I walked it in 1980 while living in Urubamba 3 months. Took 5 days due to rains on day 3. Carried our own gear and food, was a tough haul at those altitudes. In those 5 days, maybe a total of 7 people were walking it. Now you can only do the trail with guides. Trail is limited to 500 permits PER DAY. That is counting the tour guides and guys carrying your gear, setting up tents, cooking the meals etc, who make up 300 of the 500 permitted! http://www.andeantravelweb.com/peru/treks/incatrail_regulations.html Machu Picchu is truly wonderful. But the famed 'Inca Trail' itself only has 2 sites to see. The best and gorgeous and mysterious is Wiñay Wayna definitely a must see, but that is only a half hour walk from Machu Picchu. The actual inca trail stretches from chile to ecuador. Its a wonderful park. There are a few quick hikes from visitor centers where you can get really close to the Mountain Goats, truly wonderful critters! But there are some mean-ass bears in that park! As mentioned, the main road is closed until snow melts mid summer, but you can enter the park from several roads. Reasonable places to stay just outside the park...and if you do go to Missoula its a nice college town. There are many natural hot springs that are very easy to find from the roads and along snake river just over the border in Idaho. Lalo Hot Springs is only 35 miles from Missoula and has nice cheap cabins and infrastructure. You'll have fun! "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

come on now, why even bother? Hiassen is a gas to read, I picked up his latest 'Nature Girl' at the airport and read half on the plane ride. Not really a series but there are a few recurring characters across them. Asimov was mentioned a few times, but no one listed his Robot stories and novels that were the basis for the Will Smith movie I Robot. A bunch of my friends went to see Tull at RedRocks back in 1971 or so! There was a riot....people trying to get in for free created such a confusion that the cops broke it up with teargas! I travel Mon-Thurs. Stay home 4 nites/3 days a week. Sometimes you might be able to work from home, or be 'on the bench' at home.... If I had kids I wouldn't do it. What's the point of having kids if you can't be with them? But if you need the money to raise your family, that's another story.....and as others mention, your wife needs to be independent and sign on 100% to your traveling. I don't get it....insure yourself for exactly what occurrences in the tunnel? Sore muscles? Too much fun?
