  1. http://www.hanzismatter.com/ A great source to check on the meaning of Chinese characters (and also to have a good laugh). "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  2. A slap to the face of anyone who goes to church. Good point. Much like a girl going to school is a slap in the face of anyone who goes to a radical Muslim Madrasah. "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  3. Won't happen, as the the US won't let it happen. Neither will the US encourage Japan to do so, as the minute Japan would start getting serious about it, China would have every bit of weaponry pointing East. The Chinese trust the Japanese military about as much as the French trusted the Germans after WWI. The 1930's and 1940's have left a very bitter taste which few outside of China can understand... As far as the DPRK is concerned, I believe this is pure political leverage. The more it threatens to bite, the more it can get out of negotiations with other countries... Much like China's relationship with the DPRK is motivated by geopolitical leverage (they have NO political affinities whatsoever, not even close). And by the desire, much like South Korea, not to see millions of piss poor refugees flood across the border if/when the current regime collapses... 4. Ok - so you want a 3 way with his multiple personalities? that would be a 4 way minimum... How many of them are female? I'm a lesbian trapped into a man's body! "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  5. I have 2 passports. My US one after 4 years has one supplement filled, getting another one from the consulate next week. My daughter has 3 passports (from 3 different countries) "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  6. I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that as of a few years ago (when I still lived there), in the State of California, an independent contractor had to carry worker's comp. (which was a way for the State to try and clamp down on the "anyone can be an independent contractor" notion). In addition, I believe the State of California also had an anti dead-beat parents law, requiring any payments made TO an independent contractor had to be reported within 30 days (can't remember if the $600 threshold applied or not). 7. Still happens (although not in the "colonies"). I believe resident aliens do not have the right to vote at the federal level (but do pay taxes). Looks good on paper, but eventually you will be faced with the issue that you will need to define the criteria you mentioned. Who will do this? The "government"? 8. Minnesota "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  9. Linkedin hasn't done anything to me. Yet. But I have used Facebook to tap into my client's pool (advertising agencies), as everybody knows everybody in my line of work. Looking at one major creative director's friends' list gives me contact info for another 30 creative directors... 10. Bullshit! There are at least 53 "Happy Birthday Livendive" threads in this forum. Happy 54th, Dave. Wishing you many more to come (this year).
  11. John, put the gun down and walk away from her picture... "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  12. The Chicago Cubs? "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  13. That's weird. First, I believe the current applicable US Nationality Act is dated 1952. Second, I do not believe this act provides for a US Citizen to lose his/her citizenship upon becoming an expatriate (there are tens of thousands of US expats worldwide), unless one renounces his/her US citizenship to acquire a foreign citizenship not compatible with the US one. My daughter has never set a foot in the US, yet is a US citizen. And although I have not lived in the US for 3 years, I have retained my citizenship. I believe whatever the USNA of 1940 states is now outdated and that the 1952 version supersedes it. 14. While the current Administration let him go, I really don't think the next one will. It will be interesting to see how long it takes when the guy in charge has no connection to Bin Laden's friends and supporters in the Saudi royalty. Considering that OBL is not in best terms with his family members close to the Bush family, I doubt it had much to do with it. However, I could very well see the following happening under the new administration: - a deal is reached between the Taliban, the Karzai administration and the myriad of local warlords, for a share of the power - the coalition forces "stumble" upon OBL's hideout - OBL on a plane to the US, and shortly thereafter the coalition forces announce a speedy pull out from Afghanistan "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  15. I read an interesting article yesterday (I think on CNN.com), about how the perception of a president varies with time. It mentioned how Truman was considered as one of the worst president ever in 1952, yet is now seen in a different light. Reagan's reputation is probably better than it was in 1988, when he was gaffe prone and seen as being controlled by his entourage. Bush's legacy may vary depending on what happens in the next 10 to 15 years in Iraq and the Middle East. He also was faced, as the article mentioned, with events unlikely to hit most presidents (9/11, Katrina, the financial crash). My take is that he made some poor decisions, but some of the events which happen on his watch can not be fully blamed on him. But one of his administration's greatest downfall, in my opinion, was its lack of analysis of situations prior to action, and its inability to "package" some of its action. 16. Don't know about the Spaniards, but we are working on our own headcount alright "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  17. If any of you are registered expats living overseas, who did request an absentee ballot before your state's deadline but have not received it yet, the US Federal government has an online site set up through the Overseas Vote Foundation to issue the ballot, fill it in and print it. It applies only to Federal elections (President & VIP/Senators/Reps). In addition, there is a Fedex service called Express your vote, which will have Fedex pick up your absentee ballot and get it to the proper location for the vote to be counted. Most US States have agreed to this program (I believe only Alabama has not). But the ballot needs to be picked up no later than October 30th, 2008. It is free from some countries (such as China
  18. Still waiting for my absentee ballot, and started to get nervous as to whether I will get it in time or not... "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  19. In France, Liberal = pro market economy, less government intervention, etc... Opposed to the Liberals are the Socialists and Communists. "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  20. Which part of Michelle Obama's (nee Robinson) thesis? What about it causes you discomfort? VR/Marg Probably the first 12 words of the 6th sentence of the 4th paragraph. If you pronounce it backward, it sounds like "wear your underwear on the outside" (or something to that effect). Smoking gun! "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  21. He was being mavericky and all... "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  22. The statement is meaningless when out of context. How much of a disparity is there between haves and have nots (see China), how is the wealth concentrated into few hands (see Iraq under Saddam or North Korea today), and how the "redistribution" occurs (see Mugabe) have huge bearings on how much I would agree with the statement. As a general rule, the more the wealth is spread around, the more stable a country is. Just based on the statement you quoted, I would think a much closer look at the specifics and definitions of "spreading the wealth" and of whom falls into which category would be in order, don't you think? "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
  23. The typical liberal down play. Comparing associations between an unapologetic domestic terrorist with a law abiding good ole boy. Nice play. I think a person's associations and choices in who they surround themselves with are immensely important. In most situations I would agree with you on the guilt-by-association being over done. However, it's not an isolated occurrence with Obama. You can only ignore his choice of associations for so long. Then you compare it to Palin's future son-in-law is a hunter. Does McCain appearing on Liddy's radio show means he supports burglars? Nonsense. Not agreeing with a candidate's platform is understandable and should lead to open, healthy debates. Digging for news into living rooms and back yards is low and childish. "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
