  1. Or put another way, "Thank you for your service" rings pretty hollow to someone who's getting kicked out, not for what he/she does, but for what he/she is. I think Skyrider's concern is more about "over correction" and we'd see self righteous gay servicemen and women being obnoxious and over the top about it instead of just saying "ok then" and then get to work. I think that's a real concern in a public arena, but in the military, dropping DADT will likely be implemented with little fuss and they'll just move on like adults. Military seems to integrate more smoothly and naturally than any other area whenever politics or oddball bias finally gets out of the way - maybe because people really do understand that they rely on each other and can focus on character and competence and leave the cosmetic stuff aside. ... 2. absolutely. To stay the premier superpower, will require winning the war as the economic superpower, not winning tactical military demonstrations. The wars in Afghan and Iraq should stop, what good could be accomplished is done, more presence is diminished returns, the locals need to take care of themselves now. The global terror battle is better handled covertly, now miltarily. That is also more economical. The war now is exactly an economic one - the one we have been dramatically losing the last 11 years with the last 2-1/2 years the losing has accelerated ridiculously so. Edit: of course, cutting military spending is STILL only one of the BIG THREE catagories of government spending that needs dramatic cuts ... 9. the more I think about human psychology, and taxes - the more I like this concept over everything other option. But it would have to come with a requirement that government has to operate within the bounds of the money collected the previous year. No borrowing or changing the rules as you go. Government would have to encourage people becoming affluent enough to increase consumption as a general rule in order to have income to spend (ie. buy votes). But - if they could balance a budget like that int he first place, we wouldn't have to resort to smart taxing concepts. ... 10. I absolutely love this concept as a concept. Everybody pays something, the rate is flat, but because of the up front exemption, the true tax rate is still a progressive rate in practice. But the problem still comes in the numbers because what will happen is that "cut off" number will be set to exempt half the population from paying any tax at all. So - anyone making less than 100K pays nothing. everyone dollar over that pays 90%. As soon as everyone decides it's easier to just make $99,999.99, then the limit is lowered or wealth is then taxed to cover the budget again. (Just throwing out extreme examples to make the point here - ) So it's just like what we have now, only cheaper to implement because the tax code is much simpler. And that code is where the pols REALLY buy your votes - so they'd fight this concept tooth and nail. An improvement, but just in terms of it being more transparent. ... 11. it's still a BS position - you make more, you get to buy more - why is that so objectionable? Would you be happy if all product prices were scaled to income? "Yes, I'd like to buy a gallon of milk" "of course, let's see your W-2 and bank statements - that'll be $3547.00 please" and then the next guy buys the same product for 37 cents... nice of course - it would create a few jobs - everyone would hire extremely poor people to just go and buy stuff for them ... 14. Key words in bold Choosing to give your money to charity is exactly the opposite of taxes. Buffet is a hypocrit. He wasted all that money by giving money he says should go to government and instead spent it the way he thinks he should. Seems that if the government took all the money away from buffet and gates and any other charitable minded "rich" people, that a LOT of charities will get royally screwed. ... 16. and how does the government propose to take the really fit people and make them fat? and how much will it cost us? given your phrasing, it doesn't seem you are asking a serious question. Or you simply mistyped. Elaborate? my fault - the smiley for cynicism wasn't enabled. But, those fit people are just lucky, most just inherited those genes, they really do owe it to the rest of us to get a bit fatter. It might not help, but it's a LOT easier and it FEELS good to pass laws that would validate that position even if we don't enforce them. And isn't that what legislation is all about?
