  1. back in the early 90's, I knew a skydiver that complained of consistently brutal openings. he sought advice from many people. he felt the openings messed up his back and made his construction job difficult. he finally realized the brake lines were left OUTSIDE the slider grommets. he claimed his openings improved greatly once he corrected the rigging. 'course much has changed since then. and he was deploying at terminal speeds... use care if rigging your brake lines outside the grommets. check out the results on a hop-n-pop first. make sure the slow speed openings are acceptable before moving on to high speed! Comp II Help

huh? I thought the environmentalists already believe a certain valley gets TOO much traffic... doesn't the NPS try to limit stays by rockclimbers? that argument might hold for some parks, but not the one we all want to jump. 3. Sort of, but not quite. The wiki is more static than a technical discussion forum. If anything the wiki would harvest common information. exactly. by harvesting common information the wiki can serve as a sort of FAQs. many "technical" questions get answered quickly, having been answered before. the threads then drift. a technical only forum seems more appropriate for cutting edge development, the specialty aspects of the sport, or sight specific questions. 5. I PREFER it really dark so I can't see anything. it is sooooo much easier than jumping with my eyes closed! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  7. well said. I'm very proud to be a BASE jumper, but not strictly for the jumping. I have seen jumpers risk arrest to aid an injured jumper. A JUMPER THEY DID NOT KNOW. I admire the rescue stories from MOAB. those who stuck with Tom M deserve immense respect. true, some have reasons to leave. I understand. but I as I watched this incident unfold, there was NO shortage of assistance, of caring. to all who did what they could to assist, you're the reason I'm proud to be a part of this group called BASE jumpers. 8. Gee. Guess what the press and public are gonna do. Thank goodness funks is getting everyone ready for it. hopefully, they might check "The List" and realize this is NOT standard. 9. BASE jumpers sould include incredible detail into their risk assessment. one possibility is that do to job issues, prior arrests, outstanding warrants, etc. your jump partner might not want to stick around and be arrested. if anyone thinks this way, IT MUST BE DISCUSSED. I might choose not to jump. most of the posts appear to realize this is a hypothetical reality. few agree with leaving a fallen comrade. please don't confuse expressing a reason for this "pact" as condoning it. oh, and NO ONE appears happy with the woefully inadequate communication. 10. I'm curious as to what funding threats could apply towards 8.2.2.7 or 36 CFR. Got some inside info you wouldn't mind sharing? this has been discussed previously. IIRC, the Bush administration is trying to change how the NPS operates. they wish to gain access to more commercial interests, as well as activities like snowmobiling. the NPS has prevented cell towers, mining, etc. the re-write of the code would force the NPS to open up. 'course environmentalists shudder at these thoughts. I expect neither group is really fighting for BASE, but the most objectionable paragraph disappeared. that doesn't mean the way is clear for jumping. no one knows what they'll require before issuing a permit... maybe the ABP deserves credit, they certainly wish to claim it. so? until we can jump without risk of arrest, there isn't much to get excited about. 11. i got the same e-mail, would you like me to forward it to you. no. if they WANTED widespread distribution of their thoughts, they know how to post. I'll respect and honor their decision. it appears they choose NOT wish to engage the greater community. as Tom mention, it looks like a control thing. it's their party, they can invite whoever they want... 12. I'll call your quote hearsay. if either gentlemen had wished to restrain the BASE community, they could have posted their comments themselves. the quote does raise a point... if you wish to comment, please make relevant comments. for example: don't insist they remove language that no longer exists. do thank them for removing the language. i.e. show support for changes you like. why not use this comment period as an opportunity to give positive feedback? but please, ensure your comments relate to the document first! The CATAPULT....

I'm not an expert, but I'd think a bungee system is an excellent option. they seem to release energy over a longer time span, thus lessening the acceleration (or g forces). having bungee jumped, I never felt any harsh shocks... 15. dude, I'm a blonde. my brain doesn't work at millisecond speed at ANYTHING. "big" and "small" might be useful shorthand, but make comparisons difficult. how can you use these adjectives and provide guidance? if you want to be totally geeky, realize your wingloading is the same as the average pressure differential between the upper and lower skins. a canopy loaded at 2.25 must generate 3 times as much aerodynamic forces as one loaded at 0.75. and actually, I was surprised by your original question. I didn't think my reply would contain anything new to you. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  16. really? it seems that overly zealous enforcement has angered many as well. most officers admit to having discretionary authority. law enforcement prioritizes their efforts as they rarely have enough manpower to rigorously enforce EVERTHING. some choose to issue warnings, while others will choose to issue citations. it helps to be polite, courteous, and respectful. I'm betting some rangers find our continued acts as snubbing our noses at authority. and the lack of respect is something that will motivate authority figures. still, if we could discover a more serious threat to the parks than BASE jumping, we could stop midnight meadow surveillance DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  17. wingloading = load placed on the wing it becomes challenging as we just throw out numbers and ignore dimensions. wingloading is simply a pressure, i.e. how much weight must each square foot support. correctly stated, it's 0.75 lbs/sq ft. (giving dimensions also permits people to convert to kg/sq meter.) hope that helps! 19. hmmmm... I've been around long enough to know I could learn a lot from JohnnyU, Tree, Tom, and others. I also know BASE is getting many new participants. they will know little about past offenses and won't search the archives. what they know will be based primarily on what gets posted NOW. please watch what you say. your presentation can seriously distract from very important points. as an example, I've heard nothing but praise regarding Johnny's FJC. he can teach newbies vital skills. but I fear the less than professional posts might discourage people from taking his course. that would be a big mistake. to all: let the past be. be friendly, helpful, and lead the new jumpers. don't discourage them from reading your posts. BD DVD Cover

speaking of typos, on K 'n A they introduce jumps off a tower "formerly knowm as..." it happens to everyone. another BD dvd curiosity is that the jumper on the dvd label does NOT appear on the disk (or I missed it...) please don't take the above as complaints. I enjoyed the dvd. thanks for the fast production! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

    yo! Bridge Day DVDs

first off, I talked to Kenyon the day before BD about not attempting to document every jump. they made their intentions clear upfront. I think it's sad not to show every jump, but understand the financial aspects. (I doubt they can press lots of 50 dvd's at a reasonable cost...) I think the pre-sale concept is a solid idea. Triax deserves credit for the fast distribution. I found the dvd well done for what they intended. since the ash jump started the day, I think it should have been on the dvd... the boogie segment actually plays well as a solid introduction to the sport and safe for all eyes. well, except for the one interruption of the Gov. remove that one edit and we have a dvd that could be used to educate media & politicians. 25. I'm surprised you've asked this question. you registered in January and have posted over 400 times. (I'm not sure how many to the BASE Zone, but this is not your first post here...) you seem intelligent. by scanning this forum you should have realized that people get hurt with only partial knowledge. others have said "I'm not going to jump," and then do. also, site selection is quite personal. it's not a question if it's jumpable, it's would YOU jump it. heck, I've chosen not to jump sites I've previously jumped. every jumper creates their own criteria. if a site is easily seen by people driving on a highway, how secretive would any jump be?
