    Joke

I think it went something like this: A man is going for his first skydive. The instructors tell him, "Pull this ripcord to open your parachute. If that doesn't work, pull this red handle to open your reserve. A truck will pick you up when you land." The guy gets in the plane, rides to altitude, and jumps out. He pulls the ripcord. Nothing happens. He pulls the red handle. Again, nothing happens. Pissed off, the guy says, "I'll bet they lied about the truck being there to pick me up, too!" -- Brian perl -e '$i=14500;while($i>2500){sleep($d);$d=5;print"$i\n";$i-=1000}print"Pull!\n"'

  3. I've got a mirror up here: http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~bjmarti1/crash.wmv It's on U of I's student server, which is usually pretty quick. It might disappear at any time though, the last time I mirrored something popular the university admins yanked it for me. -- Brian perl -e '$i=14500;while($i>2500){sleep($d);$d=5;print"$i\n";$i-=1000}print"Pull!\n"'

  9. Whoa, I'm sorry I brought this up. I've actually been using jed for the last two years or so. Tons of builtin syntax highlighting, powerful built in scripting (and not in Lisp, thank god). Plus, you can change the keybindings. I started out in vi mode, then switched to Emacs bindings because they are faster. -- Brian perl -e '$i=14500;while($i>2500){sleep($d);$d=5;print"$i\n";$i-=1000}print"Pull!\n"'

    VIRUS WARNING

Dude! I still have mine made from a Radio Shack Tone Dialer. Unfortunately, it stopped working because I kept taking it apart to make "improvements" and to show my friends how to do it. -- Brian perl -e 'print join " ", reverse split _, qq/Freefaller_Another_Just/'

  14. The problem with using an iframe is that the user's browser still generates the request to dropzone.com, so a proxy will block access to the site. I just tried setting up an Apache server with the mod_proxy module. Unfortunately, the Apache module doesn't rewrite URLs in the proxied html. You can see where this could cause problems. -- Brian "The sky is lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I pull"
  15. I'm not a doctor, but I do have my first aid merit badge (thanks, boy scouts of america!). GO TO THE HOSPITAL! Puncture wounds are not funny. If you feel faint, get somebody to drive you or call an ambulance. There is no way you tell what you messed up. Do yourself a favor and don't risk complicating your injuries by trying to take care of it yourself. -- Brian "The sky is lovely, dark and deep. 17. A PAL VCR will only play PAL tapes, and an NTSC VCR will only play NTSC tapes. There are special VCRs that can play both formats, but the last time I checked, they were prohibitively expensive for the home use. As far as I know, all digital cameras record in the same format, but some (most?) can only generate an output signal in either PAL or NTSC format. Your best bet would be to contact either the manufacturer of the camera that you are interested in or a trusted electronics store. Yep, you have to use PAL tapes in PAL VCRs and NTSC tapes in NTSC VCRs. Mismatching PAL and NTSC just doesn't work. I see in your profile that you live in the UK, so if you own a VCR, it is probably a PAL player. You can check this link for a fairly long explanation of the differences (as well as a bunch of other stuff): http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:au-hAbkEJ78:www.logicaldesigns.net/divx/pdf/NTSC, PAL & Interlace Explained.pdf+explain+difference+PAL+NTSC&hl=en This link also has a good explanation, though it is based around the workings of a Playstation: http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/sps/psxfaq/mini/frame.html -- Brian "The sky is lovely, dark and deep. 19. I wear a pair of red and grey Vans. The only pair of shoes I own. They came untied while I was on the step during my 5th jump. It was to late to do anything, so I figured what the hell, if I lose 'em, I lose 'em. -- Brian "The sky is lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I pull"
  20. The only way to completely avoid this is to make the kid scan the videos back into the system while you watch. It's inconvenient and you will get odd looks from the other customers, but it works. I've been wrongly charged by at least 3 different video stores, 2 chains and a local place. I got lucky, and every time it was an older video that they only had one copy of, so they found it on the shelf, and I was cleared. My problem: Video stores don't really care about the name on the card. My sister swiped my Blockbuster and Hollywood Video cards more times than I can remember, and they never failed to rent her the movie. One time, I went into Hollywood to rent something, and the told me I had Biodome overdue by three weeks, and that I either needed to buy the video or return it and pay the late fees before I could rent anything else. Since Pauly Shore films aren't my idea of great cinema, I asked my sister about it. Turns out, she had rented it with a friend, then left it with her friend to return it. She said she would take care of it, and called her friend right away. A few weeks later, I went to rent something else, and they told me the video was back, but I would have to pay the late fees. My sister's friend had just dropped the video in the overnight box, and left me to pick up the tab! -- Brian "The sky is lovely, dark and deep. 21. Not really a dream, but.. I have trouble falling asleep. I can lay awake for hours, unless I am very tired. Living in a dorm this year isn't helping. I used to close my eyes and imagine that I was falling in silence through blackness, spinning fairly slowly. It gave me this really peaceful feeling, almost like being weightless. I would usually be out in a few minutes. Of course, now that I've started skydiving, instead of being peaceful, it's windy as hell, Vandalia is coming up at me, my heart rate goes up, and it doesn't help me sleep at all. 24. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the vertical and horizontal stabilizers refer to the orientation of the stab, not the direction that it stabilizes the plane. -- Brian "The sky is lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I pull"
