Who can tell me about Detroit?

So I'm right in the midst of (grueling and long) interviews for a residency position in ob/gyn. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get something close to home, but it looks like Detroit might be a very real possibility. It certainly isn't my first choice of locale, but I did like the program they have there. Can anyone give me some first-hand info on the area to help make some decisions a little easier for me?

If you are looking for good trauma, it's a great place from Spring to Fall. Gunshots, vehicles, stabbings, you name it, they've got it. Winter is more about drunks getting hurt, where the Rule of the tooth/tattoo ratio applies.

I lived outside Detroit (Royal Oak) for five years. The area is great if you don't mind the winters. There are three dropzones within an hour and a half. Tecumseh is where I jumped and it is a very friendly DZ.

Outside of skydiving, the Detroit area has a lot to offer. All the major sports, concerts, outdoor activities galore.

born & raised in the metro area, and I lived downtown for 5 years...


there is an *awesome* indie/underground music scene here, if you're into that kind of thing. Something to do almost 7 nights a week, if you like going to bars & clubs & seeing live music.

Downtown/cass corridor/medical center is a strange kind of place. 8a-5p it's all kinds of business types running around, then at 5pm, downtown pretty much shuts down except for the drinking establishments. There aren't many people that actually live in the downtown area, which can be good and bad. Bad if you want to walk to a grocery store (you're going to need a car here)... Good if you like the small town atmosphere in the big city.

WSU area is lots of college kids & artists, woodbridge & corktown are also nice neighborhoods in the core city area.

As much as I hate to say it, you will find pockets of livable areas outside the above, but not many all the way out to the city limits. Hamtramck, a city within the city of Detroit, is also worth checking out if you want to do the urban thing.

I recently moved to the burbs (Hazel Park) because I got tired of the urban thing... It's nice to have a backyard and the house is nice, and the rent is way reasonable.

Outdoorsy stuff? Yeah, there's some parks & such, but to get to any serious wilderness area you're talking multiple hours in a car... The metro area is very sprawled out, almost to the point where it is all burbs from Holly to Monroe and beyond.

Wow!!! Applying for residencies already!!! This year is fun - stressful, but fun.

What programs are you looking at? Do they have night float (almost all do... and honestly, having done my intern year without night float and the second year with.... Night float is SO MUCH better.) University based programs or community based? What kind of future are you looking at (fellowship or general practice)? Look at the numbers... kinda. To be credentialled, they have to meet minimum numbers... more important is how confident the residents FEEL with their numbers. You can do 100 vag hyst as an assist... just holding retractors and not be comfortable sitting down yourself or you can do 25 yourself and know the feel of dissecting the bladder off the cervix. Also do you want a bigger program that has lots of cool things, but you're three steps away from the action (Attending, Fellow, Senior Resident... maybe you) or do you want a smaller program where it might be you and an Attending?

Finally.... it's four years of A LOT of work. Find someplace where you can destress as well. It's REALLY important. Bad things will happen, you will be tired and exhausted, you need to have someplace to escape to at times.

I lived in Lansing for a stint and was in Detroit quite a bit for work.

There are a few nice areas, but there are some BAAAAD areas too. Very much like any major U.S. city.

The negatives to me were:

1. shorter jump season due to weather
2. there are fawking potholes on all the interstates around the city

I did really enjoy Greek town and some of the underground music venues. Not sure if he is still spinning around Detroit, but Derrick May throws down some excellent techno!

Detroit isnt that bad... there are citidiots in any city. I see you like scuba diving,, about 1hr north in Lake Huron there is a marine museum with about 28 sunken ships to dive on. There are a few dropzones in the area. Randy does a nice job at midwest skydiving about half hour drive north There is an ice skating rink downtown detroit. If you like casinos they are located downtown. I know a few Docs in the city. There are a few downhill skislopes located nearby. email me if you need more info.

I lived in metro Detroit for 19 years.
While it is easier to point out all the negatives, there are some positives.
Food - GREAT food there. With so many races/cultures living there you'll never get bored eating.
Casinos, parks, lakes, rivers, museums, opera houses, all the major sports teams - not that they are great but the fans are awesome. The music scene is great, too.
What hospitasl are you considering, or are considering you?
Like others have said, there are good and bad points. Like everywhere you can get what you want out of a city.
Yes, the winters suck!! One of the main reasons I left.
Also, the local economy is driven by the automotive industry. The housing market is flat right now. Unemployment is high. There is and will always be an underlying "union mentality" in that city.

Detroit is not all too bad. It has its bad spots like any other city but also has some positives to it. You just need to be heads up in the shady areas or avoid them all together.
Since you are in the medical profession, I would imagine that Michigan would be an ideal place for you to go, we have quite a few great hospitals. Now if you were coming here to work for one of the 'Big 3', you might want to rethink that choice
Economy is down right now in Michigan, but we do have some industries looking to make it their home, we just had a google satellite office open up in Ann Arbor so hopefully we have hit the bottom of the valley and can start going back up.
Detroit offers great sporting events, concerts, Auto show, casinos, museums, Skydive Tecumseh is only like 45 minutes away . Yes the winters kind of suck, but at least you can head up north and do a little skiing

Can't tell you much about what to do for a youthful type such as yourself as I am a tad bit older, married 32 years and have 6 grandchildren, but I do live just north of Detroit in Lake Orion. There are some real nice areas like this on the edges. I work in Auburn Hills. About a 20 minute drive. Lots of good hospitals in the area. Yeah, the winters will take some getting used to. But if you know someone to stay with in Florida you can break it up with a few long weekends. I jump at Midwest, a little C-182 dropzone. Thirty minute drive. Two turbine dz's are about 1.5 hours away. True, the economy is kind of depressed right now but there will always be sick people.
