  1. I remember about 10 years ago, a guy going through AFF had 2 mals in his first 4 jumps. I think he took up bowling
  2. I would guess that most reserve rides are sub terminal. I know 6 of my 7 have been
  3. Anything over 15000 msl and you are required to use oxygen before the jump. Itis done quite often but is just too expensive and to much of a hassle to do this for every jump. Plus the jump planes climb slower at higher altitudes so it takes longer and burns more fuel. So 13,500 seem to be a coomon altitude. Some DZ's at higher elevations go to 12,500 and most cessna DZ's only go to 10,500 or 11,500 due to slow climb rates.
  4. What Ivan said is corrrect. I meant that you don't have the skill to do that(as the original post said) than you don't have the skill to be in the air with a tandem. IMO
  5. ?????This makes no sense. Planes have so many more out than we do. We only have one chance to land, they can power up and do it again. I understand if the airport doesn't want skydivers landing there, but if that is my only out then I will surely land there. It's better for someone to be mad at you than for you to be injured landing in an unsafe area.
  6. The method you were taught is what most schools will teach. It ensures that the handles are pulled in the correct order. Also there is a better possiblity of you firing your reserve into a main that hasent been completely cleared, with the 1 hand on each method.
  7. If you can't do a half loop to your back, then you have no buisness in the air with a tandem IMO.
  8. It's just that when everyone finds out where you are staying, they all go elsewhere[
  9. Hey if he is bored with the sport, someone want to lend him their sub 100sq ft canopy. It seems that is what the rest of the other bored people in the sport have been doing. It adds alot of adrenaline (right up until the impact.)Havefun...Yahoooooo.....Thump
  10. Yes I looked at the picture, but I am trying to figure out how the passenger harness slipping would cause the rig to float above his back like that. The rig would have to adjusted wrong (or slipped) for that rig to be like that, it shouldn't have anything to do with the passenger harness.
  11. You can expect that the flare will not be near as good as the Sabre 2.( Even worse if it has more than about 300 jumps on it.) Do not expect to plane out during the flare as you would with the Sabre 2. The flare on the PD 190 will be one stroke instead of a two stage flare that you may have learned on the Sabre 2. Also the toggle pressure will be a little higher and the turns not as responsive on the PD 190. Talk with one of your insturctors and open high to play with the canopy and get a feel for the flare.
  12. What kind of aircraft do you fly there. I will be in Battle Creek for a week this summer and will probably come by for a few jumps. Any jumps during the week or is it just a weekend DZ. Thanks Jeff
  13. Don't agree with you that video can't pay for your skydiving. It paid for mine for about 5 years and that was at small DZ. Of course it depends on what type of video you are doing, how much you put into it and other factors. But surely shooting video can pay for your skydivng.
  14. Should we make you quit skydiving? You can kill yourself doing that you know! If done properly, by seasoned pilots, the risk can be managed. Accepting the risks of doing hook turns or swooping is no different than you deciding that skydiving is worth risking your life for. Hook turns are some time only allowed in certain areas to help manage the risk involved, by having less congestion in the LZ.
  15. I also started jumping in 93. It's amazing to me how much the sport has evolved since then. I wonder what the next 12 years will bring? Jeff
  16. On alot of PCs the color will not show in the window even if they are cocked. Usually the color is just below the window. This problem is pretty common but you need to find out if it is cocked. Take the PC out of pocket and hold it above your head and drop it. It will inflate if cocked. You can also look in the mesh part of the PC and there should be about 12" or so of line that comes out of the bridal and goes to the top of the PC. These are things you can check but you really should just ask an instructor or rigger to look before you jump it,it will just take them a second and they should happy to do it for you.
  17. UPS will charge you extra if you require a signiture. FedEx will require one on all packages unless you request otherwise.
  18. Situtation was as follows: My group 3 way freefly followed by a solo sit out of an otter. Our group broke at 4.5K and I threw out at about 3k checked traffic and started to stow my slider when I heard a noise I didn't like. I looked up to see a blob just miss the nose of my canopy and continue past my face to hit my foot. I then see a pilot chute no more than 10 feet below me after she passed by. I was told later by the jumper that she rolled from sit at 4.5k to see she was right over the middle of our group as we were opening. She then decided to try to track to the outside of our group and then dump. Didn't work out. What was the best thing to do in this scenario? Dump at high! Sometimes it is better to do the opposite and get out high than to try to hum it low. But if I feel I am to close to someone in my group to dump next to them I have and will take it lower that I normally do.
  19. If you are doing your own taxes it is pretty simple to do in turbo tax. You just don't need to create a company, you are just doing work as an independent contractor. You can write off any gear you have purchased during the year. Also can write off any other related expenses ie. film, tapes, rigging work ect.
  20. After reading a bit it seems I was misinformed, but would also seem that the transition would be after Cat D. Cat E as I read it does not require a harness hold or any contact with the student with the student exit or otherwise. I could be wrong again but that is what I got from it. Seems there still maybe a grey area? This is the reason I posted this though. When I first read it when it came out, I and other were confused. Everyone had a different understanding of it. Then I was told second hand what one of the directors had said about it. After reading another post this subject came to mind and I thought I would see what people thought a couple of years later.
  21. After reading another post, I was wondering if anyone is using non AFF JM's for IAF jumps in a tandem progression program. According to USPA a tandem instructor can be the JM on all the jumps, except the students first non tandem. I was just wondering if this was being utilized at any DZ's and what your opinion of this was. Not something that we do, I'm just wondering.
  22. Cindy is the DZO of Skydive Tallahassee. www.skydivetallahassee.com and is psychoswooper here on dropzone.com
  23. NP-FM30 is what is on mine. That is the original battery that came with the camera, not an upgraded one
  24. Have fun with it. I have done a 23 mile cross county from 14k with some howling uppers. I think it was around 70 knots at 12k. Of course that was back in the day before I knew any better. (It's not that fun landing in the downtown area town with 32 jumps and 20+mph ground winds)
