  2. I realize many highly skilled BASE jumpers choose to keep their jumping quiet. they may not post here. they may not post video anywhere. some do not even talk about it much to others. they simply go about their business. I like that style. more than once I've stated "keep it personal, not public." I also found it strange when someone posted something like, "all the best BASE jumpers have been banned from here." I'll happily accept the majority do NOT post. I also like the French style regarding the recent fatality. little was said, so little is known by many readers here. that appeared to annoy some who believe it is their right to know every last bit of info. (course the French simply may not like to post in English...) you may have many fine points that many need to hear. your anger may be justified. many are upset by the reckless behavior that threatens popular sites. its just that the tone of your posts can prevent readers from seeing the value of the CONTENT. will you find the news of the deaths on any of the internet video sites? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  4. I'll choose not to speculate on your condition or history. I find serious BASE jumpers to be smarter than average. the leading edge of the sport studies jumps, equipment, etc. (you got to love VBK's windtunnel studies!) having a poor thought process and not being open to critical thinking leads to a short BASE career... thus I find your posts contradictory. you claim to be a very experienced jumper, but do not seem to understand posts. you seem to read what you want to, and not the intent. I can't say I always agree with Faber, but I normaly understand his ideas. (and give him credit for attempting to post in a "foreign" language.) the other quotes you supplied are equally understandable, even if I choose not to agree. you are welcome to your opinions, but they seem overwhelmed by a posionous, hostile tone. you seem quite bitter about something. instead of creating rancor, I hope you find peace. agreed. but why did he choose such a poor exit point? I suspect it was a newbie. if so, we ought to consider humiliating the person who directed him. should we not treat them BOTH the same? my sympathy goes out to the locals. you should not only be mad at him. be mad at those who assisted him via poor training or encouraged him via publicity. it's sad, but apparently inevitable... the less people openly talk about sites, the less video seen, the better we protect sites. keep BASE personal, not public! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  7. Felix B. said: priorities? 1) never been done 2) get it on video 3) safety uh, yeah... personally, I can skip the first two and be very happy! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  8. the question "do u beleave in God" typically should be restated "do u beleave in MY God." in the US, most interpret either question the same... to bring it back to BASE, the question resembles questions like "what is the best canopy?," "what is the best rig?," "what is the best wingsuit?," or "what is the best pilot chute?" few have enough experience with all options to make the call. most will respond from their own limited experience, and be enthusiastic about their choice. I think, if it works for you, GREAT! please remember that others may make a different choice. it is always better to respond by saying "this works for me" instead of "this is the best choice..." 10. I wasn't involved in the search. I don't know him. I have no ties to him. I have no special knowledge. as he came here to apologize and seems sincere, I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I'd like to think I'll support anyone who truely wishes to learn from mistakes. I agree with Faber on this one. 11. if this is accurate, be wary of posting video on any website. even ones that require registration... law enforcement officials can also figure out how to register. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  12. injuries can ruin lives. criminal records can ruin lives. raising the profile of sites can complicate jumps (didn't that occur in the UK recently?) my question, does every video need distribution? before the internet, people would torture friends with slideshows of their recent vacations. new parents love to show photos of their kids. people simply wish to share their excitement. I get that. I also understand not everyone wants to see it... and when it shows a potentially illegal activity, is it wise? now you mentioned some early footage. fair enough. well, imagine a sailing forum. imagine how cool it would be to have footage of Christopher Columbus sailing across the Atlantic. that would be the bomb. now imagine if 10% of those sailing across the Atlantic would post video... yawn. or if you prefer, how many first time tandem videos have you watched? obviously the students love them and want everyone to watch their vid. is it newsworthy? of course, neither example above depicts activity that inspires lawmakers to write new laws. authorities seem quite willing to address BASE jumping. I wish it weren't the case, but like getting busted up, it is a reality. videos can be a great tool to improve. they capture detail a jumper missed. they can help relive memories far safer than by repeating a jump. but really, how often do others post video of themselves violating laws? how often do others post video daring politicians to write new laws? some thought publicity would open up sites. it simply hasn't happened. they were wrong. maybe it will change, but it appears unlikely. by keep your video and jumping personal, you can avoid complicating YOUR life. people advise others how to be safer all the time. we as a community like to find ways to prevent injuries and deaths. why not advise to prevent law enforcement issues? like tension knots they may be rare, but it remains a possibility. 13. welcome back. we all need to realize this sport has harsh realities. Nick's list testifies to that. many have posted about serious injuries. it is part of the BASE. please consider how others would be impacted if you had a real situation. your mother has already been put through a rough time. hopefully she understands and you made peace with her before coming here. I really hope I'm stating the obvious... it sounds like you are committed to turning things around. kudos to you and don't hesitate to ask for help. #108 - ?????????

nice post. I wish it was not necessary... hopefully the French crew find peace. to the rest: I view the silence surrounding this accident as a compliment to the French crew. keep BASE personal, not public! 16. I wish people would not look at this as a blame game. I view it as an opportunity for people to stand up and accept responsibility for their actions, a chance to learn from mistakes. we don't need to act on emotions, but on rational thought. many use video quite constructively for this very purpose. Jeb has manned up for the ESB attempt. will anyone who posts video change? I don't know. please be aware that efforts to popularize BASE will have unintended side effects. not everything goes as planned, expected, or even hoped. raising the profile of BASE will raise the concern of many politicians. BASE has evolved. it looks far different than in Carl's day. we have learned how to be safer and the price of not acting responsibly. I think we should learn from the past rather than blindly repeating it. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  18. they may be banned from posting, but they CAN still read... or can't they? some cant even access www.dorkzone.com anymore. They are not able to receive the usuful information the website has to offer, and cant browse the classifieds. are you saying banned people can't go to a friend's home and view dz.com? or use a public access pc, such as at a library? and if the website offers useful information, why do you insist on changing the name? it insults the site and the people who find value here. it shows little respect. (oh, and btw - plenty of talented BASE jumpers have NO problem posting here. some names you might recognize, and some you might not. not every talented BASE jumper seeks a soapbox, fame, publicity, notoriety, etc.) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse

  20. Tom's first post contains a course description without justification for any particular skill. Tom's stated reason for teaching these skills seems to be in line with your opinion. - you both think they ought to learn in a controlled environment. so are you agreeing or disagreeing with Tom? ----- understanding and critical thinking enhance a jumper's odds on any particular jump. this forum gives us all a chance to practice both. we all ought to take advantage and develop these skills. Tracking

from too much base work on big ways, I'd say that is the best track position. (I've seem shots of Douggs just nailing it beautifully...) my limited experience in a proper BASE environment is from Norway. once I got up to speed, everything went great. the exit portion needed work... it just took longer to get separation than most objects permit. I would NOT be pleased doing the same off a 1000' A. as a narrow stance will detract from stability, is that acceptable on a particular object? how about jumping with a strong tailwind? wouldn't the best technique differ from a no wind condition? like other aspects of this sport, I expect "the best" will vary with the local circumstances. 22. until I know more, I'll trust the designers. they know a whole lot, and Todd will answer questions. it seems logical they evaluted the design for terminal jumps. that being said... the speed of slider decent depends on how much air it catches. this is a function of porosity and overall area. the large mesh means the FLiK slider catches little air. the larger size of the slider permits the risers to spread, to a more natural width. theoretically, this will result in a flatter, more efficient parachute (similar to swoopers pulling the slider down). is it the reason the slider is bigger? don't know. I'd recommend changing it if YOU discover a solid reason to change... YOU are the test jumper... Carnage Video

it's your site, so it is your rules. but you may wish to consider some points. personally... the BASE community regularly fights public perception. we complain that treatment by law officials and the media is biased. - but we edit which videos are readily available? isn't that introducing bias from our side? are we not practicing the same behavior we complain about? ----- many also don't like the number of unprepared jumpers entering the sport. - isn't this a side effect of the biased slant of all these videos? are not carnage videos used to dampen the unbridled enthusiasm created by the readily accessible videos? ----- like most things in BASE, it is your choice... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  24. good catches! but what is the link between quality of packjob and frequency of packjob? how does a consumer know if they are purchasing a quality re-pack (other than shipping their rig to you?). I find it re-assuring that you mentioned things related to rigger error rather than equipment flaws. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  25. but who ever engages in such "esoteric wranglings?" ridicule? from who? it only seems to happen amongst fellow jumpers. as I approach an object, all I care is if we CAN jump it. does everyone wishing to jump have sufficient skill and appropriate equipment? (am I the weak link?) as I spell BASE with 4 letters, I'll squeeze every object into one of 4 categories. if it does not fit well, oh well. if someone else chooses to do it differently, so be it. how anyone will log an object never really comes up... if it does not matter to Joy & Rick, it does not matter to me. use of the term "integrity" indicates it matters to you. doesn't that lead to the "esoteric wrangling" and "ridicule?"
