    Traveling with Gear

I will buy one (1) 12 FL OZ beer (of cheap domestic origin) for the person who (with video) does the following: -Waltz through security with no luggage and with your rig on your shoulders -Stop at the gate to put it on and then board the plane -Sit down next to the emergency exit and order a drink while donning your helmet and reaching for the aircraft emergency instruction booklet... Bonus points if you bring a Qu'ran... -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." Web Design Cleveland Skydiving
  2. I just went out to breakfast with my parents this morning, and the age-old issue popped up again. I've always been honest with them, showed them videos and told them I was going to do it long before I actually started. They are accepting of what I do, but they are also very worried. My brother and sister pretty much say "have fun, don't die". Most of the rest of my family (aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, etc) seems think I am off the deep end, an adrenaline junkie, and an all-around jackass. No matter how much I try to drill it into them that I am not some kind of suicidal yahoo with a death wish, they just dont seem to get it. And they play the guilt trip on me every chance they get. As much as you may want to share your passion and experiences and stories with them, it's probably best just to never bring it up or tell them any of the details. Besides, we all know that no words or video can describe how we feel when our feet leave the edge. -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 4. i was in twin falls for the first time last december. It was cold and windy, but if you can suck it up it just adds to the adventure Dress warmly though, and don't pack in the snow
  5. who needs an FJC when you get to start this sport with a bucketful of luck? Try www.snakeriverbase.com or www.apexbase.com. I took Tom's course last year (snakeriverbase) and I think it was great -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." Web Design Cleveland Skydiving
  6. i know a guy who got a dui on a bicycle... He rode his bike to the bar instead of driving because he was trying to be "responsible" after his first dui... The judge was at least cool enough to just count it as a first dui since it was on a bike and he agreed that it was ridiculous. Even then a 1st dui is pretty damn harsh. -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." Web Design Cleveland Skydiving
  7. This is terrible news. Let these last two fatalities be a reminder to all that there is no such thing as 'Just a Bridge'. Condolences to the jumper's family, friends, and the twin falls locals -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." Web Design Cleveland Skydiving

  10. Yeah, that'll happen from time to time.... My first time working on microwave dishes, i spent about 30 minutes in front of two dishes (kind of in a crossfire between them) while running some lines. They were small dishes (2' and 4') but they were active. I made the mistake of assuming that they had been shut off. Chris, doesn't osha require you to have at least one person on the ground while you work upstairs? or was this some time ago? -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 11. Being able to quickly identify and correct a dangerous situation with instinctive canopy inputs (while swooping a highly loaded x-braced canopy for example) is one hugely important skill in BASE. A swooping freeflyer with thousands of jumps may not be very familiar with a big 7-cell f111, but they should be able to quickly figure out that their canopy is opening off-heading and is going to slam them into a wall if they dont yank on some seatbelts. Most first-, second-, or tenth-time skydivers have little or no concept of their heading, no idea what their canopy is doing on opening, and have to memorize flash cards to figure out why their canopy isnt there, square, or flying where they want it to. Additonally, somebody may appear to be a great student and pick up the book knowledge and exit practice very well, and then brainlock when they are actually put to the test. Most experienced skydivers have already dealt with their share of high-speed no-shit-there-i-was-about-to-die situations, and the shock and awe has been replaced with automatic corrective responses. Whether those responses are correct is another story... but its better than freezing... -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 14. maybe she realized that a whuffo reading "i had 6 linetwists, all the way down to the risers, so I checked my altimeter and located my handles. I was above my hard deck so I had some time to try to kick out of the twists" ...might not understand what she meant. She may have just been dumbing it down for the public. If it's suspected that she fudged her log book to meet the requirements, then thats another issue. -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 15. Lots of alcohol, big bonfire lined with large block-shaped rocks, and a bet with mooch for a packjob. I swear to god i made it on the first attempt... but just to prove that i won, i just haaaaad to do it again. I fell about 2 inches short and heard a really strange noise come out of my ankle..... 3 days and about 18 vicadin later, just when i thought i was about to go through a withdrawal, I show up in cincinnati to work on a tower, and my boss hands me another bottle of vicadin... -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 16. TJ you are one sexy bitch. And young too. What exactly did you injure ? (I *assume* you saw a doctor) He sprained his ankle. Very similar to my fire-jumping incident at xenia a few months ago. His foot seems to be following the same progression of misery that mine did. Mine still feels weak and hurts 2 months later... I highly recommend seeing a doctor too (theyll give you some reeeeally nice halloween candy.... just make sure you whimper in pain every time they touch it) -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 23. Thanks for all the info guys. I'll probably just stick with 4 lines then. Also, does anybody have experience here with mesh sliders on sabres? Those slider-down sabre openings are really starting to hurt and I'd like to slow them down a bit -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear." 24. I'm filling out an order form for a new FliK 293 right now. I'm about 6'7" / 200lb with pretty long arms. I'd like to know if there are any other taller jumpers out there who have flown canopies with the 5th control line and whether or not they have had issues with stalling the canopy on landing. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. If it turns out to be too much trouble, then I'll just go ahead and use my sabre 170 in my skydiving rig with collapsible pilot chute on 2-second delays. I hear from jumpers in the field that this configuration has been working quite well lately. -Ghetto "The reason death cannot frighten me, is because life has cured me of fear."
