  1. Agreed. On all points. absolutely ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  2. You agree with me and Ron - proficiency without booties is pretty much aligned with control on all axis (which I said) which aligns well with the A license timeframe - that signoff defines the ability to do safe 2ways. Pete said neither for "newly licensed jumpers" that's behind the curve. "proficiency" is a subjective term - I'm defining it explicitly - safe control on all axis both linearly, and rotationally how do you define proficiency? I pretty much tie the mantis to the booties - it's a single training cycle in my mind - not two separate things - and you step through the skills sets similar to learning boxman. ... 3. I was serious, though "bad" habits is tongue in cheek on my part if I said that (I said "old" habits) - if the jumper is wanting to learn mantis and bootie use - best to do it early so they don't have to unlearn the "older training". I'd rather teach mantis to a jumper with 30 jumps any day over a jumper with 2000 jumps with their boxman habits so ingrained in their heads that they have to first unlearn all their habits. no, "boxman" isn't a bad habit - it's just the "old" habit that's outdated for people that want to be a bit better than just "fun" jumpers Booties - it's pretty clear when a newbie isn't ready to safely add booties - as soon as it's safe is still a judgment call, but it's not too far into their training - for some/most, it's pretty much right around that A license point when they've demonstrated control on all axis. Others? well,......they'll get there eventually too For booties, I do a basic body position review, send them up solo, explain line of track and encourage that first so they get excited about it. We talk about knee turns, etc and the extra power they'll experience. We then talk up/down, fwd/back, turns and slides with the body position. I volunteer once in a while some monkeysee/monkeydo jumps where they mimic me in the basics. Yearly, I organize a tunnel camp with one on one mantis training - fortunately, we don't allow GoPros in the tunnel during the camp . Looks like March again. I hope we do this right. I think raising good RW folk is a big bonus to a DZ. Using Booties early on helps the jumpers stay excited too. ... 4. I disagree, you shouldn't add foreign equipment until they have been able to confidently do it on their own. Under your logic you might as well throw a camera on their head to so a reasonable response followed by an asshole comment - thanks so much IMO - "confidently do it on their own" = "able to translate and turn on all axis" - we aren't in conflict except for your little dig. ... 5. I have about 2000 jumps on the current Stiletto (ST120 at 1.6 WL) and maybe about 10 openings with more than a half line twist and those calmly unwound - about the same as my Sabre before that, and the Maverick before that. and no canopy related mals on this one my next Stiletto is currently on order ... 7. I really wasn't trying to make a political statement or lament the loss of JFK and "Camelot". (I am really not a fan of the Kennedys). Just trying to express the assassination of a President through the eyes of a 13 y.o. kid, who up until that time, grew up in an era when (most) American children were, for the most part, shielded from the "evils" of the outside world by parents who lived through the Great American Depression and WW2. I forgot the whole "camelot" phrasing. that's great. No problems here, I'm just off on a random rant with no real agenda - for the children ... 9. I was going to +1 Dave's post, but your last paragraph is a great one. The Stiletto is a great fun flying canopy. You can swoop with it for fun and do great, but it's not going to win world class comps - it's not designed for that. But it's a lot more fun to just fly up high than canopies designed for swooping as well. Its an all around great canopy - high performance "flying and landing" doesn't equal - high performance "swooping". Example - I tried the Katana and was immediately bored with it. However, while demo'ing the thing, I could clearly recognize that if I was only interested in swooping, that Katana would be much more effective than my Stiletto of the same size. But up in the air, I didn't like the turns, the glide angle, and the altitude loss. That's an easy tradeoff. Had I been more interested in swooping than just general performance, I'd surely switch - I'm not. I'm ignoring all the incorrent snotty slams on the design (spin ups, etc) - canopy snobs tend to do that on the wings they don't fly. ... 11. I live in 2010 - I have no desire to fantasize about a member of a filthy rich corrupt family and the hopes of a certain population segment to romantacize a short lived leader and wish for a time in the past and the concept of American royalty in what should be a free nation. We have problems today to deal with and our own batch of corrupt leaders to deal with every two years. We don't need an aristocracy and we really don't need pointless rear view mirror sobbing. ... 12. Exactly We are talking what the problem is but, I know that is hard for you to understand You might want to clarify your point. 1 - All spending is currently over the top and it all needs to be curtailed. 2 - When people ONLY focus on the military budget they are missing that point. Military needs huge cuts, obviously, but focusing on only that one point is a clear miss of what's really needed. They are pushing a social agenda, not really being genuine about overall spending. I believe that's your point - being obtusely ignored just for argument sake...... ... 17. and did he put his money where his mouth is and send in a lot more last year? How much and was it "no strings attached"? just sent to the treasury as extra. seems the hypocrit is 'wasting' all that government money (currently in his accounts) by donating to causes of his choosing rather than just sending to the treasury where it can be spent much smarter by politicians. or does he just want "people like himself" to pay more, but not really including himself as a 'more equal' pig on the farm........? ... 20. fascinating generalization especially when it's phrased "jury of my peers" (acknowledging a jury is composed of people) vs "Tribunal" (some faceless blob that just does stuff - it may be formed of people, or perhaps just robots...hard to tell) explore the bias more..."Representation by counsel" is automatic with the jury bias - but tribunals apparently don't follow any process at all, the blob just passes down a decree, maybe from a random number generator i love how people portray their stereotypes in what is, seemingly to them, pretty simple/harmless opinions Sorry, aphid, everyone here does it, your's was just really ripe for dissection (in other words, it was the bottom post to reply to). 21. No they are an instruction, they are a physical reminder made from the instructor to the student at the time when they are doing the said activity. I am not out to argue, . I hate semantics games, it's a worse signal than Godwin. Reminding someone to breath (via a signal, or fresh minty experience) is also instruction. You can call it whatever you like. But it's not a direct and physical intervention. Have you ever had a student not respond to a hand signal (in air instruction)? If so, I guess hand signals are pointless too and you should stop those also. We even have a "relax" hand signal - how parallel to you think the applicability needs to be before it's acknowledged? My point, whatever works, is what works. You work to find that technique and not be stuck in the SOP if the SOP is NOT working. ... 24. I'd consider the strip specifically to be a 'focus' item, not a placebo. It physically makes the throat cool as one inhales and gives the student something to sense and remind them every breath. However, to your question - using a placebo in the psychology of teaching - I all for it if it works and creates a safe mindset and improved habits. And it doesn't much matter what the placebo is, a good instructor will take an unusually difficult student and try the figure out what works if the standardized process isn't effective - signals, thinking points, relaxation techniques, physically moving the arms and legs, funny faces, arousal setting, whatever is needed. If you think about it, I'd consider a "hand signal" to fall into the category of a 'placebo' frankly. While physically moving a leg or arm is direct, a hand signal doesn't actually move a student, they still have to be aware, recognize the input, and then THEY respond. ...
