  1. do you realize: -this is the 2nd fatality THIS YEAR at TF? -earlier this year, another jumper almost died -the recent fatality was NOT the first to die because of tying off his pc -the BD fatality affected far more people, but was handled much differently by family/friends -some people that have posted here live in TF and must mend relationships after each and every tragic event. they have been fighting a backlash -some people that have posted here get the unfortunate task of reviewing the photos/video to determine why the tragedy occured -some people that have posted here have carried out seriously hurt jumpers -some people that have posted here have BEEN seriously injured jumpers -Skydivers may have trouble with death or injury -BASE jumpers are far too familiar with death or injury -the recent fatality ignored "the list" and continued to practice a known hazardous technique -friends of the deceased ignored established and posted guidelines regarding conduct in TF show some respect if you wish to receive it... 2. true. it is all about respect. by demonstrating respect, we will help to earn it. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  3. I talked to Marty at BD. he seemed to expect jumpers to change the length of their closing loop. he said there were simply too many variables for "one" correct length. 4. if you weren't there, you should NOT be defending them either... things like EFS (S - is for SKYDIVING, right?) offend just as much as lighting up a joint. would you consider doing THAT in public? if the bar was buying drinks, they were showing respect to our fellow jumpers. it doesn't sound like the jumpers demonstrated appreciation. visitors wishing to jump any object should check with the locals, and understand the local environment. this thread was started by a local to help guide visitors. it's a shame he needed to remind us... 5. it's only one less tool if packing a velcro rig... (where is that pull-up cord? where did I leave it? oh no...) back to the main point, never use a pull-up cord to pack a pc! it is too easy to be in a rush and forget... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  6. leaving the pull-up cord around the lines could prove tragic, but it is no where near the same as using a pull-up cord on a PC. (assuming you need that pull-up cord to close your pin rig...) 7. Well said. I wasn't there but I do know that different people deal with things in different ways. Do you really want to be the person to judge them? it is all about respect. the community of Twin Falls has shown BASE jumpers more respect than any other in the U.S. the Outback has shown BASE jumpers respect. these jumpers also want respect and to be able to express their loss as they see fit. unfortunately, not all behavior is appropriate for public display. when we travel to other locations, we need to remember we are guests. please act accordingly. by demonstrating respect, we will help to earn it. the BASE Outback staff, not jumpers, seem to be judging the behavior of the grieving jumpers. only they know how bad it hurts... 8. that object is misunderstood and underestimated by many. every BD, jumps there result in hospital visits. wasn't it the third year in a row that one of your assistants carried someone out? heal fast! 9. by now you should understand there are vastly differing opinions... why do you trust the original quote? might it be wrong? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  10. huh? I'm not sure I understand... if it is a new object, people should act conservatively, then decide if they can execute a more aggressive jump. this practical experience should guide someone better than numbers and calculations. but if you love numbers, do you calculate the density altitude, and carry a hygrometer to measure the relative humidity? 11. do you all agree? NO. I still need to unlearn habits developed while swooping... - different approach angles - different required range of motion - I can turn my BASE canopy far closer to the ground - swooping does not require a stand-up landing with no forward speed - BASE canopies collapse differently from swooping parachutes - line twists create different hazards use the correct tool for the desired learning. Where is Abbie?

  14. well said. Jason might have additional reasons to pull the badge, but has chosen NOT to reveal them in public. and even if Jason acted arrogantly and capriciously, I doubt many would believe it. it's just not his style. 15. No he is a BASE jumper (I think about 200 jumps). He only has 15 skydives. Get your facts straight. oops, I made a mistake. I do that. but I still don't see how that relates to the topic "what happen to the WV girl?" care to connect the dots for me? help me out? (I agree that hearing is not a pre-requisite for jumping.) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  16. that jumper is a skydiver. the post did not imply he even wanted to BASE jump. care to keep the thread on-topic? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  18. wait until someone burns your favorite object dayblazing... or some ill-prepared jumper learns of it from a video and goes in... oh, and knowing names is not critical to safe jumping. being aware of your equipment, what has been tried before, etc. WILL help keep you injury free. I'll take a new jumper ignorant of the founders over one ignorant about configuring their equipment! BD v TFs FJC

BD: safer exit. more time to open. properly manned main LZ (the water). unfortunately, limited time. this interferes with the learning opportunity. TF: with no time limit, the instructors can wait for good weather and spread the learning opportunity over multiple days. this will permit re-inforcement of the training and more opportunity to develop their skills. 21. one key point, do you understand the equipment? VBK earns serious respect for their efforts. others do as well. some young jumpers do NOT understand what they do, spend little time thinking things through, and want to be told immediately the answer to every question. this second group of jumpers give us all a bad name... BD v TFs FJC

you have many ideas. do you plan on contributing actions? such as teaching your own FJC? show us how it's done? Jason: I agree that if the fatality had been the WS jumper, many would be questioning why it was permited... (maybe not the ones questioning this incident, but there would be someone.) Mike: you continue to be an inspiration. I talked briefly to Brian Friday night. we said little, but I loved the sparkle in his eye! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  24. the BD staff develop guidelines based on experience. they have an amazing safety record, and will continue to tweak their rules. in past years, up to a third of BD jumpers were first time BASE jumpers. they nervously grip their PC's on the edge, eager to release it. I rarely see any that wait for the stated delay. some even release their pc ABOVE the exit platform. this tragedy stunned the staff as they dropped everything to assist the family. RL is correct. unless someone has facts, the criticism of those helping Brian seems inappropriate. for me, it feels like rubbing salt into a fresh wound. 25. there have been lengthy discussions in this forum discussing many of your points. did you attempt to research them? where they not clear? [sigh] DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
