I wrote the original "Black". 50 Shades of Grey is merely a derivative work. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  5. We needed to be afraid when Obama signed the 2012 NDAA into law. Complete circumvention of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th amendments. Too late to change it, everyone was more concerned about keeping their jobs, and now we're stuck with an end to personal freedom from government tyranny. All in the name of fear of terrorism. 6. And when elected President of the US, I will enact a simple, 1-point gun-control plan. 1) Require that all guns have bayonettes on the BACK of them, pointed at the wielder. Then, natural selection will weed out most of these people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fWHFMQ8Wlk "Dude, my mom's gonna kill me" Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  9. Man, this thread is going downhill fast! Of course, that's why I came here. Faster! Faster! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  11. There is also added risk for the increased speeds. Right now, Voyager 1 is traveling at about 8 miles per second, and has been for 35 years. You could create a spacecraft that began with conventional thrust, like Voyager, use gravity assist around a planet to really build up momentum, and then add Ion-drive engines to continually accelerate it to incredible speeds, potentially small fractions of light speed. The chances of it hitting something big, like an asteroid, in space is extremely small. There's a lot of space in space. But what about a single particle of space dust? Right now, we know that our own satellites are susceptible to micro-meteorite damage, which you are going to encounter when you're so close to a large body like Earth. That's much less likely in interstellar space, but one will probably find dust even beyond the Oort cloud. A single piece of space dust, when struck at astounding speed, may penetrate the hull of a spacecraft and potentially disable it. We really don't know what happens to micro particles when impacted at extraordinarily large speeds. Will it expand, disintegrate, tumble or what? Over the course of decades, it is likely that a fast-moving craft will encounter at least a few particles of dust, and if they are traveling at these speeds, a collision even with a tiny particle may end the mission entirely. 12. Give us a chance! We're still trying to figure out how to get into space! Tomorrow, we're launching a pan of lasagna Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  13. Are we talking highway or city miles? And it doesn't hurt to get the oil checked every once in a while Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. Oh c'mon, really? You'd need a solar sail and a month to capture the recoil from that. I guess I should have said "really, really small recoil." Kinda like how they don't float backward in a straight line, but in a low-amplitude wave with a really long period. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  15. There was a time when Russian made meant well-built! What happened to sturdy Russian planes? Now, they just fall apart after a little skid on landing. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  16. Haven't seen it, but I'm guessing it's an energy-based weapon (Sci-Fi)? In which case, there is no recoil? Maybe you're hoping that future generations will know better than to fire at the hull of the life-sustaining space ship that they are in? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  17. I inherited my mom's DVD of this movie, and watched it again, not having seen it since I was a kid. I was surprised to see Benny Hill in it! And it was written by Ian Fleming, and directed by Roald Dahl! Anyway - favorite onomatopoeia - PISS. Feels good saying it while you do it! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  18. Medicine? That's so early 21st century. In Colorado, it's now approved for recreational use. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  19. Considering how much people pay for bottled water, this may be the way to get the space exploration program moving forward. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  21. I love the rhetoric some scientists use to try to get their point across. I read one that said something like if it covered an area the size of Washington, D.C., it would be two miles thick! Well, I've been to D.C., and it ain't that geographically large. Adding up all the ice on an entire planet and giving it, relatively, a pinhead of spatial reference is kinda silly. But I do think it's neat that a planet that close to the sun has ANY ice. I just think it needs to be taken in the correct context. With some available water there, we could certainly find uses for it with robotic explorations. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
