And yet his support keeps growing. Among the section of the US population that forms the base support of the Republican Party Trump's positions are popular. Not universally, but in the minds of significant numbers of them.

I'm reasonably certain that he cannot attain the support of an absolute majority of Republicans. But I don't know all the intricacies of the primary and nomination process. Is it possible to gain the nomination with the solid support of about a third of the party? Because he seems to have reached that level.

Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

That's the "million dollar" question, isn't it?

The scary part is that it seems to be very possible. One of the bigger criticisms of the primary system is that, often, "middle of the road" voters won't bother to vote in the "lesser" elections. So the only ones voting in the primary elections are the extremists.

Also, some states require a declared party affiliation to vote in a primary. Which means that the independents and undeclareds (I've never declared a party affiliation, although I tend to vote conservative - mostly "R").
Which again, leads towards weighting the vote towards the extremists.

Kind of like how Obama seems to have brought all the racists out of hiding, Trump seems to be doing the same. Albeit in the opposite way (opposition to Obama vs support for Trump).

Seriously though, he will be our next Prez. A couple of things to consider:

Low education voters: People know his name.
Our current politicians: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Trump is different.
Political Correctness: He doesn't have it. He is saying out loud what a lot of people think in private. The more he says the more media he gets, and when you are an entertainer, there is no such thing as bad media.

And has he even had to dip into his own money yet with all the free press?

Don't get me wrong, I hope someone else gets the nominee because in all honesty, I don't trust the guy. He comes off like a snake oil salesman. But with our current politicians sucking so badly the best way to describe him would be a "market correction."

Anyone else got a better way to describe the Trump phenomena?

I agree; it's getting more and more likely.

And we may need this. We may need to make a mistake of that caliber to get people more involved in our government. We may need to let the disaster that would be a Trump presidency happen so that next time around, people do not put up with the sort of idiocracy that creates the popular candidates we see today.

I'm pretty sure that a Trump nomination would pretty much guarantee another Clinton Presidency. Even with a good Republican nominee she is going to be hard to beat. Against Trump she would attract at least some people who would otherwise vote Republican, and Trump will not draw any crossover voters at all.

At least that's my read from way up here in Canada. My track record in predicting election results is not that good. But as I get older it's getting better.
