  1. My guess it that makes sense for the military versions, where they can be re-set/adjusted for many different conditions/change in mission plans/destination while in flight. At least that is my memory from years ago when I read a bit about such mil-versions. You'd want to have easier access to the controls. Just a guess, as normally more exposed also means more likely to get abuse and damaged. 3. ...when you mention jumping a twin beech and the young'uns start talking about how they'd love to hit the sand barefoot. 4. If the problem was a locked brake on one side, I think I'd take enough wraps on the other side to simulate that one also being stowed. That would put the canopy in an even/symmetric stowed configuration. From that situation, flaring a low WL canopy with rears is not very scary because pulling on rears will also pull the steering lines along with it. The flare should be fairly effective and predictable. If the steering lines were broken, that makes the rears so much less effective I think that I'd be much less likely to stay with it. More likely to not be effective and predictable. Even those that land on rears regularly, which is definitely not me, do it with the steering lines still attached. 5. when...you would naturally use the term "RW", but have to stop yourself so as not to confuse the young'uns... 6. It looks like it is designed to create a snag hazard. It looks like the release wire would be inside the helmet. How does it release from an overload? 7. The bartack SB was for the swift plus 7 cell I believe, not the 5 cell. My memory is that the 5 cell swift had an unusual SB regarding the airfoil shape due to badly cut ribs. 8. Of course that makes you more comfortable. Sometime you may encounter a security agent that wants you to open both the main and reserve. It may not matter what "letter" you show them that says they shouldn't require it, they can demand it, or they can decide that it simply isn't allowed for carry on because they have the power to do so. Anyone traveling with a rig should be prepared to have it go as checked luggage. 9. This is true as currently configured. However, the idea of a fabric/cording ripcord has been around since the 80's. The Handbury Rig used a Dacron ripcord going to two pull-out pins ( the reserve container was a 2-pin similar to the original Wonderhog ). The current UPT design is patented so one must enter into a licensing agreement to use their design. Jerry Baumchen I would very much like to be able to use the beefier pin instead of what I consider to be pathetically weak (too easy to bend) standard ripcord pin. If that means that using a spectra or whatever material "cable" would be the way to make that possible (to be able to attach to the UPT pin), I'd do it for sure, even if it meant having to watch out for wear or UV damage and replace it every few years or whatever. I don't expect Velocity Sports to be too interested in allowing such a non-standard setup on my rig. Maybe it would be worth asking? What do you think? I also don't expect that a master rigger would think they can adapt it, do you agree? 10. I think it may have been limited to the rigs when Dan T. was making them. I don't remember any of the Northern Lite rigs Larry Chernis made having them, so probably gone well before Kelly F. took over from Larry. It may have still been an option with Larry but few taking it. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 11. What do you mean? The 4 doesn't relate to a series, the first number after the "I" is the reserve size. 12. Please clarify - why would an open riser cover result in a wrap or cause the need to cutaway? I did some head down back when riser covers did not exist at all. 13. That is great, a valuable skill... You mentioned being apprehensive about landing crosswind or downwind. It won't be so easy to stand up a landing because you'll have movement sideways (crosswind) or extra speed (downwind). You should also talk to your instructors about another aspect of what it might take to avoid obstacles - using deep brakes on approach. The altitude drop that the surge back to full glide takes can be surprising and will hurt (or kill) if you get it wrong. That kind of landing is sometimes done by some tandem instructors to get a little bit of extra speed. When going back to full glide, the speed at which the toggles are raised is also critical to how the canopy will or won't excessively surge. Done poorly, you get hurt. Done well, and if you anticipate how much more forward glide you'll get, it can help with accuracy if you're going to overshoot otherwise. Also, there is a risk of conflict with other canopies around/behind/above you, as they may not expect this, so there are plenty of things to consider. There may come a day when an off landing forces you to land in such a small area that you can't do a full glide landing, and you can't just turn to avoid an obstacle. Being able to sink a canopy in a way somewhat similar to real accuracy competitors (youtube videos should be helpful to see examples) can be a valuable capability/skill (landing in relatively deep brakes with little or no final flare). Such a landing done on a largish sport canopy would of course mean a vertical speed greater than that with a proper accuracy canopy - meaning you better be prepared to PLF. I choose to jump a canopy big enough that I feel comfortable with it. Find someone that knows real accuracy technique like this. It may not be your instructor, more likely someone old. Just realize that these techniques can save you, and they can kill you. Learn about them so you have a better chance of doing them correctly when needed. 15. Perhaps there is a middle-ground somewhere between suggestions of actually looking all the way out at the horizon vs looking straight down. Maybe looking out at where you are likely to actually land after a bit of plane-out is better. 16. Most people would expect a non-ZP main to still perform well after 100 jumps, why is it that a reserve might fail after so few pack jobs. I've read that handling that the handling of the fabric during the pack job is what increases the permeability more than a jump, but a main would of course would have both. It would be interesting to know how the permeability of a typical PD main (non-ZP) would be at various jump numbers. Of course the old mains would not fly so well after a few - several hundred jumps, so I can't help but wonder how they would fare on the test at 100, 200, 400 jumps. 17. In case the OP is determined to get a Swift Plus, here is the info on their sizes, as there has been lots of discussion about how the labels don't clearly specify the size, and whether there is a 200 sq.ft. version (there is not, the 200 on the label for the 175 version is max wt. recommendation). Part Number break down is as follows: Swift Plus 145, PN 828100-0, SN prefix R8- Swift Plus 175, PN 827400-0, SN prefix R6- Swift Plus 225, PN 828000-0, SN prefix R7- More info: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4294992#4294992 I've had a ride on a 175 and 225 version, both opened and landed very well. 19. Kapowsin is my home DZ. It's very kid and dog friendly, but no climbing walls or regularly scheduled barbecues. There is a fenced dog run and a play ground for the kids. We also have a Super Otter, Super Caravan, and Porter at your beck and call for making all the jumps you want. There's a bunkhouse minutes from the DZ. Also a Super 8 motel and shopping just down the road. So many great memories of the old Kapowsin...I will get back there to play again. Hopefully this coming summer. My rig deserves to get back to its spawning grounds, or at least pretty close to it. 20. I do so wish all my gear, clothes, shoes, everything added up to just 20 pounds. I would not expect the Storm to be a more docile canopy at the same WL compared to a Sil. I think there might be a little bias or something going on to make their loading chart give that impression. 21. Was it a really good price compared to others? It would have to be a great deal to be willing to wait at all, meaning that I'd expect it to be in stock and be shipped right away. No way would I have been willing to wait even 2 weeks for a helmet. Your credit card should reimburse you without too much hassle unless laws over there are different. 23. The floating laterals of the VSE Infinity are unique I believe. There are other features that are also very well executed and innovative. Of course I think the Infinity is best, as I made the decision to buy a couple of them. 24. I'd bet a lot of people have landed with this condition and didn't notice it. Even if the PC was fully inflated, I would expect the canopy to fly with only minor change. Maybe if it was a super tiny canopy it could cause real trouble. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. 25. Thread resurrection! Ha! I'd completely forgotten that I had heard about the Chroma. I was interested in the other thread about Elemental's other product, the Ion and saw that Chutingstar is selling it...pretty bad that I forgot... The preselected altitudes are just fine with me, keep it simple and the price low. Probably better reliability also with no buttons. It would be a supplement to an audible. Many people have more than one audible, and I think the Chroma and an audible are at least as good if not better than 2 audibles. Maybe to be put on the birthday or Christmas wish list.
