  1. My memory is that the Basik has upper corner features that are specifically designed to overlap the corners and retain the free bag. Perhaps it retains it just enough, or perhaps it retains it too much? Hopefully those with first hand knowledge can say it is good. It seems that there is a general acceptance that among rigs where the problem is perceived to exist, the larger sizes are less affected. 2. CARRIER Specific sensitivity? ... sounds familiar. Ok, I'll bite. WTF is a "buried cellphone tower"? This "electrosensitivity" is like the Breaking bad spinoff - Better Call Saul! 3. I agree, that is why I don't use rubberbands for the critical locking stows. The non-locking stows breaking isn't a big deal, but the canopy dump from broken locking stows is. Something much less likely to break is better such as tube stows. I'm not familiar with the "locking" method of the stowless bags. Are they not vulnerable to failure? 5. My oldest replica gave me the most wonderful Father's Day present, a book about the history of the artwork for Rush. It is a fabulous book, the cheapest version of it costs $99, so I would never have bought it for myself. The pages are the thickest I've even encountered, the hardcover feels like it has a soft rubber coating. I've read a good portion of it already, and it does reveal lots of interesting details about the history of their music and development of their artwork. I was born in '62, they've been my favorite since their 2nd release, the Fly by Night Album. It seems to not be available on amazon. You can read more about it here: http://www.rush.com/the-art-of-rush/ People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 10. It is completely wrong to let others convince you that you will not be happy staying with a 210 sized main or bigger. Your choice of words like "so I can use that for a while" imply that it is inevitable that you'd want to go even smaller than a 190. Don't fall for that way of thinking. Perhaps you will come to that conclusion on your own, but don't let others make that decision for you. Plenty of wise, very experienced jumpers stick to a WL that you would have under a 210. Plenty of wise, very experienced jumpers can walk without a limp after decades of jumping. Having a low WL contributes to that, at least I think it has in my case. Making a nice easy stand up landing without drama is plenty exciting for me. 11. The fabric is said to have 16% less bulk, but that doesn't mean the canopy as a whole should be expected to be that much less. The reinforcement tapes, lines and such are the same volume as before. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 12. I think the Pilot has some great characteristics that many experienced jumpers value. The factory brake length is definitely too long. After shortening them a few inches, and grabbing the top of the toggle to flare, the flare is really nice IMO. Some imply that the flatter flying canopies like the Pilot don't have the flare power to "pop up" like the steeper trimmed wings such as the Sabre II. I have only flown a very small number of modern canopies (much greater number of different ancient canopies), but I can get my Pilot to pop up nicely even with my low WL. Aerohio in just the last few weeks has been flying a Kodiak: http://aerohio.com/licensed-jumpers/view-our-planes-and-facilities Very nice plane, definitely the youngest plane I've ever flown in or jumped from. 17. i would predict that instructors would prefer you not wear foam type earplugs for student jumps, but the "filtering" type of plugs (is that what you mean by "custom"?) would I think be more likely to be accepted. Be sure to discuss this with them early in the training. Many of the filtering type of earplugs stick out quite a lot, so they don't work well with helmets. The link below shows a type that are low profile and somewhat popular as shown in the thread. I also have tinnitus and don't want it to get worse. I also think concentrating is easier when not bombarded by such high noise levels. Large commercial planes are very quiet compared to what you'll be flying in for a jump. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4083263#4083263 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 19. are you saying its hard to put on a rig with out b12 buckles? I've seen so many people NOT hang the rig down to their elbows when putting legs through. Either stepping into it on the ground or having the rig all the way up on their shoulders when getting legs through - either of those ways looks so awful compared to just hanging it down to the elbows, I don't understand it. 20. 1) Go with the collapsible PC, no real controversy there. Even a 190 main will benefit enough to warrant going that way. 2) If you do a search you'll find that some think the optimum opens a bit slower than others. 3) There are many threads about soft vs metal handles, so there is no need I think to starting a new discussion without checking those out first. There are alternative metal handles that I think are worth considering: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4656277#4656277 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 21. Was one side chopped, held together by a cross connector? It looked like there was something slightly wrong with the canopy, but not enough to warrant chopping from low altitude. When I was a noob, an experienced guy pointed out to me how the sliding mechanism on my capewells were a loose fit or something like that. The looseness results in a much higher force required to operate the mechanism. It could be very easy for something like that to contribute to an incident like this, regardless if it was relevant to this particular case. The guy adjusted the capewells I believe by tightening up the rivet style pivot (That is my memory, perhaps all wrong). We are fortunate that now we have greater resources to learn about such failure modes with the help of forums such as this. It seems that it would have been better to just put out the reserve without chopping, whether the reserve has a pilot chute or not. 22. Whether sewing in bulk to the container or d-bag, be real careful to not add snag point where lines could get caught under a corner. 23. I don't think math works the way you think it does. "Come on man math," back at you. If the slope is the horiz/vert distance, then a value of 2 is given by an angle of less than 27 degrees. Slope is normally vert/horiz, but I think it is considered differently for this context. 24. Is it called something different if a person uses a docile skydiving canopy? Why should ground launching be assumed to lead to speed flying? From how you describe it, it is implied that a person would naturally want to go fast, similar to how it is often assumed that a skydiver will want to get to a high wingload in a hurry. After all, what kind of a strange person would be happy with a 1.0 or 1.1 wingload? I'll tell you what kind, a person that likes to be able to walk without a limp after many decades of jumping, and a person that likes to be able to easily land in small spaces when the spot is lousy. Isn't it enough that ground launching can allow someone to get comfortable with the handling of and practice landings under the same type and size of canopy they use for skydiving? Perhaps you don't mean to imply what I have perceived. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 25. Ripcord pins are made from .188 dia 302SS Cond A (303 is also allowed but I don't use it) they are then rotary swaged to a diameter of .094 using the rotary Swag process of cold forming as you can't harden SS with Heat treat. The overall length of the blade is dictated by the end user but is usually 1.25 inches. Column strength of the blade is tested by inserting it into an .096 dia hole one half inch deep and applying an 8 pound weight to the end. The results is checked in a go-no go gage of .104 dia to the full depth and the pin must fall out without friction after insertion. This process and design was originally for a pin and metal cone thru a 9/16 and 7/16 grommet situation. The amount of allowable bend was critical as the thru hole in the cone was about a half inch deep/thick. Today we use 1/4 inch grommets with a cloth loop. A far less critical arrangement. Yes, the pin can bend in that configuration but it is usually from dropping or throwing the rig down or against something as the rig is compressed when it hits something and this causes the rest of the rig to want to expand causing a great load on the loop and subsequently on the pin causing a bent pin. The good news is that is can still be pulled even with a bend. The Military still uses this pin on their center pull chest reserve with cloth loops and even with the rough treatment they get have had no problem. Larger diameter pins would cause a harder pull with the same loop load. Additionally, the shank and cable would also have to be enlarged to obtain the necessary strength as the blade would still have to be cold formed to make it hard enough. The thicker pins used on some assemblies have no greater column strength as they are not cold formed from a larger diameter. Don't let size fool you. Column strength? That sounds like buckling to me, and that is not the type of stress to which the pin is subjected. Still haven't had a reply to the challenge of his assertion cold forming is better than the 8x greater strength from the beginning diameter. Here's another account of a slight bend being very bad: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4715831#4715831 People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired.
