  1. any thoughts on people seeking publicity for BASE other than Tom? do they "crave" attention as well? how about the other FJC instructors who openly advertise their courses? how about the jumper busted at the ESB (possibly rattted out by a member of the production staff documenting the jump)? how about the other jumpers who are sponsored by business to attract attention? do you feel as strongly against them as Tom, or is Tom somewhat special? (I'd really like to know.) I wish they all had kept it on the dl. all of them. we are in agreement that this production is full of peril. we differ in that I'll wait until I see the final product before making harsh judgments. also, jumping and teaching are distinctly different skills. look at pro football in the US. know any coaches that were once all-stars? any? 2. I view this just as a high-risk jump. in general, it should NOT be done. the only way to contemplate it is after much study and preparation. even then, the odds remain iffy. I feel BASE videos on the internet do NOT paint a well balanced portrait. as such, I think they harm more than help. this effort is an attempt to balance that portrait. I wish it well, and would not dare do it. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  3. are you that lazy? this is a public forum for all to read. if you slam someone here, you must be bold enough to provide facts there. honor dictates YOU do the work, not the readers. to date, I've asked numerous times and have yet to be provided any information here. Miles' disciples simply hijack threads for unsupported attacks. your link points to a different forum. before the author was banned, I PM'd him and asked him to discipline his posts. I said his ideas needed to be heard. I liked hearing from him. it became quite obvious that he would be banned because of his conduct. he needed to hold a more civilized tone. if the author consents, I'm willing to post the PM. Sangiro appears quite intent on hosting civilized conversations. also, that thread does NOT apply to the ESPN crew filming recently. got anything to say on THIS topic? or will you again dis-respect Miles' positive public image? or will you simply tag-out to someone else? 4. I agree with your concept. please supply evidence to show that it applies! again got evidence? I might agree with you! again, got evidence? how about my critical posts already in this thread! feel free to PM. 5. before you wear more armor, consider trying to swim in waterlogged protective gear... if you PLANNED on using the water as the main out, why wear much more? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  6. congrats! how did you like the experience? highs? lows? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  7. and where are your facts? you posted numerous allegations, but no facts! uh pot, meet kettle... what is with the "Cult of Miles?" Miles has obvious skills and talents few possess, but his followers seem to be a bunch of mal-contents. you can identify them by their regular trashing of the moderator. they NEVER supply any facts. they just complain of ill treatment. (by now, one would expect they have collected a ton of evidence...) every time I've met Miles, he exudes a positive energy. it's almost freakishly positive. but these posts from his cult lack any of that energy. they tend to be freakishly negative... if I were Miles and had his skills/knowledge/abilities, I'd be downright embarrassed by these posts "supporting" me. 8. therein lies my confusion. it leaves me guessing and apparently, I'm not close... that is why I can't understand your view. that is why your opinion appears to lack any basis. it's honorable to keep things shared in a PM private. but why then not ask Tom in a PM? why ask in a public forum and then keep key information private? isn't that just inviting confusion and mis-interpretation? I respect the efforts of many to improve BASE jumping and the raw talent of others. people like Rick & Joy, Jason, NickDG, Jason, Miles, Jimmy/Marta/Todd, etc. all have areas of expertise that I would be well advised to follow. in their area of expertise, I choose to give them the benefit of doubt. I may not know enough to understand their rational. (just as I don't understand yours.) 9. I could be standing at an exit point. a more experienced jumper advises me to walk down, but then jumps themselves. I'd rather say "thank you Milles." than call Miles a hypocrite! situations differ. what might be appropriate for some is not appropriate for others. you seem to think your effort/abilities are the same as Tom's. if so, your charge is valid. but you say you are NOT trying to run with the big dogs?!? which one is it? Tom has chosen a high risk game. let's see if he can pull it off before being harsh. 10. [disclaimer: Tom's effort might blow up. we will not know until we see the finished product. and I'm less than excited about it...] do you not see a qualitative difference between ESPN's abilities and yours? do you not see that Tom has a more developed sense of what is appropriate and how things should be handled? (his experience ought to count for something). if either are the case, it seems a case of sour grapes. of you thinking you (a newbie) have the right to run with the big dogs and being rebuffed. (can anyone say 100 jump wonder?) or do you realize you can claim victory? heck, maybe YOU educated Tom! he's just following YOUR lead! you showed him he was wrong and is playing catch-up with you! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  11. interesting allegation. got any facts to back it up this apparent motivation? oh and the incredibly humorous aspect of this... you claim Tom seeks attention. so what do you do? you reward him with what? ATTENTION! (DOH!) if you do not respect Tom, why would you give him what he wants? (DOH!) at least if you provide facts, you might rob Tom of the sympathy vote. (sympathy your rumor mongering generates). (you might want to stop using Homer Simpson as a role model ) DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  12. nice post explaining your views and goals regarding this project. I realize the finished piece does not yet exist, BUT has the ESPN crew behaved as expected? have they said/done things that made you question your decision? are you more or less hopeful? if the piece fairly captures the preparation involved, the planning, the training, etc., it might be a useful FJC pre-requisite. 13. yep. the more public BASE jumping becomes, the more likely a politician will grandstand the issue. try to get elected by "protecting" the public. see the Jeb/NYC case (or smoking, or drunk driving, or...) few understand why we jump. a good chunk of the public fears what they don't understand. hopefully I'm wrong and this effort makes a positive impact. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  14. with all of 50 jumps and 1 year in the sport? no, you do NOT need to see that video. you can wait until you are ready. how could you claim a reasonable perspective to interpret those images properly? give it time. let your knowledge base grow... DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  15. what is the matter with us? we are trying to keep you alive and injury free. we are trying to keep you from making a big mistake. why do we respect your well-being more than you? you may have the boldness, you may find the knowledge, but few think you have the SKILL to make this work. please find the necessary answers via proper TRAINING! 17. o.k. you have been hearing from some well intentioned people who do NOT wish you to start on your own. there is a HUGE difference between BASE and free climbing. you may have the knowledge/skills/boldness to free climb, but only the boldness to BASE. if you continue on your own, you stand a much higher chance of becoming an ugly statistic. your profile says San Diego, but you are now in Greece. some who replied feel mislead and thus antagonistic. others wonder why you don't seem willing to travel somewhere else and learn properly. (obviously you understand how to travel if you were in San Diego.) like so much else in life, your key to success depends on how seriously you take preparation. by counting on anonymous/unknown advisors on the internet, it appears you are under-preparing. please read my signature line (the last line, in red). DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  18. your profile says you have 120 jumps in 1 year. if true, you may not be able to appreciate/understand/properly prepare for the risk you seem intent on accepting. even of more concern is who trained you? the sort of questions you are asking should be covered in a FJC or by a mentor. by the quite limited facts available, you appear to have chosen a hard, dangerous method to enter the sport. you may select an object with unforseen hazards, or even jumped regularly by others. if the latter, there may be methods to prevent accidental discovery. you seem open minded (a huge plus), so can you tell us more about how you have prepared/planned for this jump? DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  19. you are welcome to your viewpoint, but I view the state of BASE differently. many of the most well-known BASE sites throughout the world have had a rash of incidents and accidents. local residents have started grumbling about the wisdom of continuing to let BASE jumpers jump. even a politician in NYC sought votes recently by endorsing an anti-BASE jumping law. hopefully, the BFL adds sobriety and thus prevents the incidents and accidents that endanger the sport. the BFL helps keep sites open. you may see a rash of new jumpers, but do you see a rash of new BASE sites? I don't. I have read about sites put at risk. the successfull high-profile jumping occurs at controlled events (such as KL & BD). carnage is more likely at uncontrolled events (remember last year during the "big" weekends at TF?) maybe commercial BASE parks will generate enough funds to properly lobby politicians. to bad I know of none. as such, it is incredibly easy for politicians to demagogue the issue. sex may sell, but fear leads to votes. since much of the public fears BASE, some politician will stoke that fear to advance themselves. the best way to get the politicians on our side is via hefty political contributions. hopefully, people like Jason CAN achieve some success. there are others trying. several different organizations have been created to change NPS policy. none have succeeded to date. I'm unaware of any activity to open a privately owned object. (maybe the RGB?) in the US, the liability issues will dampen the owner's enthusiasm. as for competitions, they have been tried. maybe their time will come, but history is against it. how am I misreading history? you've lived through more of it than I. I'd be happy for you to educate me on how I'm wrong... until then, I prefer being a realist. I may die on any given jump. I need to structure my life accordingly (respect to those who jump less after gaining children). I need to pick and choose my jumps based on the risk and my skill level. I will reference the BFL to enhance my situational awareness. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  20. I doubt anyone wants their name on the list... but if I earned a place, please let someone learn from me! DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  21. agreed. people can choose to: 1) complain, bitch, moan (act negatively) 2) take action to create a preferable alternative (act positively) I just prefer option 2)! which also seems to be the preference of Spatula Rigging. cool. and it also appears the preference of Jimmy Hall's family/friends/fans who created a special website. again, cool. 22. politicians, actors, etc. can all say the same. historians make a living "recording" a perspective from which many disagree. you present an image of a free spirit, enjoying what many do not understand (getting maced, then shotgunning a beer). you enjoy breaking the norms, defying convention (training Clair). now you wish to establish standards of conduct? has someone stole your password? I've disagreed with things you've done, but still have tried to defend you from unwarranted criticism. now this. your argument would be far more credible if you stepped to the plate and offered an alternative; show us what you would applaud. simply complaining does not suit anyone, let alone you. are you getting old? 23. I'd be very upset/angry if someone gave the impression that some list is more important than my friend's death. If you look at it that way, Nick made the right decision. personally, I think the list IS far more important than one persons feelings. or a group of people's feelings. since when are a few more important than the many? no single person is that important. get over your egos/hero-worship/whatever. feel free to be angry/upset at me. the list taught people. it helped prevent others from making the same mistake. it helps keep the jumpers from dying in vain. if you can't deal with the ramifications surrounding death, well, maybe BASE is not for you. consider bowling instead. death is a possibility on every jump. awareness of that fact should lead to a certain level of sobriety. if not, you should ask yourself if you are a statistic waiting to happen. and instead of whining about Nick, why didn't someone create an alternative? make Nick's list unpopular by providing something better? building instead of destroying? I've enjoyed BASE because it IS an expression of personal responsibility. it is an amazing, positive act. I don't see anything positive in the complaints surrounding the list. I don't see anything positive in the loss of this educational tool. it appears that the attackers have won. what's next? reporting potential jumps to authorities to "preserve" sites? maybe those who complained ought to get jobs with NPS. they'd fit in there. DON'T PANIC The lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. sloppy habits -> sloppy jumps -> injury or worse
  24. Nick, thanks for the List. it was your decision to create it. only you can decide to remove it. to the naysayers... what better memorial to the fallen than to learn from their mistakes? why let them die in vain? heck if I die jumping, let me be the last one to make that particular mistake!
