  1. There was a thread a few weeks back where someone was talking about doing the same thing. If someone did this on a tandem of mine they wouldn't jump with me again. I do allow video guys to dock on my passenger but I know what is going on and they are flying the slot not using the tandem to keep them in the fallrate.
  2. Yea, I have done close to 1000 of them
  3. You accept the risk to skydive, some people would say you are stupid for that. There are others that accept a bit more risk when they decide they want to swoop. Why should this should someone else decide what amount of risk we are willing to take? If this starts to happen to much someone will be telling you that you can't skydive. I understand that there should be rules as to where one can swoop, for others safety, but people should be left to decide for themselves what is to dangerous for them. And what are the non skydiving extra cirricular activities you speak of?
  4. You can buy what you are looking for at Radio Shack for about $50 bucks. It's just a cheap audio mixer.
  5. I think what BIGUN meant was a downsizing plan to jump progresively smaller canopies until you get down to the 190. Going from straight from a 280 to a 190 is a huge leap no matter what your weight is.
  6. As said, fly your body, you can out fly whatever they are doing. Don't worry about what you look like on video if you have to compensate for poor body position, your job is to bring the student down safely, not look good for the video.
  7. Tom, I have passed the torch down to you young green grasshopper. You know I was getting all the pukers but I told manifest to let you have them from now on. Now that you have few tandems under your belt I know you can handle it. Once you hit the 100 tandem mark I will let you have all the fainting passengers also.
  8. Go during the week. The rates are about 3 times more on the weekend. You will get a much better rate downtown, but I would still stay on the strip. My last trip the cheapest casino I found to stay at was Circus Circus it is at the end of the strip but you can take the tram down the strip. I didn't end up staying there so I can't tell you what it's like. Check out Orbitz type sites and you can get an idea there.
  9. I hate to fly. I have flown commercial but still don't like it. I have almost 3,000 skydives and one of the scariest experiences happened landing on one of the 4 or 5 loads I have rode the plane down.
  10. I agree with every thing freefalle said. Set your limits and stick with them. Whether it winds, students, or who can lurk or shoot video with you. I know you have shoot a bunch of tandem video as did I before I got my rating. I learned alot from watching others. Some taught me what to do and others taught me what not to do. Use what you have seen to help you be the best TM you can. Remember to fly YOUR body, if you fly yourself it won't matter what your student is doing. Have fun.
  11. I don't think anyone can tell YOU what to do. It is a very personal decision. I went bask and forth on wether I was going to keep jumping when my daughter was born. Yes you will have to discuss it with your wife if you want to keep her around. I decided to continue and have kept jumping for the 5 years that I have had kids. I jump much less than I did before the kids but that is fine with me. I see on your profile that you are new to the sport. I don't think I would have continued jumping if I had just entered the sport (I had 1500+ jumps and 8 years at the time.) Also Know that even if your wife argrees for you to keep jumping she may change her mind if you have to attend a funeral. Good luck.
  12. I get good service from Verizon in Tallahassee.
  13. If you want it bad enough you find a way. My first year I was going to school and only working part time. I some how managed to make 430 jumps and buy 2 sets of gear. Now I pretty much don't jump unless I'm getting paid for it. BTW, it doesn't get any cheaper once you are off student status. You will spend just as much money, you will just make a few more jumps a weekend.
  14. You need to tell the DZO what you said here. Tell them you are only paid for jumps, instruction, video, ect... If they would like you to do other things clean, answer phones ect.., you will be happy to for $??? per week. Or they can do it themselves or find someone else to do it.
  15. I haven't had much of a problem with no goggles. My eyes water a bit but have neve never had pain from it. I'm sure I have done more than 50 full altitude jumps without goggles. It's not something you want to do on every jump but if you forget your goggles it's not a big problem. I will usually give mine to someone on the load if they forgot theirs and are not comfortable jumping without them.
  16. I am suprised to see how many people who leave them unclipped. It takes about 2 more seconds to loosen and reclip them. My examiner told me how he used to leave them unclipped, then once after finishing some spirals he went to let up on the toggle and found it trapped in the open quick release. This in addition to the obvious reasons for leaving them clipped should be enough to spend an extra 2-3 seconds clipping them.
  17. [I agree 100% with this statement reply]It was explained to me this way: A tandem skydive is the safest way for a student who has never made a skydive to jump from an airplane. From the instructor's point of view, it is the most dangerous way for them to get that student from the airplane to the ground.
  18. I have done a cross country jump that we covered 22 miles. We exited at 14K and the upper winds 79 knots. I was jumping a 220 loaded at about 0.8. I wasn't familiar with the area and flew well beyond our intended landing area.
  19. Did you forget to track somewhere in there or you just dump directly under the tandem every time? People seem to think that because you open 2K below the tandem that it is ok not to track. If you do not track one day you are going to be stowing your slider when that tandem comes through your canopy at linestrech of the reserve.
  20. I have an old friend that just called me the other day. He hasn't jumped in about 3 years due to a back injury and he now wants to sell his gear. He has a sabre 170, pd 176R (i think) and a cypres. Also has a Wings container but I'm sure it would be to big for you. I think he wanted $2500 for the wholething. Everything but the main was bought new and he only had 86 jumps when he quit. Main has 400-500 jumps. Also why are you limiting yourself to mirage and javelin there are many other containers just as good as either of those.
  21. I would say just cover your cost. That way it is free advertising and you are giving them a good deal.
  22. I also ask every passenger since my first shower. Even with no turns (just whats needed to get to the LZ) I have been thrown up several more times. I have had 2 of the in the last 10 jumps.
  23. Yea, the Wally movies are funny as hell. I haven't seen one in about ten years though. They are all pretty old, I doubt they are still being sold.
  24. I must have been cloned at some point. I get "you look exactly like someone I know" all the time. Or maybe I was lied to by my parents and I am a quintuplet or something and we were all split up at birth.
  25. Sorry I read the message and didn't see the title. You should take up a flash light to check you canopy. You should get a breifing on all the procedures before you jump.
