Kevin was on my first RW jump. John Campbell and Kevin did a 3 way with me out of the Elsinore Cessna and it was the first time I ever saw anyone else in freefall. I have a photo that I must scan now. Kevin was fairly quiet in speech but very loud in his actions. I remember him chasing a tire around the field at Elsinore that was attached to a flying aircraft for a commercial stunt. Took a while but he finally caught it and hooked himself to it and off he went being flown over the DZ hanging from that cable and tire. What a guy! Kevin will be truly missed by all who knew him. Got the word last night from Jan Meyer and it saddens me a great deal. Kevin was on my first RW jump off student status back in the static line and T10 days. John Campbell was also on the dive with us and took the photo so Kevin and I are seen clearly in the photo on the 3 way. I'll have to get that photo scanned now. It's a shame to get this kind of news on the same day that we memorialized Don Henderson. Kevin was a great skydiver and pilot. He will be truly missed. Larry... Witnessing fatalities and training seem to have had an affect on our policies over the years. At least in all aspects of the sport except swooping and carving turns in the pattern. I remember watching what happened to the way jump pilots take off after the Otter crash at Perris. You never ever saw high speed pull out type rotations after that one. It only took one crash to fix that problem. You see if the pilot had rotated on the numbers, and feathered the proper engine, more people might have survived the incident. But like I said, it only took one crash to change the way pilots at Perris are trained. Why is it taking all these years and fatalities to change this problem? In the last 10 years the Elsinore wuffo population has grown tremendously and let's be real here. They are not the most intelligent looking population to come together on the planet. I don't see the difference between a child hitting a tree at 60mph while skiing and hitting the ground at 100 while skydiving. EIther way the child is just as dead so if you think your kid can handle it I believe it is up to you the parent and not some guiding light agency. Besides all this, the reserve worked... That's what the bottle is for. Had nothing to do with the main. When a person is using a packer and has a mal, does this person run to the packer and demand a free reserve repack? Of course not. It just so happens tin this case, that the same rigger packed the main as packed the reserve. My rigger doesn't pack mains. He'll inspect them and install them. But I have to pack it. I say you have to jump both. Both drop zones are great and the service at both is unbeatable. You will enjoy yourself at both places and you should not pick between the two. Back in I think the 80s???? At Elsinore there was a little person who worked for Jim Wallace Skydiving School and also jumped. She had a special little rig made and I remember she had a license plate on her car that said SMURFET or something to that nature. I don't remember her name but I do rememeber that she was nice looking and not all that disproportional as far as body parts are concerned. I believe she was considered a dwarf instead of a midget.
