elections have claimed 75 percent of the U.S. House races while winning 56 percent of the overall vote. 10. As a gun owner I feel there are still some things that could be done to address some of the issues in gun related accidents. One that I would like to see is that if children under 10 are living in the home the gun owner is required to secure all guns via a storage safe or trigger lock. Failure to do so is punishable via fines or jail time. Multiple repeat offenses would be subject to forfeiture of the guns and placed on the do not sell list. It's not going to be a primary offense that could trigger a search warrent to see if someone is in compliance but as a secondary charge similar to how the police here can not pull you over for texting and driving but can pull you over for leaving your lane and then add the texting charge on to increase the punishment. Lots of the stupid things like the micro tags, case impressions, rifleing impressions and other items are pointless in terms of preventing or at least curtailing the easiest to prevent type of gun related accidents. 12. Ohio is as bad if not worse. I've seen contracts get issued for work that is knowingly never going to be completed. Its not because of an intent to commit fraud but because of a desire to keep their own job. With most civilian jobs if the job is not completed on time then extensions can be granted but usually rates and total amount of expenditure is discussed and agreed on. My house needs a new roof and more damage is discovered during the tear down and now its going to cost an extra $5000? Ok - we can agree to the new cost and the work gets completed. With the state the issue is that the budget get approved yearly via the house so if they really want a new bridge in their district the rep makes sure they steer funding for that project, the issue is that if there is a cost overrun the contractor is not really constrained by a need to come back and reach a middle ground on price. They already tore out the old bridge and adding another 1-2 million on to the cost is just rounding of the dollars because there is no way that a constituent is going to be ok with letting the bridge be out for another 12 months while the next round of budgeting is approved only to never get that bridge completed. This is big when elections change the shape of a budget since a project that needed 1-2 years planning and prep time for the designs, traffic studies, engineering work and other items suddenly is no longer a priority since Rep X lost and now Rep Y wants the money for his own pet projects. Due to government purchasing requirements for things like minority owned, veteran owned, American made, woman owned, and being on the approved purchasing schedule it provides a lot of additional overhead to those suppliers to have to increase their prices to justify dealing with the government. I've been directly involved in getting some items put on the GA70 schedule and it took a team of 10-12 over 13 months of work to just get a few products approved for sale to the US government. That was not for actual purchasing but just to be eligible for contractors to include in their projects as an authorized solution that could be potentially purchased at some point in the future. This same thing exists at every state level. The goal behind this is to make sure that its not a fly by night operation with no financial solvency, that the item being sold does what is claims to do and that all the required items like proof of insurance, citizenship requirements and everything else is done up front. This is why the point about approved items like the Mac Book referenced in the article have a higher cost to the government than they do if you go to Best Buy - Best Buy does not have to do a years worth of paperwork to get approved and maintain that status and certification to be able to sell to the government. 13. The whole stunt with Mike Pence cost us as taxpayers quite a lot of money. He was originally in Las Vegas to start the day so they flew Air Force 2 from Vegas to Indy with the full crew, all the Secret Service and the needed military components (multiple C5's worth of gear) all the way across the country and then told the Press pool following him to stay in the van since they knew he was not going to be there that long. He had dinner meetings in Las Angeles that evening so he actually had a very short window to get back to the airport and fly all the way back across the country to get to his scheduled meetings. The whole thing was a publicity stunt to drive up attention for his base and to distract from the other things going on right now. There was another round of white supremacy rally's in VA over the weekend, Donald Jr got into an twitter fight over the late night shows taking cracks at his dad, President Trump was attacking GOP senators on twitter and they responded by calling the White House and "Adult Day Care center", North Korea is said to be prepping a launch of a long range missile showcasing distance and not altitude working on reentry accuracy, Puerto Rico is still a disaster, a Hurricane was making landfall in the Gulf, news reports were coming out that Trumps overseas golf courses in Scotland lost 25 million last year and were getting close to bankruptcy, and this was a really great distraction from the other negative things that could have been in the headlines. One thing the Trump administration does very well is control what the top story is going to be at almost all times, any time that it starts to go off plan they create a new story or crisis to push to distract from the other issues. Its basically running from one crisis to the next so that people forget about the original crisis. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

The 15's I am pretty spent at the end of but the 10's at flying 2 minute rotations are ok. Flying them at 1:30 or 1:40 is better for debriefing. If you are in shape you can look at 10 minutes, if not grab 5 minutes and see how you feel then grab another 5 minutes an hour or two later. 15. I've seen this system as well as another version where the jumper has a "loop" that runs to an extra attachment point on their canopy and they "raise" the flag by pulling on the loop after it opens. The first option takes a large canopy already and adds the entire flag's bulk to the packjob also. Think of a 210 canopy packing like a 320 or so depending on the type and size of the flag. The second option requires lots of rigging to keep the lines correct for opening and then under canopy you have to attach the flag to the lines. This involves a lot in in air rigging with the possibility of dropping the flag, hooking it up wrong or a dozen other bad situations. Neither of these are situations I would want to do on a regular basis. The Foot on the bottom and attach the top to a riser works well for some flags. The only limit here is that unless you properly account for it it can be hard to run out a landing if you have it too short. The drop flag method works best since it can be ditched with out interfering with the rest of the gear if needed. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  16. Its pretty simple math - getting a legitimate full auto M16 or similar would have ran the purchaser about $12-15,000 for the purchase. A AR with a SureFire will be maybe $1000-2000. Once it came out that the shooter had dozens of guns in his possession the math was putting the shooter at either having spent a few hundred thousand dollars (upwards of $400000 for guns, ammo, optics, etc ) or less than $40000 with ammo and optics. This was before it was known that the shooter was a multimillionaire that could have afforded full auto if he really wanted them. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
  17. Here is a similar blog on PD's laser table. http://blog.performancedesigns.com/pds-laser-tables/ Its interesting to see who uses which type of cutter on their canopies. Not sure the speed difference but based on experience both seem to do the job very well. PD uses the laser to do a dot system instead of using a marker like Strong does for panel markings. 18. The rate of fire seemed more like that of a AR fitted with a bump stock. That would have been about 15 minutes work to fit to any AR that you have laying around and that would boost the rate of fire to 500+ rounds a minute. None of that would run afoul of any current restrictions either. Combo that with a 50 round drum and its about 15 seconds worth of fire per drum. Just curious I went out and looked at a few of the bump fire retailers and they are all sold out as of today. Lots of people trying to snatch one up in case there are any restrictions coming down in the future on them.... Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

  22. I know anything that I end up getting in a tax cut will not be spent for another 20-30 years since I will be putting all of it into a retirement plan. This is going to be the case for a large portion of the middle upper class, they will be using any savings for retirement savings, paying down home loans or similar debt elimination. Looking at our corporate plans even with a massive tax reduction there are no major plans for expansion via hiring so it's likely that any savings will be put into building up a larger cash reserve than we currently have to deal with future acquisitions and dividends. Not sure how that will help spur any lower or middle class growth. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

I am sure that Boeing and Airbus can just magically found someone else to step up and buy 200+ aircraft and keep their employees employed once those contracts get canceled . Boeing puts the number of direct and indirect jobs at 100,000 that are at risk if the deal is scrapped. Those are not min wage jobs but jobs starting at $50k.
