  1. Don't count on that one. If you are used to getting out at 12five and then visit another DZ and get out of a Cessna at 10five, well.... Always keep the dirt in view... Take a look every once in a while. If you don't know your altitude, go for the reserve... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 2. Just trying to be politically correct.. LOL! What ever ya do, be safe and live to do it again bro... Do it nekid, do it fast, do it slow, do it on your head but live to do it again...
  3. There will be a simultaneous world wide memorial skydive for Joe Morgan on April 10th. 4. A Mister Bill dive with two beers from 12.5.... Do it with your favorite skydiver of the opposite sex. That is unless you have other standards... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  5. Then the plane would be going sideways as fast as it's going forward. The same problems would be in affect... When high winds occur as upper winds, I think it is best to just give a hell of a lot more time between groups. The plane may have to go around again but so what? At least everyone lives. Let's face it, the DZO has to take some of the chance too... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  6. It's not the size of the canopy that counts... It's what you do with it... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  7. I woudn't attach a winning lotto ticket to my PC.... That thing is important... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  8. I've done it... (Sorry to say)... I left it alone. I looked at the windsock and determined that there was very little wind. I had plenty of room to just let it go straight ahead and do a good PLF down wind. Mostly because every time I tried to steer from either canopy, it tried to go into a downplane. I had no idea which one would steer and ended up letting the brakes off on both canopies. Best thing is to not get into the situation in the first place. But I flared the main downwind and everything came out fine. Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  9. Just had to jump in here... (no pun) I'm a firm believer that canopies do not kill skydivers,,, Hook turns too low to the ground, poor judgement and lack of knowledge are the things that get skydivers killed under a good canopy. Being a hang glider pilot I know something that most skydivers do not. The air at ground level can do some very wierd things and you can not see it. I've hit burbles in my hang glider at 5 feet AGL on landing approach that would collapse any canopy. I have video of people experiencing canopy distortion on final and if that person had been doing 40 mph and just coming out of a hook turn he would have eatin dirt for sure. I don't care how many hook turns you've done or how good you are at swooping, if you keep doing it you will eventually hit that burble in the air just above the ground and your calculations will be off by a foot or two at 40 to 50 mph. If it's off that much and low, you're going to eat dirt and at that speed you will either go to the hospital or the morgue. It's that simple folks... The thing is, no matter how safe they make this sport, there will always be those who wish to push the limits and there will always be those who die doing it. I mean with AADs, RSLs and square reserves, a sack of potatoes could do this now and make it safely to the ground. But to some, freefall is not the end of the thrill. Once the canopy is open they want more of a rush. Hense swooping and hook turns. Just an old and not so bold slydivers opinion... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? 10. One thing no one has mentioned yet... You could have a malfunction... How are you going to find your main in the dark? Especially if it lands in a tree... It's a good idea to clip one of those little red blinking bike lights on to one of your main risers high up enough so the blinking light does not interfere with your night vision. That way if you chop it you'll have a better chance of finding it... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 11. Gotta have a DC3 in here... Photo by Lyle Cameron Jr. That's my butt you're looking at... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  12. I have no idea but I got charged for it. That's all I know... I had never jumped with an AAD before that and I think they charged me about $45 for it..... Was a long time ago... BTW... Would having two canopies out be considered a mal? I never did figure out how to enter that in my logbook. Reserve ride? Mal? Obviously no cut away... 15. Dom, Does he guarantee to pay for the reserve packjob? If so it gives me an idea. LOL! Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  16. Which brings me to the dumbest thing I'll admit to in print... After a 4 year layoff I decided to get current again and headed over to the school to sign up. They wouldn't let me use my own gear though and made me rent from them. Thier gear had an old FXC on it and I had never jumped with an aad. So I asked a few questions about it and off I went with an instructor to do a currency jump. The freefall went fine. She waved me off at 5k so I turned and tracked, and tracked, and tracked... After all we were pretty high still... Out comes the main at 2500 and as soon as I'm in the saddle the reserve leaves my container. DOH! I landed the double canopy. Downwind, because it was too scarry to turn... Had a great PLF and...... had to pay for the reserve repack and the FXC charge... Also had to redo the currency jump. Around $400 for those two jumps I believe... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  17. There used to be a pretty famous (or infamous) "Licensed Rigger" / packer at Perris named "Dead Ted". He guarenteed double your money back if you bounce. Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  18. IMHO I would think that as with all things you can rent, there ought to be an option for insurance and a liability waiver. In this case it sounds as though the person renting the gear signed a piece of paper that rendered him liable for the cost of replacement. However I wouldn't pay for new gear. I would offer them a settlement to compensate them for used gear that is valued as such. Otherwise sue me. A court of law is not goin to award the DZO the price of new gear. 19. Here's a whole bunch of fast loading exit shots. These were taken at Perris during the 2000 nationals from the now defunct live internet Wing Cam that was aboard Gypsy Rose. http://www.airtrash.com/hotshots2.html And listed below are my first and fifth jump out of the DC3 at Elsinore in 1981. (5th jump is first) The last one is what we call a Trashy Gorrila Exit... Green Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there."
