  1. The buying power is based on cost of living, not wages. Inflation has taken away the buying power not low wages.
  2. Sure would suck if the wind speed dropped. 0 ground speed = 0 momentum
  3. Europe imploding will have a much bigger impact on the market than an AA+ rating for the U.S. It is a race now but I think Italy will go bankrupt before Greece.
  4. When my kid leaves the house I ask him what time he is going to be back. I approve that time or recommend something a little earlier (i.e. sane). I hold him to that time, to the minute. Time is by my clock not his. If he is late he loses privileges. So, I'm strict when it comes to being late but give them the freedom to be responsible.
  5. Boot cut with a little heel showing from aforementioned boot :)
  6. Most of the sky divers are jumping out of Orange, MA now (Jumptown). I still drive past 7B2 wishing there was still a DZ there.
  7. Credit rating is everything when getting a loan, if boy & girl both have stellar credit then they have the same buying power in terms of a mortgage. The $$ the boy has for a down payment is his and should be returned to him over time by the girl. boy & girl get mortgage, boy & girl get name on deed boy pays down payment girl pays boy 1/2 of down payment over X months. boy & girl split the mortgage payment. If the boy has stellar credit and the girl has poor credit then the boy gets house, mortgage, deed, loan payment and new girl friend. If the girl can't afford 1/2 the mortgage then she shouldn't be buying a house she can't afford. Establish a ratio of the mortgage paid by each person (70% boy, 30% girl) when the house is sold use the same ratio to distribute and equity gained. Boy pays 70% of everything for the house, girl pays 30%. Get it all in writing before signing for the mortgage and make sure everyone is clear on the financial obligations.
  8. Get him a bunch of porn, he won't be able to work the unit for a couple weeks and it'll drive him insane.
  9. A good friend of mine failed the NCLEX (nurses exam) 5 times in a row. She passed it on her 6th time. Hang in there, you'll get it.
  10. Cilantro is a must have for any salsa. Problem is it will wilt quickly so cut it up fresh. A couple splashes of Worcestorshire sauce gives it a nice depth Dice up some pears, the sweetness drops the heat down. Everyone thinks it is weird to have pears in salsa but trust me, it works. Capsaicin is oil soluable so adding some oil helps bring out the flavor (and ups the heat). A small amount of peanut butter goes a long way.

  13. I have a tractor like that and there is a disengage pin on the back axle. Just pull it out and it frees up the back wheels to you can push/tow it. Some mowers have the release pin on one of the wheel hubs. Mine (John Deere) is on the rear differential.

  17. Can you put that in English, please? Depending on how the person calling you is connected to the telephone network it is pretty trivial to overwrite the caller-id Basically, if you use an ISDN PRI line you can set your caller-id to anything. It is illegal, and your phone provider is supposed to block you from doing it but it rarely happens. if the person calling you is using VoIP it is also insanely easy to change your caller-id. Again, it is illegal to send a call through the Public Switched Telephon Network (PSTN) with bogus caller-id info.
  18. You bitch about OS X but you run Vista? HAHAHAHAHAH the way you were ranting on I placed you for a Linux bigot but Vista? for real? BWAHAHAHAHA No.. seriously? you aren't kidding?

  20. I have 50 or so Linux servers in my network (www.skydivingmovies.com is one). Doing all sorts of things. Most are Fedora, some are Redhat ES. I've been running linux since the 0.99pl4 days (Slackware 0.9 or something) back in 1994 and Redhat since 3.0.3 days. Redhat is pretty good, and it is what I know, I haven't look at the others recently.
  21. Save yourself a LOT of trouble and get syslog-ng which will dump to a MySQL database. Or, get logwatch which is a script that will to the syslog (or any log) parsing that you need. Just launch logwatch from cron every so often. no need to re-invent the wheel, it has been done before http://www2.logwatch.org:81/ http://www.balabit.com/products/syslog-ng/
  22. Food in your belly. A Roof over your head. Cloths on your back. In that order, everything else is secondary
  23. Best of luck to you, It is snowing hard out here now, I'm 100 miles west of Boston and it is ugly out. Weather is predicting a 30-35 MPH headwind the entire marathon route. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, HAVE FUN!!! Can you run 26.2 miles in snow boots?
  24. Actually, It is correctly called a DSL Modem (or cable Modem). DSL is NOT digital, it is analog, just like cable service. The DSL modem MODulates and DEModulates the signal onto the upper frequencies of the copper pair. A DSL modem is almost exactly like a dialup modem except it has a much larger frequency spectrum to work with so it can send/receive more data. A Dialup modem gets it's spectrum chopped off at 4Khz because of the phone switch 8Khz sampling rate. Both DSL & Cable are analog services, your digital signal from your computer is modulated onto an analog frequency and sent over the wire. The only true digital communications service running over phone lines is a DS-1 (twisted pair) or DS-3 (co-ax). Although almost all DS-1 service is actually HDSL over the wire on the street and is only turned back into its digital form in your building by a 'smart jack' which is really a HDSL modem. Sorry, I'm a phone geek.
