  1. I'm with Avery on this one... some people attempt to add to the world. some prefer to tear down. (it's as if they can't stand seeing themselves out done...) 'course it could all be a private joke, not meant for public eyes. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  2. well, from a very basic viewpoint... when static stability exists, an aircraft returns to "normal" after being disturbed. airfoils tend to pitch forward. so, the pitching forward gets balanced by some other force. (some applications place a "reflex" on the trailing edge to induce a counter moment... this could be mimiced by bent knees.) whatever counters this moment would be assisted by an aft shifted cg. thus, the wingsuit would not need to pitch as much nose down. a flatter pitch could lead to a better glide. humans are very good at adapting. they have also done things not anticipated by established theory. instead of wondering, why not just go experiment? 3. I am not sure if standard glider control theory applies. you probably need flying wing theory. BUT... when a main wing produces lift, it generates a forward pitching moment. putting a lifting surface (canard) out front eliminates the pitch, but creates issues. most aircraft use a horizontal stabilizer behind the wing. this surface creates a DOWN force to counter the pitching moment. simply shifting the cg aft decreases the amount of downforce required. less downforce means less induced drag and better performance. I just have no clue how this applies to wingsuits... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  4. huh? were you skydiving or BASE jumping? congrats either way... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  5. try KITING your canopy. does it inflate faster in a headwind or tailwind? does it even want to inflate in a tailwind? also, airfoils need airspeed to generate lift. given a 10 knot wind, and 2 jumpers... the headwind jumper starts with a 20 knot airspeed advantage over the tailwind jumper. which will generated lift faster? 6. that is based on Sangiro's rules. personally, it appears to create a better climate; more civilized. many lurk here. I'd expect their numbers would fall if the mood changed. it definately sets this forum apart from the rest... I would expect a post containing such a blatant attack to receive a warning from the moderator. the whole tone of the thread changed dramatically because of the attack. little has been written for/against Nick's point. if Nick had ommitted the attack, this discussion would have followed a far different path. I find it odd how some events get criticized, while others are applauded. I don't recall any negative posts after the Super Bowl jump or several Stunt Junkies episodes (well, the Luigi one...) personally, I'd rather see BASE kept personal, not public. do it to satisfy an inner passion, not external fame. the big events seem to create a herd mindset which leads to less than desirable behavior. (that does NOT mean I'll abstain entirely from big public events...) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  8. [Quote] You know how cults are made? They keep drilling information into your head until you agree with them! And if you prove they are not right they will change thier words until it would appear that they are. [sarcasm] wow, is THAT what you were doing! here I thought you might be open to new ideas. my bad. [/sarcasm] I guess it would take effort on your part, which appears lacking. heck, you can't even be bothered to close a quote. I'd hate to depend on your advice. I can see why your "student" moved on... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  9. I enjoy BASE because it can NOT be governed. I recently discovered a nice object to enjoy. to my knowledge, no one else has ever jumped it. I could be wrong. I'll use care introducing others to it. but hey, if they discover it on their own... so be it. the only way to stop them jumping is to narc on them. very uncool. and I'd still lose the object... SBK does govern their object. they seem to do a good job. but that object has unique access issues. some view sites like this one as definitive. it is not. it's not a bad place to start, but feel free to grow beyond what is found here. 10. so no background checks? don't bother checking the credentials of someone: - asking to jump in your area - buying your old equipment - teaching a FJC it looks like you are new to this forum (being your first post and all). be aware your idea might prove unpopular. we have some harsh posters here highly critical of at least one instructor based on background/experience. 11. when I didn't know enough, I watched a friend with fear in his eyes. he jumped and wanted to live. he did, but suffered through an amputation. fear did NOT keep him healthy. he FAILED to find the right way. is blindly selling gear to anyone "encouraging them to put forth their best effort?" calling you up and saying "here is your money" doesn't sound like it takes much effort... 12. it must be very relaxing being so callous towards other people's health and safety... personally, if someone used my gear (borrowed or bought) incorrectly and got hurt, I'd feel guilty. I want a clear conscience. blindly selling it to anyone won't work for me. so, does that mean I have a "holier than thou" attitude? and some people feel lucky to have survived how they entered the sport. it makes sense to discourage people from the same path. what if they are not as lucky? I want to sleep at night, not bothered by second guessing. heck, we research objects before accepting the risk of jumping, why not research potential buyers before accepting some responsibility for their well being? do you also just HOPE things work out for your jump buddies, or do you make an effort to help? why encourage people to make zero effort in BASE? it is a bad habit to form. Locals Database

*** It occurs to me that it might be interesting to see the graphical representation of this reference tree, it is information. it can be used in many ways. it can help jumpers establish contacts as desired. or it can be used in less than beneficial ways... if you don't expect BASE to be welcomed with open arms, why advertise it's presence? much of BASE lives in shadows. the idea is NOT to be noticed. when someone shouts "anyone there?" jumpers can choose to remain quiet. the inquiring voice will have no confirmation of local activity. a database risks notifying the press, law enforcement, wannabees, etc. that jumping occurs in their backyard. heck, they don't even have to ask! I'd rather have most communities think BASE occurs elsewhere. p.s. two observations of human behavior: 1) people fear what they do NOT understand 2) given the choice between educating themselves or banning that which they do not understand, most people will ban. it takes less effort and creates less liability issues. 17. some of my most rewarding jumps have been solo. standing at the bottom, knowing I succeeded. not distracted by others. Miles jumps hard and hikes out fast. he is amazing. I doubt he could set the incredible pace he does if he always needed others to high-5... 18. huh? do you really wish to keep track of "dropping the soap?" who were you planning on having sex with in a men's detention facility? yep, I'd say that might be going too far... 19. it's a teacher/student relationship. on a daily basis I see relationships that would not work for me, but apparently work for them. it does not matter if it is personal, work, social, etc. if Tom's students understand, I guess my opinion is NOT important. you interact with others in ways I don't get. but so? if you and your buddies are on the same page, oh well. (Tom's students felt cheated, that's something different.) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  20. what is BADE? attention to detail while packing -> good this is made easier by habitual attention to detail. anyone interested in BASE should strengthen this habit whenever possible. 21. true, the general public remains change-phobic. it makes change difficult. a period of establishing buy-in typically helps. but the basic premise rests on people being risk adverse... BASE jumpers risk adverse? really? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  24. how 'bout these... - the sports do differ. a separate website permits a more specialized focus. - if BASE continues to grow as it has, the on-line presence needs room for growth. - it can combine the best aspects of other concepts. possibly salvage the best of BASEwiki and The List for example. - it ought to be sought out, not tripped over. a separate website might subconsciously warn/invoke/indicate a change of thinking/attitude. - it may NOT work. users tend to vote with their mouse. 25. I'd like to thank all those who safely participated in this year's Memorial day event. it is refreshing to hear after last year. ----- o.k., Ghetto makes a great point. Tree posts inflammatory language such as "knucklehead" and "Apparently sheer dumb luck won out over complete lack of skill or common sense." it was predictable that such criticism would act like a lightning rod. Tom gets attacked for NOT censoring Tree (even though Tree did not mention names. a bit of a technicality.) the jumper lashes out, denying any responsibility, claiming it was an accident. but don't two accidents make a trend? isn't that one of the criticisms of Tom? Tony, responding to Tree's inflammatory remarks, acts as a conduit for the jumper's denials. truth IS stranger than fiction. if soap opera's tried this, it would be laughed as unbelieveable! can we stop throwing stones at each other? please?!? unfortunately, we seem to have competing views regarding BASE. some want to focus on safety, others on fun. some want more legal sites, others hate the resulting compromise. some prefer being a renegade, annoying those trying to work with authorities. 'course earlier eras had their own conflicts. anyone hear of "tar and feather?" peace? doubtful, unless Dr. Phil can help. anybody got his number?
