  1. I wouldn't worry about lines clinging together, I'd worry about the fabric. wet fabric likes to stick to wet fabric. skydiving reserves must open in all sorts of unusual conditions. delay caused by wet fabric might prove unhealthy (aad activation?). still, I've seen BASE rigs packed in a rain shower. compressing the fabric looked like squeezing a sponge. evidently, it worked fine. (remember, the elevation of the bridge can be higher than aad activation altitude... and BASE jumpers are NOT at terminal.) Just curious....

the water rescue team does a fantastic job. we all need to trust, respect, and appreciate them. it's the trains that are out of control! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  4. well, it seems you HAVE received some advice. new, eager, enthusiastic, pumped up jumpers get hurt way too often. don't be in a rush to join them. oh, and if skydiving already bores you, don't BASE. you likely will push well beyond your limits to get your "fix." if you succeed, you will again become bored. that would be the good outcome... 5. return to your pre-injured life? doubt it will happen. you'll appreciate those that helped you through this ordeal. and you might already be distanced from "friends" who failed to step up. no, you'll know far better who to trust. who cares for you. if your injuries happened jumping, odds are you'll be safer, humbler, and fight to keep others from "sharing your experience." 6. "when everthing else is done right." I think you'd get better results convincing people to get better at the those other factors you mentioned. too many want the easy way out and choose not to put effort into what they CAN do. as you mentioned, if you can't quantify the problem, you'll never be able to judge that a fix works. as for me, redesign the pc. go for it. but I'd rather see people focused on what is killing people. 7. hmmm... what problems do you want corrected? at some point in becomes a cost/benefit situation. what knarly situation exists such that you want to pay 3x as much to correct? (every additional seam on a pc can create dissymmetry and consequent oscillation.) so what needs fixing? are they too expensive? please define a problem to solve before requesting facts. Open minded???

plenty has already been posted on various threads, BASEwiki, etc. be inquisitive and do your own fact checking! or get a mentor. helping a newbie wade through all the information is the job of a mentor. the mentor ensures the information is understood in context. the moderator attempts to quell outlandishly bad advice. 9. um, I WISH it had taken two years to go from 91 to 98... unfortunately, it took only 10 months, 8 days. please be careful out there! (wherever you jump.) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  14. There is a lot of that going around, whether we talk about it here or not. I know that was pretty much my original motivation. somewhere I came across the idea, "if you were perfectly content and happy, why would you do ANYTHING?" heck, marketers make you feel dissatisified with your life. then they offer whatever they are selling as the ideal solution! so, I suspect many participants started to escape something... 15. I would have thought a serious BASE jumper would know to contact the locals. - shows respect - they'll have the latest info - they can advise you on your plan - they also can ensure you have the right equipment jumpers who avoid these benefits display a confidence beyond 85 jumps... any one of these benefits could break the chain leading to an accident. why facilitate avoidance? or do you not care about other jumpers? 16. just curious, but how do you know this? (several discussions have pointed out that there are too many variables to permit accurate speed calculations...) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  17. do you (or anyone else) consider going handheld using your left hand? it could offer a cleaner launch, depending on the wind... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  18. three things to remember: 1) only do something if YOU are comfortable with it 2) err on the conservative side 3) NEVER jump with anyone who doesn't accept your opinions on the first two... 19. first off, thanks for the effort, but we will never make BASE scientifically controllable. "the list" remains a sobering read. it should dampen the enthusiasm of anyone interested in BASE. basewiki is not nearly as sobering, but it isn't very exciting either. it is a reference tool like a library or dictionary. it is best suited for those willing to put in effort. personally, I find all the "kewl" BASE videos far more bothersome. they get novices all excited and pumped. the experts captured on camera can make things look amazingly easy, and rarely show the time involved in planning. "heck, anyone can do it! let's skip the training, I can already do THAT!" this last group will forever keep BASE from being "scientifically controllable." their enthusiasm simply outpaces their skills. St. Petersburg

FYI, there is another one in the state of Florida, across the bay from the city of Tampa... nearby is a big dropzone in Zephyrhills. jumpers there can't help you... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  21. what did I learn? - that when taken too lightly, even "safe" objects will suffer injuries. - attempts at humor, crowds, cameras, and a festive atmosphere can distract people from focusing on safety (GO Skin!) 23. I doubt it will help, but here goes... when an individual chooses freedom, they must accept the responsibility as well. thus freedom is not the same as recklessness. if the carnage continues, I would NOT fear a law against jumping from the bridge. I would fear a charge of reckless endangerment (or something similar). would a jury of 12 feel the waterfall jump was planned sufficiently? you decide and are free to act accordingly. 24. I also like to thank you for the offer and the concern that led you to this site. it obviously affected you. I'm sure everyone here appreciates your compassion. the jumpers present (and their cameras) should provide enough evidence to understand the mechanics of what went wrong. more importantly, I appreciate your support. we could not do what we do without the help of many non-jumpers. heck, the cheering crowds are a joy. thanks again. TF incident

no concerns about snag points? really? 9 ft bridles? each twin might be 10 ft away from Nick to keep the containers closed. Nick's canopy is dangling below. unless everyone can maintain their relative position, there will be nylon and lines everywhere. and no one considered snag points? I must be missing something... I'm confused. heal fast Jason! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
