    Base and Parents

Cesslon, The height of the span has been posted a fair bit here. Since you have been here a while I would suggest you find that answer youself. You might learn a little while doing this. Different objects require different execution. FYI I do not BASE jump yet, but you should already know that by now.
  2. Just to add. I beleive that if you do such a jump you really need to have the correct documentation to look like you are not just a bunch of yobbos. Keeping in mind try to avoid documenting in such a way you put your foot in it or look like collaberation, ask the lawyers. Make people sign weivers (even if you assign everyone a number). Also set rules and try your best to keep it safe. Some compromises could be made (like no aerials) so that the nps think you are making an effort. Of course things like making sure a first aid kit and someone trained is available etc.. You might want to consider some of this even if it is a protest jump. Might make it look better if they arrest you. Hard for them to say you were trying to harm yourself when you made every effort. Its all about perceptions.
  3. Instead of calling it a protest jump. Why not call it a record attempt or similar. At least it is not as confronting and you can always then call it a protest if that does not work. Once you have precedence it will be easier to get other permits. Another option is a funraising jump. You could try to put it in a context that they would sound like heartless souls to say no.
  4. So we not banned from that thai place. good to here :) 0:0:0

    Tandem + 1

I have to say I am jealous, cause I have not been able to jump since December and I only broke my fibula. Mind you it was a workers compo case so I have to follow doctors orders to a T. Hope you did not get too bored when you were not able to jump. Any adventures worthy of sharing during this time? Btw would it have been a bitch to land with three guys. What was the plan if you couldnt get the height?

    Tandem + 1

Awsome, congrats. Didn't happen if it was not caught on video though.
  7. I have finally bit the bullet and booked my slot on the learning curve camp in September. I will also be going to the ABC in October. Not having jumped my rig before (or pro packed), how many jumps should I expect to do each day (ie how much do I have to save). Is there a minimum number that I should aim at doing to make it worth my wild (ie 3 a day etc..) Plan on camping it in a tent at both places (will have a car). How are the facilities for Tents at Ramblers? If anyone needs a lift in september from brisbane to ramblers, or in october from canberra to nagambie for the ABC give me a PM. I am attending a packer b course at nagambie in two weeks time. I hope to do my recurrency and conversion to my new rig at Nowra. Then I hope to do my B-rels the following week. So hopefully I will be in a position that I can take advantage of the learning curve and not be too unsafe (from not jumping for 8 months).
  8. I have to say I do not have much knowledge of this area. I did find the below link (in the appendix) helped me understand how much I did not know about ropes. Any more good resources about knots that would be useful or similar information. http://www.petzl.com/petzl/frontoffice/static/catalog/sp/SP2005_EN.pdf

    Logging RW jumps

http://www.herculesboogie.com/04/rules.htm The above makes me think that you do not need 300 formation skydives for doing Relative work. Just 300 jumps that were not student jumps. In terms of how much do you log etc.. I have not started loggin much (only 27 jumps) but I would say how many people I was on a jump with and number of points and the type of jump (wingsuit, rw, ff, etc..) If you put this information you should be able to answer any questions people have in the future. Of course height, dist from target etc.. but I was more meaning the description part. Please let me know how you go, I have been considering trying to get to the herc boogie. Well thats the reason I am going to give myself when I start spending all that money again.

    The BASE Experiment

I want some of whatever you are taking.
  11. I am currently in a similar situation. I broke my leg Dec, didnt heal so I got surgery (plate + pins). That was 2 months ago and I am now allowed to walk without any fancy stuff and am doing well at PT. My doc says that I shouldnt be jumping for another 3 months because even though the bone is fixed in regards to the xray it is not as strong as it could be. So I would wait till you can full load bear, then give it an extra. The guy I have is a specialist in this field (foot/ancle) so even though other doc's say otherwise I take his word on it. As said above I am using this as a good reason to save money to buy gear and go hard jumping when I return.
  12. I am going to Brians course and I will not be able to jump. I have been told that other people have done the same. So I would not worry about where you are at with jumping, and I would find a way to get the money. You will learn new skills and this will make you safer.
  13. Just an update, pretty much I am out of the cast walking and all that (with a limp). Pretty much healling great and should not have any problems. I will be able to hike again in 2 weeks, hopefully start running again in 6 weeks. But doc has said I should not ski this year. And he said I shouldnt skydive for 3 months. Arg, accident happened first week of December so that means I will have been off skydiving for 8 months total. Damn and all the good training camps are in June/July. Oh well. How many other people have broken their lower fibula and got a plate. What turn around did you have after the surgery?

    BASE RIG

Hi, At the top of this post there are two great articles "getting into BASE" and "My First BASE Rig". They are highly recommended. The below URL about an accident which occured a little while ago gives some good info (IMO) on why it is important to get the skills before you do your first jump. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1565867 If you have not already, watch the dam strike video. It is a must for all people thinking about doing BASE IMO. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1379574 If you are still after information about getting a rig I would read info about the requirements of equipment on bridge day. I would learn as much as you can about the gear you are using. Learn what the difference between velcro and pin rigs are. Learn about when you delay and why you have slider up/down. Learn about what pilot chutes are and what size to use on which jumps. I am a total newbie, but I know that there are no stupid questions. You just have to understand that this is definately not one sport you should "just take someones word on". At the end of the day its your life and you really should do your best to have a say in how you live it. I just suggest if you have a question do a search on it. Do not asume you learnt anything from the search and then word what you think you have learnt into this thread and ask the experienced people what you should do. There is nothing worst than helping someone who does not help themselves. Sorry if I am telling you how to suck eggs. It is just your first post was very vague and this makes me think you are a whuffo, because someone would have been more specific in the rig type. Normally they mention type of jump they are going to make, experience, requirements like velcro rig, or specify brands and ask for review. The below thread is an example of a thread where someone asked a similar question to you but got the opposite response. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1585524
  15. Hi, There are a few ways of doing it. One is reviewing all the links that the mms page give you. But its not for the faint hearted. Easiest way is to download a program like streambox. PM sent, with a link to a copy you can download. Edited to add: Btw try unplugging the internet and watching the video in your internet cache. It links to the website even though its 1.9mb. Again there are ways around it, do a search on mms stream ripping etc.. Just thought I would add that the filename in this instance was "17290020050423_000751000843p0.wmv#0;1.000;5398;57863;1:2;2:2" so not something you would work out based on the name. Under "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files". You can then double click on this, open in windows media player and then go file - add current track to playlist. Which will ensure it does not point to the net. -op5e
  16. Squeak, come over here and say that. Acutally wait a month or so until I can jump again, then we can share some sky.
  17. I did not want to make a thread on this topic because it has probably been beaten to death. So instead I have brought to life an old one. I am considering purchasing some freefly pants. I will probably puchase RMW pants and probably buy birdman pants in 6mths if I get into tracking. I just wanted to know why people use specific freefly pants instead of just normal pants. I have been wearing dragin jeans (http://www.dragginjeans.com.au/products/index.htm) under my jumpsuit for most of my jumps. Mainly because these are my most comfortable pants I own, and if they help in a motorbike crash I am sure they will save my knees from getting scratched a little. The ones I have are cargo pants, so perhaps I should get ones without a pocket so it doesnt flap around in freefall. But other than putting velcro or elastic around the ankle is there anything else that would make these pants unreasonable for freefly. Other than re-enforced butt and knees and flares, what makes freefly pants? Just thought I would add that I do know someone who wears these pants and came off a bike. They got scratched by the kevlar in the pants, but we will never know if this is/was worst than wearing normal pants and being scratched by the road. Also what makes up freefly jackets. How much do these effect you in freefall, and in what way. Edited to add: I am 75 kg and fairly average build. So I do not know what fallrate I will have in Freefly yet. But I do not see me needing extra baggy pants.
  18. Squeak, Since you are normally the first to post the weekend numbers could you perhaps please include the "humps (special events): jumps : beers owed" description on the first post each week. I had to search for a little while when I first joined to work out what the 3 numbers meant to avoid asking what x:x:x meant. I guess most people are in the same boat. This goes for anyone else who starts the weekend number thread. Just an idea, whats you guys think? -op5e
  19. Brian posted his future courses in another thread if anyone is interested. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1607085;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread
  20. humps:jumps:beers humps is sometimes replaced with major events like 600 miles driven or 10 hours peeling potatos.
  21. I personally will jump with a cypress at every chance. However I do see me jumping with one turned off in the future. I like the idea if I bump the head on the plane or another skydiver it protects against that. I personally will do everything in my power to make sure it NEVER saves me from a low/no pull where I was able to do so myself. I do not see it being a substitue for me getting fabric over my own head. A cypress recently fired high due to a fault, who is to say it is not going to fire low. It might be a 1 in a million chance but if I have an option I am going to bet on me pulling. I have seen people do Static line or AFF jumps and the cypress fire. I personally think they should consider taking up golf. I have heard them say, yeh I just arched until it pulled for me. The people do not realise this thing saved their life and did not 'just do its job', and they didnt even send Cypress a bottle of whiskey. This mentality scares me and I think this is what some people are strongly against. I also know other people who take more steps in relation to safety when dealling with students or low jump numbers. I think these people should be pat on the back.
  22. In zone alarm just up the security setting to high. And then on program just up it to "request access". It is a really powerful program just read through the help. If you are using broadband, most adsl/cable modems will have a nat based firewall so you can put in what ports you want to allow/disallow. PM me if you have any specific question, but I would advise reading the manual first
  23. I always find it amusing they need a link when the pub link is at the top of the page. At least for me.
